Members of Hong Kong's legislature will start debate on an election reform bill on Wednesday afternoon. The bill triggered mass student protests last year.
The Hong Kong government put together the reform plan based on a directive from Beijing. It would effectively bar pro-democracy candidates from running for the post of Hong Kong's chief executive.
Pro-democracy protesters and pro-China demonstrators gathered in front of the Legislative Council building on Wednesday morning.
About 50 people, including students, called on Council members to vote against the plan. They shouted that they don't need fake universal suffrage.
