A trade association, also known as an industry trade group, business association or sector association, is an organization founded and funded by businesses that operate in a specific industry. An industry trade association participates in public relations activities such as advertising, education, political donations, lobbying and publishing, but its main focus is collaboration between companies, or standardization. Associations may offer other services, such as producing conferences, networking or charitable events or offering classes or educational materials. Many associations are non-profit organizations governed by bylaws and directed by officers who are also members.
One of the primary purposes of trade groups, particularly in the United States and to a similar but lesser extent elsewhere, is to attempt to influence public policy in a direction favorable to the group's members. This can take the form of contributions to the campaigns of political candidates and parties through Political Action Committees (PACs); contributions to "issue" campaigns not tied to a candidate or party; and lobbyinglegislators to support or oppose particular legislation. In addition, trade groups attempt to influence the activities of regulatory bodies.[citation needed]

The negotiations were quickly overshadowed by massive and controversial street protests outside the hotels and the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, in what became the second phase of the anti-globalization movement in the United States. The scale of the demonstrations—even the lowest estimates put the crowd at over 40,000—dwarfed any previous demonstration in the United States against a world meeting of any of the organizations generally associated with economic globalization (such as the WTO, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), or the World Bank). The events are sometimes referred to as the Battle of Seattle or the Battle in Seattle.
To many in North American anarchist and radical circles, the Seattle WTO riots, protests, and demonstrations were viewed as a success.[24] Prior to the "Battle of Seattle," there was almost no mention of "anti-globalization" in the US media, while the protests were seen as having forced the media to report on why anybody would oppose the WTO.[25]
Similar tactics on the part of both protesters and police were repeated at subsequent meetings of the WTO, IMF/World Bank, Free Trade Area of the Americas, and other international organizations, as well as the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in the US.
Previous mass demonstrations had taken place in Australia in December 1997, in which newly formed grass-roots organizations blockaded Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Darwin city centers.[26]The Seattle protests were by far the largest actions to have taken place in the United States.
Controversy over the city's response to the protests resulted in the resignation of the police chief of Seattle, Norm Stamper,[27] and arguably played a role in Schell's loss to Greg Nickels in the 2001 mayoral primary election.[28][29] The massive size of the protest pushed the city of Seattle $3 million over its estimated budget of $6 million, partly due to city cleanup and police overtime bills. In addition, the damage to commercial businesses from vandalism and lost sales has been estimated at $20 million.[30]
On 16 January 2004, the city of Seattle settled with 157 individuals arrested outside of the no-protest zone during the WTO events, agreeing to pay them a total of $250,000.[31] On 30 January 2007, a federal jury found that the city had violated protesters' Fourth Amendment constitutional rights by arresting them without probable cause or hard evidence.

What changes are taking place in the world trading system since the global financial crisis and what are the implications for Asia? The WTO Doha Development Round is in deadlock and the emergence of the mega-regional Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership are likely to transform world trade governance. Addressing these questions and the current state of play at an ADBI seminar held on 20 March, trade experts including Richard Baldwin, Professor of International Economics at the Graduate Institute Geneva, emphasized the need to start thinking ahead about the shape of regional and global trade governance a

The first major protest in Seattle, Washington against the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its role in promoting economic globalization came as a surprise to many, considering the positive impacts globalization was supposed to bring. According to Stiglitz, this was the first step in a widespread recognition that globalization was all "too good to be true." Along with globalization comes a myriad of concerns and problems, says Stiglitz.
The first concern being that the rules governing globalization favors developed countries, while the developing countries sink even lower.
Second, globalization only regards monetary value of items, rather t

The negotiations were quickly overshadowed by massive and controversial street protests outside the hotels and the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, in what became the second phase of the anti-globalization movement in the United States. The scale of the demonstrations—even the lowest estimates put the crowd at over 40,000—dwarfed any previous demonstration in the United States against a world meeting of any of the organizations generally associated with economic globalization (such as the WTO, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), or the World Bank). The events are sometimes referred to as the Battle of Seattle or the Battle in Seattle.
Planning for the demonstrations began months in advance and included local, national, and international organizations. Among the most notable participants were national and international NGOs such as Global Exchange[2] (especially those concerned with labor issues, the environment, and consumer protection), labor unions (including the AFL-CIO), student groups, religiously-based groups (Jubilee 2000), and anarchists (some of whom formed a black bloc).[3]
The coalition was loose, with some opponent groups focused on opposition to WTO policies (especially those related to free trade), with others motivated by pro-labor, anti-capitalist, or environmental agendas. Many of the NGOs represented at the protests came with credentials to participate in the official meetings, while also planning various educational and press events. The AFL-CIO, with cooperation from its member unions, organized a large permitted rally and march from Seattle Center to downtown.
However, others were more interested in taking direct action including both civil disobedience and acts of vandalism and property destruction to disrupt the meeting. Several groups were loosely organized together under the Direct Action Network (DAN), with a plan to disrupt the meetings by blocking streets and intersections downtown to prevent delegates from reaching the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, where the meeting was to be held. The black bloc was not affiliated with DAN, but was responding to the original call for autonomous resistance actions on November 30 issued by People's Global Action.[4]
Of the different coalitions that aligned in protest were the "teamsters and turtles" - a blue-green alliance consisting of the teamsters (trade unions) and environmentalists.
To many in North American anarchist and radical circles, the Seattle WTO riots, protests, and demonstrations were viewed as a success.[29] Prior to the "Battle of Seattle," there was almost no mention of "anti-globalization" in the US media, while the protests were seen as having forced the media to report on why anybody would oppose the WTO.[30]
Similar tactics on the part of both protesters and police were repeated at subsequent meetings of the WTO, IMF/World Bank, Free Trade Area of the Americas, and other international organizations, as well as the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in the US.
Previous mass demonstrations had taken place in Australia in December 1997, in which newly formed grass-roots organizations blockaded Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Darwin city centers.[31] The Seattle protests were by far the largest actions to have taken place in the United States.
Controversy over the city's response to the protests resulted in the resignation of the police chief of Seattle, Norm Stamper,[32] and arguably played a role in Schell's loss to Greg Nickels in the 2001 mayoral primary election.[33][34] The massive size of the protest added $3 million to the city's estimated meeting budget of $6 million, partly due to city cleanup and police overtime bills. In addition, the damage to commercial businesses from vandalism and lost sales has been estimated at $20 million.[35]
On 16 January 2004, the city of Seattle settled with 157 individuals arrested outside of the no-protest zone during the WTO events, agreeing to pay them a total of $250,000.[36] On 30 January 2007, a federal jury found that the city had violated protesters' Fourth Amendment constitutional rights by arresting them without probable cause or hard evidence.

SEATTLE, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- "TRADE OFF" -- the first feature-length documentary about the World Trade Organization (WTO) protests in Seattle -- will premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) on June 8th 2000. The film highlights five days in Seattle that shook the world -- November 28th through December 3rd, 1999 -- when the World Trade
Organization's first meeting on U.S. soil was met with protests by tens of thousands of people. Transcending the violent media images of "The Battle in Seattle" that captured international headlines, TRADE OFF provides a substantive look at the issues that inspired the demonstrations and unified a broad coalition of activists, launching a new political movement.
With appearances by activists, organizers, policy experts, and politicians, the film features, among many others, satirist Michael Moore, U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, California State Senator Tom Hayden, Jello Biafra, and the music of the Laura Love Band and Spearhead. Shot entirely on location, this balanced overview of the week in Seattle weaves together a compelling visual tapestry of rallies, demonstrations, teach-ins, street action, press conferences, and interviews. The issues explored in "TRADE OFF" are those faced by civil society -- the effects of global trade policy on the environment, food and agriculture, labor and human rights, and the future of democracy around the world. These same issues also provided the inspiration for a unique cross-generational collaboration of emerging filmmaker Shaya Mercer and industry veteran Thomas Lee Wright, each with strong roots in the Seattle area.
"When I heard that 50,000 people were descending upon Seattle to protest the World Trade Organization, I knew it had to be important," said Shaya Mercer, who makes her feature documentary directing debut with "TRADE OFF." "But when I looked further into the WTO, and learned how its policies affect every aspect of our lives -- from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to our working conditions, and our very participation in the democratic process -- I knew I had to get involved, join the protests. And then my phone rang and it was Tom, and he'd had the same sense that this was big, and we agreed that it should be filmed. So instead of picket signs, we picked up cameras and hit the streets."
Mercer, a Seattle native, was raised in the San Juan Islands, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Television Direction with high honors from Western Washington University. After ten years of experience in production, working on commercials, music videos, independent shorts and features, studio films, and the television show "Northern Exposure," Mercer was excited to capture the significance of the events unfolding in her home town.
Mercer's mentor and "TRADE OFF" producer Thomas Lee Wright directed/produced the award-winning Discovery Channel documentary about gang members during the L.A. riots, "Eight-Tray Gangster: The Making of a Crip," which was selected by the Seattle, London, and American Film Institute-Los Angeles International Film Festivals and aired on television world-wide. As a screenwriter, he has worked for every major studio and authored the original screenplay for the Warner Brothers hit "New Jack City." Other projects have dealt with such volatile topics as the Irish Republican Army, Chinese Democracy Movement, and the Ramparts-L.A. police scandal.
TRADE OFF is the inaugural project of Wright Angle Media LLC, a new multi- media entertainment company. Shot and edited on digital beta, "TRADE OFF" will be projected digitally at SIFF on the wide screen of Seattle's newly refurbished Cinerama Theatre on June 8th at 7:15PM, with a special press screening the week before. What is World Trade Organization?
A report all about World Trade Organization for homework/assignment
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an organization that intends to supervise and liberalize international trade. The organization officially commenced on 1 January 1995 under the Marrakech Agreement, replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which commenced in 1948. The organization deals with regulation of trade between participating countries by providing a framework for negotiating and formalizing trade agreements and a dispute resolution process aimed at enforcing participant's adherence to WTO agreements, which are signed by representatives of member governments and ratified by their parliaments. Most of the issues that the WTO focuses on derive from previous trade negotiations, especially from the Uruguay Round .

Addressing these questions and the current state of play at an ADBI seminar held on 20 March, trade experts including Richard Baldwin, Professor of International Economics at the Graduate Institute Geneva, emphasized the need to start thinking ahead about the shape of regional and global trade governance and reforming the World Trade Organization.

Moderator Nina Laboy interviews Jessica Walker Beaumont about the aftermath of the World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle and the protests that occurred...
Second, globalization only regards monetary value of items, rather than other factors involved; one being the environment.
The next concern is how developing countries are controlled by globalization and the negative effects it can have on their democracies. Developing countries borrow a large amount of funds from other countries and the World Bank which essentially causes them to give up the benefits of their democracy because of the strings attached to the loan repayment.
The fourth concern regarding globalization is the notion that it does not live up to its original expectations. Globalization was advertised to boost countries economically; however, it has not shown improvement in developed nor developing countries.
Last but not least, the new system of globalization has basically forced a new economic system on developing countries. This new economic system is seen as the "Americanization" (Stiglitz, Page 9) of their policies as well as culture. This has caused quite a bit of resentment and financial damage.
In addition to these concerns, Stiglitz highlights that individual persons and whole countries are being victimized by globalization.
Globalization had succeeded in unifying people from around the world — against globalization. Factory workers in the United States saw their jobs being threatened by competition from China. Farmers in developing countries saw their jobs being threatened by the highly subsidized corn and other crops from the United States. Workers in Europe saw hard-fought-for job protections being assailed in the name of globalization. AIDS activists saw a new trade agreement raising the prices of drugs to levels that were unaffordable in much of the world. Environmentalists felt that globalization undermined their decade long struggle to establish regulations to preserve our natural heritage. Those who wanted to protect and develop their own cultural heritage saw too the intrusions of globalization.
— Stiglitz, 2006, p. 7
Stiglitz then goes on to provide an overview of how we might "reform" globalization, by noting representatives of the world's national governments attended the Millennium Summit and signed the Millennium Development Goals, pledging to cut poverty in half by 2015. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had previously been focusing more on inflation, rather than employment and income; however, they have shifted their focus in hopes of reducing poverty. Stiglitz states that countries who seek financial assistance have in the past been asked to meet an outrageous number of conditions, in exchange for the aid. This was one of the most common complaints towards the IMF and the World Bank. They have heard these complaints and have since greatly reduced the conditionality. The G8 group met for their annual meeting in 2005 and had agreed to write off debt owed by the 18 poorest countries in the world as an attempt to help with the global poverty issue. As regards the aspiration to make trade fair,
originally, opening the market was done in hopes of helping the economy; however, the rights between the developing and developed countries have been skewed, and
the last trade agreement actually put the poorest countries in a situation in which they were worse off than to begin with.
Stiglitz focuses on the limitations of liberalization briefly to say the results of liberalization never lived up to the expectations; the developing countries were not able to follow through because their economic and political systems simply could not cope with the pressures.
Finally, Stiglitz also argues that protecting the environment is one of the most important issues and countries must work together to lessen the effects of global warming. Successful development in countries such as India and China has only increased energy usage and also the use of natural resources. People from all over the world must adjust their lifestyle in order to reverse the effects of global warming.

originally, opening the market was done in hopes of helping the economy; however, the rights between the developing and developed countries have been skewed, and
the last trade agreement actually put the poorest countries in a situation in which they were worse off than to begin with.

Unlike other textbooks in the field, it takes readers behind the scenes of the world's most important international organizations (IOs), inviting them to ask: What are the legal obligations that give IOs international power? How do IOs ensure compliance from their members? And how do they enforce their rules? International Organizations explores these questions through in-depth, chapter-length case stu

This work posits that, over the past two centuries, democratic norms have spread from domestic politics to intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). Grigorescu explores how norms shaped IGO decision-making rules such as those driving state participation, voting, access to information, and the role of NGOs and transnational parliaments. The study emphasizes the role of "normative pressures" (the interaction between norm strength and the degree to which the status quo strays from norm prescriptions). The case law of the World Trade Organization is extensive, now running into some three hundred decided cases and thousands of pages. The interpretative process involved in this jurisprudence constitutes a form of legislative activity, and is therefore of great significance not only to the parties to disputes, but to the membership of the WTO. Qureshi identifies some of the underlying problems of interpreting WTO agreements, and examines the conditions for the interpretation of these agreements. Since the first edition of this book, the case law has grown, and the interpretation evolved fur

It contains a set of disciplines that affect the ability of governments to impose trade restrictions, and has helped to support the steady expansion of international trade since the 1950s. It is a unique organization in providing a framework for member states to make binding policy commitments that are enforced through a unique dispute settlement system and a variety of transparency mechanisms. This comprehensively revised new edition of the acclaimed work by an outstanding team of WTO law specialists provides a complete overview of the law and practice of the WTO. The authors begin with the institutional law of the WTO (such as the sources of law and remedies of the dispute settlement system), then tackle the principal substantive obligations of the WTO regime (including tarif

Non-communicable diseases, associated with risk factors such as tobacco consumption, poor diet, and alcohol use, represent a growing health burden around the world. The seriousness of non-communicable diseases is reflected in the adoption of international instruments such as the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control; the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health; and the WHO Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol. In line with these instruments, states are beginning to use measures such as taxes, restrictions on marketing, product regulation, and labeling measures for public health purposes. This book examines the extent to which the law of the World Trade Organization restricts domestic implementation of these types of measures. The relationship between international health instruments and the WTO Agreement is examined, as are the WTO covered agreements themselves.

Unlike other textbooks in the field, it takes readers behind the scenes of the world's most important international organizations (IOs), inviting them to ask: What are the legal obligations that give IOs international power? How do IOs ensure compliance from their members? And how do they enforce their rules? International Organizations explores these questions through in-depth, chapter-length case studies of the world's key international organizations, allowing students to connect essential IO theory with the law, practice and philosophy of the leading IOs, including the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund and the European Union. Concise and engagingly written and with end-of-chapter questions, legal appendices and suggestions for further reading, this is core reading for any course on international institutions.

Democratic Intergovernmental Organizations?: Normative Pressures and Decision-Ma — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/nleewe8
This work posits that, over the past two centuries, democratic norms have spread from domestic politics to intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). Grigorescu explores how norms shaped IGO decision-making rules such as those driving state participation, voting, access to information, and the role of NGOs and transnational parliaments. The study emphasizes the role of "normative pressures" (the interaction between norm strength and the degree to which the status quo strays from norm prescriptions). Using primary and secondary sources to assess the plausibility of its arguments across two centuries and two dozen IGOs, the study focuses on developments in League of Nations, International Labor Organization, United Nations, World Bank, European Union, and World Trade Organization.

Interpreting WTO Agreements: Problems and Perspectives — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/pft5vyk
The case law of the World Trade Organization is extensive, now running into some three hundred decided cases and thousands of pages. The interpretative process involved in this jurisprudence constitutes a form of legislative activity, and is therefore of great significance not only to the parties to disputes, but to the membership of the WTO. Qureshi identifies some of the underlying problems of interpreting WTO agreements, and examines the conditions for the interpretation of these agreements. Since the first edition of this book, the case law has grown, and the interpretation evolved further. This second edition addresses these developments and engages in the contemporary discourse on the subject. Also included is a new section on issues of interpretation relating to preferential trade agreements and the WTO. This book is an essential tool for WTO trade specialists, as well as government and judicial officers concerned with interpreting these agreements.

U.S. Taxation of Foreign Income By Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Ariel Assa — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/lrfk2n2
Since 1992, new issues have arisen in international taxation for example, taxation of electronic commerce, novel means of shielding passive income, the World Trade Organization (WTO) debate over the foreign sales corporation and subsequent passage of the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, the problem of corporate inversions, and alleged "earnings stripping"; by foreign-based multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in the United States. In the meantime, US-based MNEs operating abroad have used a variety of methods to cut the effective US tax on repatriated foreign source income to around 2 percent. This revised study analyzes the impact of taxes on industry location and profit shifting using new panel econometric studies. It also discusses and evaluates new paradigms that have been suggested for the international tax system.

FREE TRADE SCAM+TPP will ruin whats left of the USA
Just as with NAFTA and the World Trade Organization or NAFTA and the WTO, The President and the Congress are lying to Americans. These trade agreements ONLY benefit China and are, in my view, part of the structured Bankruptcy as America's creditors begin to demand repayment of the national debt. It is obvious that the US Government is being manipulated once again to sell out the American people. If you don't rise up and fight to stop them, then you can literally kiss the USA goodbye! Ask yourself 2 questions: If it's so good for us, why is it only discussed and viewed in secret under armed guard? And if it's "good" for American workers. why does a major part of the plan include funding the unemployment benefits of the estimated 10 million Americans who will lose their jobs because of the Trans-Pacific_Partnership? Think people... THINK!

World Trade Organization (WTO): Law, Economics, and Politics (Global Institution — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/q2rmcne
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is one of the most important international organizations in existence today. Despite – or because of – its success, the WTO has recently become the focus of vociferous protests by anti-globalization activists. This book separates the facts from the propaganda and provides an accessible overview of the WTO's history, structure and policies as well as a discussion of the future of the organization. It also confronts the criticisms of the WTO and assesses their validity.

The WTO is one of the most important intergovernmental organizations in the world, yet the way in which it functions as an organization and the scope of its authority and power are still poorly understood. This comprehensively revised new edition of the acclaimed work by an outstanding team of WTO law specialists provides a complete overview of the law and practice of the WTO. The authors begin with the institutional law of the WTO (such as the sources of law and remedies of the dispute settlement system), then tackle the principal substantive obligations of the WTO regime (including tariffs, quotas, and MFN). They then move on to consider unfair trade, regional trading arrangements, and developing countries. In its final section the book deals with the consequences of globalization: firstly, where free trade is seen to be incompatible with environmental protection and, secondly, where WTO law confronts legal regimes governing issues of competition and intellectual property.

The World Trade Organization: A Very Short Introduction — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/ojue58q
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is scarcely ten years old, but it has already generated a mountain of debate, controversy, and outrage. Rulings on beef hormones and tuna-dolphin cases provide explicit examples of how the organization regulates into areas of individual consumer choice, ethical preferences, and cultural habits. The deep and far-ranging impact of the WTO on peoples' everyday lives means that it is not just an institution of interest to economists, but to everyone, a fact that was perhaps most graphically illustrated by the demonstrations that have become a regular feature associated with high-level meetings of the WTO. This book provides a carefully considered explanation of what the WTO is, what it does, and how it goes about executing its tasks, and gives a clear understanding of the mandate, structure, and functioning of the WTO that is essential to appreciating the controversy behind the organization.

The 1999 World Trade Organization Protests: Free Trade, Economic Justice (2000)
Protest activity surrounding the WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999, which was to be the launch of a new millennial round of trade negotiations, occurred on November 30, 1999 (nicknamed "N30" on similar lines to J18 and similar mobilizations), when the World Trade Organization (WTO) convened at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington.

For more information on the film or to obtain an advance screening copy, please contact Celia Alario: 310-721-6517 or calario@hotmail.com.

Since its first edition, this textbook has been the first choice of teachers and students alike, due to its clear introduction to the basic principles of the multilateral trading system and its detailed examination of the law of the World Trade Organization. The third edition continues to explore the institutional and substantive law of the WTO. Material has been restructured to closely align with teaching approaches making it even more user-friendly. It has been updated to incorporate all new developments in the WTO's body of case law. Questions and assignments are integrated to allow students to assess their understanding, while chapter summaries reinforce learning. Chapters end with an exercise reflecting real-life trade problems: these challenge students (and practitioners) and enable them to hone their analytical skills. This title is an essential tool for all WTO law students and will also serve as the practitioner's introductory guide to the WTO.

This leading undergraduate textbook now covers international relations theory in more depth and includes new material on NATO and the EU, while its case studies have been updated throughout.

Think people... THINK!
