Marine mammals, which include seals, whales, dolphins, and walruses, form a diverse group of 128 species that rely on the ocean for their existence. They do not represent a distinct biological grouping, but rather are unified by their reliance on the marine environment for feeding. The level of dependence on the marine environment for existence varies considerably with species. For example, dolphins and whales are completely dependent on the marine environment for all stages of their life, whereas seals feed in the ocean, but breed on land. Marine mammals can be subdivided into four recognised groups; cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), pinnipeds (seals, sea lions and walruses), sirenians (manatees and dugongs), and fissipeds, which are the group of carnivores with separate digits (the polar bear, and two species of otter). Both cetaceans and sirenians are fully aquatic and therefore are obligate ocean dwellers. Pinnipeds are semi-aquatic; they spend the majority of their time in the water, but need to return to land for important activities such as mating, breeding and molting. In contrast, both otters and the polar bear are much less adapted to ocean living. While the number of marine mammals is small compared to those found on land, their total biomass is large. They play important roles in maintaining marine ecosystems, especially through regulation of prey populations. These two factors make them an integral component of the marine environment. This is of particular concern considering 23% of marine mammal species are currently threatened.

The Science of Picky Eaters - 02:00
What makes a dish taste good to some people and terrible to others? Why do many people, particularly many kids, find broccoli and spinach unbearably bitter? Neil deGrasse Tyson, whose mother says he was always a good eater, sets out to investigate the science behind our sense of taste. It turns out that genetics largely determine our taste, and specific genes may provide new excuses for picky eaters.

Is it easier to manage marine mammals than fisheries? Tails of successes
Abstract
Uncertainty in fisheries management is pervasive. It has often been stated that “counting fish is like counting trees, except trees don’t move and you can see them”. Managers of fisheries and commercial and aboriginal whaling both aim to achieve a balance between conservation and utilization. Perhaps surprisingly, there is strong evidence that even when there is harvesting, aspects of the biology and monitoring of baleen whales makes

Inaugural Professorial Lecture: “Dolphins and steel: marine mammal ecology in industrialised seas”
Our coastal seas host an impressive diversity and abundance of marine mammals. Many of these species have been known about for hundreds of years but only in recent decades have we developed the tools to really understand their daily lives and the threats that they face. Concurrent has been an increasing use of the seas and oceans for industrial activities from food and energy provision to transport and war.
In this talk, Ben Wilson outlines his own studies of Scottish porpoises, Pacific sea lions and bottlenose dolphin populations from the Moray Firth to Florida and Croatia. All of these populations have been impacted by human activities to greater, lesser or unknown extents. His current work focusses on how technologies to extract renewable energy from the seas (wind, waves and tides) will interact with indigenous wildlife. These studies have posed many questions about how and why marine mammals and fish use energetic ocean habitats and in particular how they will respond to the diversity of the novel marine machines being proposed. Of specific conservation concern is whether or not marine mammals will collide with the blades of tidal turbines. Scotland is currently the world hub for marine energy extraction and so many of these fascinating interactions will take place off our own shores. Accordingly, Ben and the wider University of the Highlands and Islands marine energy research team has a ring-side seat on these issues and is playing a leading role in developing industry relevant solutions.

Biomedical engineer Sangeeta Bhatia comes from a line of enterprising women—her mother was one of the first women in India to receive an M.B.A. With her own Ph.D. and M.D., Bhatia is a tissue engineer at MIT. She builds unique microlivers to study disease and test drugs, and her work may someday lead to artificial organs for transplant.
While a student at MIT, Bhatia started an outreach program to get girls into labs—wearing spacesuits, working with lasers, and loving science. Now, as a mother, Bhatia is encouraging her two young daughters to see science as a creative, exciting endeavor.
Capturing Carbon - 36:41
How did an eighth-grader's science fair project inspire a new way to tackle rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Claire Lackner's father Klaus, a geophysicist at Columbia University, had a brainstorm after he saw how Claire used an aquarium pump to capture carbon dioxide in the air. A decade later, Dr. Lackner is testing a product inspired by his daughter's vision.

Smart Marine Mammals - 14:47
Scientists studying the behavior and intelligence of seals, sea lions, and other captive marine mammals at the University of California's Long Marine Lab say that these animals are challenging long-held assumptions about what makes humans different from other animals. Correspondent Ziya Tong discovers just what the researchers mean after she meets some of their gregarious pinniped students.

Perhaps surprisingly, there is strong evidence that even when there is harvesting, aspects of the biology and monitoring of baleen whales makes it possible to achieve management goals fairly often. These aspects include the ability to estimate absolute abundance with reasonable precision for many stocks of baleen whales, the availability of data to inform estimates of likely population growth rates, and the implementation of precautionary harvest control rules which have been tested using simulations. I will review the status of baleen whale and the fish stocks worldwide and identify what fisheries can learn from marine mammal management.
Bio
André E. Punt is a Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University Washington, Seattle, USA and the currently the Director of the School. He received his B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Before joining the University of Washington, Dr Punt was a Principal Research Scientist with the CSIRO Division of Marine and Atmospheric Research in Australia. Dr. Punt has been involved in stock assessment and fisheries management for over 25 years and has been recognized for his contributions in this area with awards from CSIRO, the University of Washington, the Australian Society for Fish Biology, and the American Fisheries Society. The research undertaken by Dr. Punt and the MPAM (Marine Population and Management) group at the University of Washington relates broadly to the development and application of fisheries stock assessment techniques, bioeconomic modelling, and the evaluation of the performance of stock assessment methods and harvest control rules using the Management Strategy Evaluation approach. Dr. Punt has published over 250 papers in the peer-reviewed literature, along with over 400 technical reports. Dr Punt is currently a member of the Scientific and Statistical Committee of the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the Crab Plan Team of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, and the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission.

4,500 marine animals are living happily ever after, thanks to the efforts of Ford owner Bob Schoelkopf, founder of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.
His nonprofit organization is dedicated to rescuing stranded marine animals along the east coast and giving them a second chance at life.
Since the MMSC’s inception in 1978, Bob and his wife, Sheila, along with a small group of volunteers, have successfully rescued and rehabilitated hundreds of seals, whales, dolphins and sea turtles. Learn more at http://mmsc.org/

Dolphins and steel: marine mammal ecology in industrialised seas
Professor Ben Wilson, professor of energy, University of the Highlands and Islands
Tuesday 10 February 2015, Inverness College UHI

Profile: Sangeeta Bhatia - 25:22

Call of the Killer Whale
The most complex marine species on the planet, our counterparts in the sea are the orca, the ruler of the ocean. They are the most widely distributed marine mammal in the world, and their realm extends from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Orcas, also called killer whales, number fewer than 100,000 worldwide, and learning more about them is a global endeavor for Jean-Michel Cousteau and his team of explorers, who travel to both the northern and southern hemispheres as they seek out killer whales in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The Whale Entanglement Team
The Whale Entanglement Team
WET is a group of 30+ unpaid professionals (volunteers) assembled and trained for the purpose of disentangling whales. The authority of this group is under the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program permit #932-1905 on which Pieter Folkens of the Alaska Whale Foundation is a co-investigator. Most of WET’s core members have direct affiliations with other conservation organizations that unofficially support this activity in a variety of ways.
We primarily respond to entangled whales from San Luis Obispo to the Oregon border, but are available to assist in other locations as needed.
WET was convened by Peggy Stap, Executive Director of Marine Life Studies and Mary Whitney, Executive Director of Fluke Foundation. Accomplishments of Marine Life Studies include: the initial team assembly, 877-SOS-WHALE phone number, printed response cards, printed marine mammal guides, a complete tool cache for Monterey Bay, additional tools for San Francisco, a response boat, and a trailer that can carry all equipment.
