Nicéphore Niépce (born Joseph Niépce) March 7, 1765 – July 5, 1833) was a French inventor, most noted as one of the inventors of photography and a pioneer in the field. He is most noted for producing the world's first known photograph in 1825. Among Niépce's other inventions was the Pyréolophore, the world's first 'internal combustion engine', which he conceived, created, and developed with his older brother Claude, finally receiving a patent on July 20, 1807 from the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, after successfully powering a boat upstream on the river Saône.
Niépce was born in Chalon-sur-Saône, Saône-et-Loire, where his father was a wealthy lawyer; this caused the whole family to flee the French Revolution. His elder brother Claude (1763–1828) was also his collaborator in research and invention, but died half mad and broke in England, having squandered the family wealth in pursuit of non-opportunities for the Pyréolophore. He also had a sister and a younger brother called Bernard.
Nicéphore was baptised Joseph but adopted the name Nicéphore, in honour of Saint Nicephorus the ninth-century Patriarch of Constantinople, while studying at the Oratorian college in Angers.[citation needed] At the college he learned science and the experimental method, rapidly achieving success and graduating to work as a professor of the college.

His current series, SUNBURN, aims to push and explore the limits of analog photography. The first commercially successful photographic process was announced in 1839, the result of over a decade of experimentation by Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce. Unfortunately, Niépce died before the daguerreotype process was realized, and is best known for his invention of the heliograph, the process by which the “first photograph” was made in 1826. The Daguerreotype - Photographic Processes Series - Chapter 2 of 12

The first commercially successful photographic process was announced in 1839, the result of over a decade of experimentation by Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce. Unfortunately, Niépce died before the daguerreotype process was realized, and is best known for his invention of the heliograph, the process by which the “first photograph” was made in 1826. Daguerreotypes are sharply defined, highly reflective, one-of-a-kind photographs on silver-coated copper plates, usually packaged behind glass and kept in protective cases. The daguerreotype process is demonstrated in this chapter.
This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, grant number MA-10-13-0194.

Fue Joseph-Nicephore Niepce quién consiguió las primeras imágenes negativas en 1816, utilizando papel tratado con cloruro de plata, pero se obstinó en lograr directamente imágenes positivas y además no consiguió fijar la imagen obtenida. Louis Jacques Mandè Daguerre, veinte años más joven que Niepce y famoso pintor, estaba interesado en la forma de fijar la luz con su cámara oscura, al enterarse de los trabajos de Niepce le escribió para conocer sus métodos pero éste se negaba con evasivas; tras visitarle varias veces e intentar convencerlo para asociarse, dio por inútiles sus intentos y se lanzó a investigar tenazmente. En 1835 publicó sus primeros resultados del proceso que llamó DAGUERROTIPO, consistente en láminas de cobre plateadas y tratadas con vapores de Yodo. Chris McCaw was born near San Francisco in 1971. At the age of 13, he began making photographs and learning his way around the darkroom. His current series, SUNBURN, aims to push and explore the limits of analog photography. With nods to both Fox Talbot and Nicéphore Niépce, McCaw makes use of extremely long exposures of the sun, some lasting upwards of 24 hours. The images are made directly on to expired photographic paper which solarizes the negative image and often will catch on fire during the long exposures. The Daguerreotype - Photographic Processes Series - Chapter 2 of 12
The first commercially successful photographic process was announced in 1839, the result of over a decade of experimentation by Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce. Unfortunately, Niépce died before the daguerreotype process was realized, and is best known for his invention of the heliograph, the process by which the “first photograph” was made in 1826. Daguerreotypes are sharply defined, highly reflective, one-of-a-kind photographs on silver-coated copper plates, usually packaged behind glass and kept in protective cases. The daguerreotype process is demonstrated in this chapter. The images by Frenchman Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (7 March 1765 - 5 July 1833), who worked with the better-known Louis Daguerre, were taken in the 1820s. Niépce called his images “heliographs” from the Greek helios meaning “drawing with the sun” ... Harding says the images go back “to the genesis of photography” and predate Niépce’s partnership with Daguerre (father of the Daguerreotype) whose work would overshadow his own....
