Dogs ease Namibia's cheetah, farmer conflicts

Bred by cheetah conservationists to stop farmers from killing the big cats, Anatolian shepherd dogs are transforming farming techniques in Namibia by reducing conflicts between carnivores and humans. Winding through the parched Namibian farmland, Bonzo, an Anatolian shepherd dog, has a singular focus: protecting his herd of goats from lurking predators. He pads along, sniffing the air and marking the scrubby landscape, just like a bodyguard ready to ward off any threat to his charges, which he considers family. "They're not pets. They're not allowed to be pets," said Bonzo's owner farmer Retha Joubert. The breed descends from ancient livestock dogs used thousands of years ago in what is now central Turkey. And they not only save sheep and goats, but have handed a lifeline to Namibia's decimated cheetah numbers by reducing conflicts between farmers and predators. "The dogs are protecting the flock in such a way that the farmers don't have to kill predators," said Laurie Marker of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) which breeds the dogs near northern city Otjiwarongo. "It's a non-lethal predator control method so it is green, it's happy, it's win-win." The concept is simple. The dogs are placed with a flock when a few weeks old to bond with the livestock. They live permanently with the animals, loyally heading out with them every day to deter hunters, and bedding down with them at night. Marker's centre started breeding the livestock dogs to promote cheetah-friendly farming after some 10,000 big cats—the current total worldwide population—were killed or moved off farms in the 1980s. Up to 1,000 cheetahs were being killed a year, mostly by farmers who saw them as livestock killers. But the use of dogs has slashed losses for sheep and goat farmers and led to less retaliation against the vulnerable cheetah. "We see about 80 to 100 percent decrease of livestock loss from any predator when the farmers have the dogs," said Marker. In the last 19 years, around 450 dogs have been placed with farmers and more than 3,000 farmers trained. There is now a two-year waiting list for the dogs—either stately Anatolian shepherds or Kangals—and the programme has expanded to other countries with predators.

" Commissioner Bience Philomina Gawanas (Born in Namibia) is Commissioner of Social Affairs on the African Commission. In this role, she oversees advocacy as well as the harmonization and coordination of regional and continental policies and programmes relating to social development. As the Commissioner of Social Affairs, Commissioner Gawanas developed policy instruments, projects and programmes on social development, including the Social Policy Framework, the Maputo Plan of Action on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and the Declaration on Universal Access and an African Common Position presented at the UN High Level Meeting on Universal Access. Commissioner Gawanas initiated pioneering activities such as the renewed Campaign on Malaria Eradication, the AU Campaign Initiatives on Human Trafficking (AU.Commit) and the Campaign on the African Cultural Renaissance. Additionally, she launched the AU’s Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) continentally and in 25 AU member States in collaboration with governments and partners, which has refocused attention on women and their health. She was a Commissioner on the Public Service Commission in Namibia from 1991 to 1996, and an Ombudswoman in the Namibian Government from 1996 to 2003. Namibia court upholds sterilisation verdict

Namibia's Supreme Court has upheld a ruling that health workers sterilised HIV-positive women without their consent. The original 2012 judgment had found that health workers had coerced three HIV-positive mothers to sign sterilisation consent forms they did not fully understand, while in labour. The Southern Africa Litigation Centre said the ruling sends a message to the government to stop the practice in the southwestern African nation, and elsewhere on the continent. Priti Patel, deputy director and HIV programme manager for the centre, told Al Jazeera the case was far from isolated. "What we think should happen now is that the government of Namibia needs to step up and start investigating the claims of these other women," she said. "The government needs to take active steps to make sure this stops happening. "This decision has far-reaching consequences not only for HIV-positive women in Namibia but for the dozens of HIV-positive women throughout Africa who have been forcibly sterilised," Patel said. Other cases have been documented in South Africa and Kenya, she said. Sterilisation is a drastic tactic to treat HIV-positive women, as mother-to-child transmission of HIV and AIDS can be prevented with medication. Namibia's high court will assess how much money the three women should be awarded, according to the centre. Further allegations The women had all sought care at government hospitals in Namibia while in labour, with one woman signing a form that used only acronyms to describe the procedure, while another signed after being told she did not have a choice, the centre said. Since the case was first filed in 2009, dozens more women have spoken of cases of similar experiences at public hospitals to the Namibian Women's Health Network (NWHA). The NWHA first began documenting allegations of forced sterilisation of HIV-positive women in 2007. "These three women are only the tip of the iceberg," the network's director Jennifer Gatsi-Mallet said in a statement. "The government needs to take active steps to ensure all women subjected to this unlawful practice get redress." About 250,000 Namibians, more than 10 percent of the population, are living with HIV according to UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS.

The Angolan Civil War was a major civil conflict in the Southern African state of Angola, beginning in 1975 and continuing, with some interludes, until 2002. The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975. Prior to this, a decolonization conflict had taken place in 1974--75, following the Angolan War of Independence. The Civil War was primarily a struggle for power between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). At the same time, it served as a surrogate battleground for the Cold War, due to heavy intervention by major opposing powers such as the Soviet Union and the United States. Each organisation had different roots in the Angolan social fabric and mutually incompatible leaderships, despite their sharing the aim of ending colonial occupation. Although both the MPLA and UNITA had socialist leanings, for the purpose of mobilizing international support they posed as "Marxist-Leninist" and "anti-communist", respectively. A third movement, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), having fought the MPLA alongside UNITA during the war for independence and the decolonization conflict, played almost no role in the Civil War. Additionally, the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), an association of separatist militant groups, fought for the independence of the province of Cabinda from Angola. The 27-year war can be divided roughly into three periods of major fighting -- between 1975 and 1991, 1992 and 1994, and 1998 and 2002 -- broken up by fragile periods of peace. By the time the MPLA finally achieved victory in 2002, an estimated 500,000 people had been killed and over one million internally displaced. The war devastated Angola's infrastructure, and dealt severe damage to the nation's public administration, economic enterprises, and religious institutions. The Angolan Civil War reached such dimensions due to the combination of Angola's violent internal dynamics and massive foreign intervention. Both the Soviet Union and the United States considered the conflict critical to the global balance of power and to the outcome of the Cold War, and they and their allies put significant effort into making it a proxy war between their two power blocs. The Angolan Civil War ultimately became one of the bloodiest, longest, and most prominent armed conflicts of the Cold War. The Lebanese foreign minister, Jubran Bassil says his country welcomes any assistance to its military. Iran’s announcement came during the visit to Beirut by the country’s top security chief Ali Shamkhani. This provoked an immediate reaction from the US that Iran’s planned assistance is against UN resolutions. But Iran’s deputy foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has now rejected Washington’s criticism. Amir Abdollahian says Tehran’s help for the Lebanese army will be in line with efforts to fight terrorism and also in accordance with the international law. He says Tehran believes the Lebanese army needs a boost to increase its abilities against terrorists.

Uranium mining companies have been exploring the arid country of Namibia looking to open new mines. Rössing, a Rio Tinto mine has already been operational for more than 30 years. The implications this mine and future operations is explored from the perspective of the communities living nearby. Through this documentary and two reports (http://www.criirad.org/mines-uranium/namibie/uranium-mining-namibia.html), the EJOLT (www.ejolt.org) team working on nuclear energy sheds light on the dangers of uranium mining in Namibia. Two NGOs in Namibia (Earthlife Namibia and LaRRI), a French independent laboratory specialised in radiation (CRIIRAD) and team coordinator Marta Conde (UAB) partnered to produce this remarkable set of action oriented resources. After a public event on the 10th April 2014 in London -- together with other activists from Madagascar, Papua New Guinea and the US who are also impacted by the activities of Rio Tinto -- an article appeared in The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/apr/15/uranium-workers-dying-cancer-rio-tinto-namibia-mine). This event was organised prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Rio Tinto that took place on the 15th April 2014. In the AGM, Roger Moody from PARTIZANS presented the results of the study carried out by Earthlife and LaRRI on the impact of uranium mining on workers. The EJOLT project (2011-15) has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 266642. In Swakopumund there are architectural treasures that were rented out in the days of the Kaiser and are reminiscent of various houses in Berlin. This is a part of Germany that no longer exists in Germany itself. Moon Valley is bizarre and extra-terrestrial and for millions of years it has withstood the erosive power of the Swakop. With its deep-cut valleys and no vegetation in sight, the endless rocky landscape seems unfriendly, life threatening and impassable. Namutoni Camp is situated in the centre of the Etosha National Park and has a history that dates back to 1851. Thirsty antelopes and zebras rendezvous at a watering hole while a herd of elephants drink at another. Namibia is, quite rightly, a much sought after tourist destination. White deserts, wild animals, mountains strewn with ravines, and white beaches - Africa’s south west is full of more than a few colourful surprises!

Formerly a colony of Germany, Namibia was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate after WWI, and annexed as a province of South Africa after WWII. The South-West African People's Organization (SWAPO) launched a guerrilla war for independence in 1966, but did not gain independence until 1990. Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib desert, the Fish River Canyon Park, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds. See IN Namibia ================ Namibia is a land of much natural beauty. To truly appreciate the country, you need to get out in the countryside, either on a tour or by renting a car, and take in the deserts, the mountains, the villages and all that that Namibia has to offer. One of its most dominant features, and the one for which the country is named, is the Namib Desert that stretches for nearly a 1000 km along the Atlantic coast. As one of the oldest deserts in the world, its sand takes on a distinctive rust colour and it has some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Sossusvlei is the most accessible part of the desert and is a magical place with its towering dunes that shift hues as the sun rises and sets. Further south, near the South African border, is Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world. Stretching for 160 km, it is reaches 27 km across at its widest and nearly 550 m down at its deepest. In the north of the country is the empty and mostly inaccessible Skeleton Coast National Park. It's a seemingly barren expanse of stone and sand famous for its fog and the number of shipwrecks along the coast. Perhaps not as plentiful as neighbouring Botswana or South Africa, Namibia still has plenty of African wildlife to see. This includes some local subspecies, such as desert lions, desert elephants and the Hartmann's Mountain Zebra, which are adapted to the harsh desert climate. Grazing animals like gemsbok, ostrich and springbok are also common. Namibia's national parks are an excellent place to start and one of the most famous is Etosha National Park in Northern Namibia. The park surrounds the Etosha salt pan, which attracts animals, particularly in the drier winter months, because it is a source of water in a very dry land. Other notable spots to view wildlife are Waterberg Plateau Park, the parks of the Caprivi and the remote Kaokoland. Namibia has a German influence from colonial times that is still reflected in some of its buildings. Windhoek has a number of interesting buildings like the Christuskirche, the train station and the castle-like Heinitzburg Hotel. Lüderitz is a colonial-era town with distinctive German Imperial and Art Nouveau styles. Nearby is the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop. Once a thriving center for diamonds, the miners moved on and the sand dunes have moved in, but tours are still available.

The town has 85,000 inhabitants and owns 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi) of land. The bay has been a haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life, these waters also drew large numbers of Southern right whales, attracting whalers and fishing vessels. The Dutch referred to it as Walvisch Baye and the English as Whale Bay. In its eventual proclamation, it came to be called Walfish Bay, then Walvish Bay, and ultimately Walvis Bay. It has also been referred to as Walwich Bay or Walwisch Bay. A succession of colonists developed the location and resources of this strategic harbour settlement. The harbour's value in relation to the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope had caught the attention of world powers since it was discovered. This explains the complicated political status of Walvis Bay down the years. The town is situated just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Kuiseb River delta and lies at the end of the TransNamib Railway to Windhoek, and on the B2 road. Walvis Bay, with its large bay and sand dunes, is the tourism activity centre of Namibia. Other attractions include the artificial Bird Island, centre of a guano collection industry, the Dune 7 sand dune, salt works, birdlife and a museum. Kuisebmund Stadium, home to two clubs in the Namibia Premier League, is also located in the city and the beach resort of Langstrand lies just a few kilometres north. The Walvis Bay Export Processing Zone is an important facet of the local economy. Walvis Bay (Walvisbaai) lies some 30 kilometres south of Swakopmund, accessed (if you happen to approach from the north) on a stunning ocean road seamed by mighty dunes. The town is situated at a wide lagoon with innumerable sea birds, pelicans and flamingos. On a clear day one can see the black-and-white lighthouse at the tip of the premontary at the northwest of the lagoon. Walvis Bay had already been discovered by Diaz as early as 1487, but was founded only in 1793 by the Cape Dutch and two years later annexed by the British. In 1910, Walvis Bay became - like the entire Cape Colony - part of the South African Union. After Namibia's independence, the only deep sea port on the Namibian coast remained under South African rule and only in 1994, the former South African president F.W. de Klerk gave it back to Namibia. The lagoon is the scenic feature of Walvis Bay. It is one of the most important wetlands of southern Africa and is the hibernation area for thousands of migratory birds. Worth a visit in Walvis Bay is the local museum in the Civic Centre, the Birdlife Information Centre and the wooden Rhenish Mission Church from the year 1880. "Dune 7" near town is the highest sand dune of the area. Who climbs it, can enjoy a wonderful view. A unique experience is the adventurous 48 km drive to Sandwich Harbour, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by dunes, and a favourite amongst anglers and ornithologists. A four-wheel drive is a necessity. The track is not in all parts easy to recognise. Some stretches go through soft sand, and the last bit one has to walk. You have to inquire about the tides. At high tide there is no way as the dunes just slope down steeply into the water.
