Central America has an area of 524,000 square kilometers (202,000 sq mi), or almost 0.1% of the Earth's surface. As of 2009, its population was estimated at 41,739,000. It has a density of 77 people per square kilometer or 206 people per square mile.
In pre-Columbian times, the north-western areas of modern Central America were part of the Mesoamerican civilization. The Native American societies of Mesoamerica occupied the land ranging from central Mexico in the north to Costa Rica in the south. Most notable among these were the Maya, who had built numerous cities throughout the region, and the Aztecs, who created a vast empire. The pre-Columbian cultures of Panama traded with both Mesoamerica and South America, and can be considered transitional between those two cultural areas.

It was suppose to be two plus ones, however my mom didn't make it because of school. So my step father and I happily flew into the beautiful countries of Belize and Guatemala, Two completely different yet diverse lands with amazing people. Although Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America, it is a mixing pot of English, Spanish, Mayan, and coastal Garifuna cultures. Belize is a good mashup of tourist and backpacker all in one.
After flying into Belize Citys airport out the outskirts of the city, we took a cab to the Belize City Water Taxi terminal. From here we took about an hour boat ride to Caye Caulker en route to our island, Ambergris Caye where San Pedro is. San Pedro so far was the most relaxing and most laid back place I have ever been to. WHen they say take it slow, they mean it as time nearly seized to exist and our time there seemed to last longer than we thought, GOOD. We spend half of our second day strolling the beaches, walking around town where all they primarily drive is golf carts, and finally went snorkeling in Shark Alley with sharks, turtles, and fish.
Third day we left the relaxation of the island behind, headed for Belize City and took our first 3 hour chicken bus across Belize for San Ignacio. Although uncomfortable, the bus ride costed us a whopping $4. Once we finally arrived in San Ignacio, we settled in our cozy hotel and took a cab ride over to the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, 15 to 20 minutes from the Guatemala border and the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, outside the city. Considering the distance, we walked from Cahal Pech through the small town of San Ignacio to catch dinner and finally head back to our hotel. Instead of our fourth day cave diving or tubing, we cancelled those plans and headed straight for the Guatemalan border to spend the next five days there before heading back home.
Belize is an amazing country for it's size. It not only offers great tourism but offers foreigners the opportunity to buy land for retirement. As for backpackers, Belize is the most if not one of the more expensive countries in Central America. However, the experience between relaxing on a Belizean beach or hiking up a Mayan pyramid is something that you truly can never forget. For a small English speaking nation in Central America, Belize is Unbelizable. Can you Belize it? :)
Many years ago, I sat in a college classroom glancing at pictures of travel, two years ago I started, last year I left the country for the first time, this trip, I backpacked for the first time. Like all my videos, they represent me as I put my heart into all of my footage. I not only enjoy my time and explore but I hope to give others the opportunity to see how things are done beyond the travel guides and books. This is travel in the eyes of Anthony Perez! Hope you enjoy and happy travels!

At best, this search for the continuing legacies of past civilizations can help explain how different cultures have developed over time, show how the past greatly influences all our lives, and cultivate a respect for other cultures. At worst, it can send a message that these civilizations have remained virtually unchanged through time, unlike the West, and cultivate a false view of other peoples as less "modern." The negative impact of the assumption that other cultures are not as modern as the West surfaces when Westerners make judgements, bu

Cave Tubing in Belize, Central America
Cave Tubing in Belize, Central America
This is a video of Cave Tubing in Belize (Central America). It is a peaceful, slow, relaxing tour that takes you on about a 20-25 minute tour (walk) through the jungle in Belize to a calm river where you ride on a tube for a 45 minute to 1 hour float down the river which passes through a cave. There are multiple routes available. The Mayan's called caves hell so you will see and hear motto's of being to hell and back. There is a danger of Puma's and other feline species and also snakes on the walk in, however, these animals are generally nocturnal and pose little real threat. This trip is VERY popular in Belize and usually there are many peop

Neil Gibson's journey begins in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, where he gets caught up in election fever and visits a volunteer group who are trying to combat the problem of poverty that still exists on the outskirts of San Jose.
From San Jose, Neil hooks up with a Harley tour, and cruises up to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Its a haven for wildlife boasting the largest number of different bird species in the world. Here Neil has close encounters with rare birds, tarantulas, & deadly snakes, before arriving at Volcan Arenal where he relaxes in the mystical atmosphere of the hot volcanic springs.
Heading west to Liberia, Neil plays at being a cowboy and goes to a bull fiesta, where his Scottish charm lands him with the honor of dancing with the Rodeo Queen. From Liberia, Neil heads south to rest up on the Pacific Coast in Montezuma, a popular travelers hangout.
The next leg of the journey takes Neil over the border by boat into Nicaragua. His first stop is at the historic town of El Castillo, where he finds a guide and heads off to explore the surrounding jungle. Neil has to hunt for his dinner and ends up eating roasted rat around the campfire.
North of El Castillo is Lake Nicaragua. Neil travels across this Lake to the Solentiname archipelago, and stops off at the Island of Mancarron, where he learns about the roles that people played during the revolution in Nicaragua. On Sunday afternoon, Neil plays baseball and as part of the winning team he celebrates with rum which is brewed locally and fermented in human excrement. Whilst on the island, Neil also investigates the local art scene and learns how the Islands turbulent history has influenced the art produced.
Traveling across from the Soletiname Archipelago, Neil reaches Granada where he visits a cigar factory and learns to roll his own. From here he hitches to Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Neil explores this city which was devastated by an earthquake in 1972, and discovers that getting about is not easy, because many streets do not have names, and people use buildings that are no longer standing as reference points. Neil finds a guide and takes to the road with a biker who shows him the sights and sounds of Managuas night life.
On a more serious note, Neil also visits the Heroes & Martyrs Museum, and Peace Park, which brings home the realities of decades of fighting, in a war where over 30, 000 died.
Neil hitches a lift to Diramba, where the annual religious festival was taking place. After joining in with the colorful festivities, he journeys to the serene landscape of Volcan Masaya. Its a four hour trek to the craters edge, known by the Indians as the land of the Gods, and known by the Spanish as the mouth of Hell. It is here in this dramatic landscape that Neil ends his adventure through Central America.

The contras (some references use the capitalized form, "Contras") is a label given to the various rebel groups opposing Nicaragua's FSLN (Sandinista National Liberation Front) Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction government following the July 1979 overthrow of Anastasio Somoza Debayle's dictatorship. Among the separate contra groups, the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN) emerged as by far the largest. In 1987, virtually all contra organizations were united, at least nominally, into the Nicaraguan Resistance.
From an early stage, the rebels received decisive financial and military support from the United States government, initially supplemented by the Argentine dictatorship of the time. After U.S. support was banned by Congress, the Reagan administration tried to covertly continue contra aid.
The term "contra" comes from the Spanish contra, which means against but in this case is short for la contrarrevolucion, in English "the counter-revolution". Some rebels disliked being called contras, feeling that it defined their cause only in negative terms, or implied a desire to restore the old order. Rebel fighters usually referred to themselves as comandos ("commandos"); peasant sympathizers also called the rebels los primos ("the cousins"). From the mid-1980s, as the Reagan administration and the rebels sought to portray the movement as the "democratic resistance," members started describing themselves as la resistencia.
During the war against the Sandinista government, the contras carried out many violations of human rights, and evidence suggests that these were systematically commited as an element of warfare strategy. Contra supporters in Miami and the White House often tried to downplay these violations, or countered that the Sandinista government carried out much more. In particular, the Reagan administration engaged in a campaign to alter public opinion on the contras which has been denoted as "white propaganda".
During the time congress blocked funding for the contras, the Reagan government engaged in a campaign to alter public opinion and change the vote in congress on contra aid. For this purpose, the NSC established an interagency working group which in turn coordinated the the Office of Public Diplomacy for Latin America and the Caribbean (S/LPD), which conducted the campaign.
The S/LPD produced and widely disseminated a variety of pro-contra publications, arranged speeches and press conferences. It also disseminated "white propaganda" -- pro-contra newspaper articles by paid consultants who did not disclose their connection to the Reagan administration.
On top of that, Oliver North helped Carl Channell's tax-exempt organization, the "National Endowment for the Preservation of Liberty", to raise $10 million, by arranging numerous briefings for groups of potential contributors at the premises of the White House and by facilitating private visits and photo sessions with president Reagan for major contributors. Channell, in turn, used part of that money to run a series of television advertisements directed at home districts of congressmen considered to be swing votes on contra aid. Out of the $10 million raised, more than $1 million was spent on pro-contra publicity.
"If you look at it as a whole," a senior S/LPD official said, "the Office of Public Diplomacy was carrying out a huge psychological operation of the kind the military conducts to influence a population in denied or enemy territory."

Legacy - The Origins of Civilization - Episode 5: Central America, the Burden of Time (Documentary)
At best, this search for the continuing legacies of past civilizations can help explain how different cultures have developed over time, show how the past greatly influences all our lives, and cultivate a respect for other cultures. At worst, it can send a message that these civilizations have remained virtually unchanged through time, unlike the West, and cultivate a false view of other peoples as less "modern." The negative impact of the assumption that other cultures are not as modern as the West surfaces when Westerners make judgements, business deals, and policy decisions based on this assumption. Although Legacy aspires to the former objective, it often ends up fulfilling the latter. For example, the following statements by writer and presenter Michael Wood exemplify how the language Westerners often use to talk about non-Western peoples relegates them to a space and time outside of a Western view of the universe: "Two conceptions of civilization have fought for the soul of the peoples of the Americas, one foreign and recent, that of the West, the other ancient and native;" "For over 2000 years, China has been sustained by ideas virtually unchanged since the Bronze Age." Throughout the series, comments like the ones above and the relative absence of images of people creating and using modern technology make it difficult for viewers to see the integral roles non-Western peoples occupy in the present.
EPISODE 5: Central America, the Burden of Time
This episode explores how indigenous peoples of Central America have "hung on with great tenacity" and resisted spiritual conquest by retaining old languages and practices despite their physical conquest by the Spanish and consumer society over the past 500 years. Wood describes them as "stubbornly collective" and "stoical," but "possessed of an inner strength that would allow them to bear any burden, even one as heavy as the last 500 years." Wood laments and condemns the conquest of the Americas, but his emphasis on Central America's continuity with its pre-Columbian past also seems to serve to alleviate Western guilt.
Wood's survey of the legacy of Mesoamerican civilizations discusses the Popul Vuh, the Mayan creation myth, explores the Mayan ruins at Teotihuacan, Tikal and Copan and the Aztec temple of Quetzalcoatl in Mexico City, and observes present-day shamans in order to demonstrate the continuity between the Mesoamerican past and present, the Mayans all-consuming obsession with time, and the war-like character of the Aztecs. Although he mentions other aspects of Aztec civilization, he spends most of the time discussing their often-sensationalized practices of human sacrifice.

This trip is VERY popular in Belize and usually there are many people on the trail. There is no danger in the river (only small fish live in the river and small bats in the cave). They do require you to wear a helmet with flashlight, a life vest and tube, all provided, while tubing the river. Being able to swim and some type of shoe is required. Sandals count if they are secure (no flip flops). The river changes depths from "butts up" (shallow enough the guide may have to drag you) to 20 or so feet deep. You must go with a guide and groups are usually 8 tubers per guide. It can be quite crowded in the cave at times. Children must be 8 or over. I recommend this experience to anyone visiting Belize (it is the most popular activity).

The Future of US Defense Cooperation in Latin America
Please join the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security for a Commanders Series event with General John F. Kelly, Commander of US Southern Command, to discuss the future of US defense cooperation in Latin America.
Latin America is of increasing strategic importance to the United States. In an age of the rebalance to Asia, continued engagement in the Middle East, and the emergence of an aggressive Russia, Latin America has received comparatively little attention from the US national security community. Slowly, this is starting to change, especially with the recent crisis of unaccompanied children migrants fleeing p

In Central America, dynamic economic actors have inserted themselves into global markets. Elites atop these sectors attempt to advance a state-building project that will allow them to expand their activities and access political power, but they differ in their internal cohesion and their dominance with respect to other groups, especially previously constituted elites and popular sectors. Differences in resulting state-building patterns are expressed in the capacity to mobilize revenues from the most dynamic sectors in quantities sufficient to undertake public endeavors, and in a relatively uni

Slowly, this is starting to change, especially with the recent crisis of unaccompanied children migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America. How will these and other developments affect US defense strategy and cooperation in the region, and how will this strategy help the United States best deal with this important region? General Kelly will come to the Atlantic Council to discuss these and other questions.
Since 2012, General Kelly has been the Commander of US Southern Command, which is responsible for all Department of Defense security cooperation in the forty-five nations and territories of Central and South America and the Caribbean Sea, an area of 16 million square miles. Before his current position he served as the Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense from March 2011 to October 2012. Kelly also commanded Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North in Iraq from October 2009 to March 2011.

China's Plan To Cut Central America In Half
Nicaragua has given a Chinese company the go ahead to build a 173-mile-long canal through the heart of their country. This canal would displace more than a hundred thousand people, destroy nearly 1 million acres of land and potentially pollute one of the country's main water sources. Today on Seeker, we learn about the end of one revolution and the possible birth of another.

Globe Trekker - Central America (Costa Rica & Nicaragua) with Neil Gibson

Honduras
Honduras
Honduras , officially the Republic of Honduras, is a republic in Central America. It was at times referred to as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras, which became the modern-day state of Belize. The country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea.

The Future of US Defense Cooperation in Latin America
The Future of US Defense Cooperation in Latin America
Please join the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security for a Commanders Series event with General John F. Kelly, Commander of US Southern Command, to discuss the future of US defense cooperation in Latin America.
Latin America is of increasing strategic importance to the United States. In an age of the rebalance to Asia, continued engagement in the Middle East, and the emergence of an aggressive Russia, Latin America has received comparatively little attention from the US national security community.
