Rita Hayworth's vibrant personality and character burst off the screen in this biography documenting her hugely successful career, but giving the lie to her basically sad and unhappy life, which was dominated by men who apparently wanted to use her as a money-making machine. First her controlling father; her first husband, Edward Judson; Columbia head, Harry Cohn and others. She had five husbands, all who gave her various levels of grief - namely the afore-mentioned Judson, then Orson Welles, followed by Prince Ali Khan, the singer Dick Haymes and lastly James Hill. Rita appeared in more than thirty films in small roles or bit parts - some not even credited - before winning larger roles and starting her career ‘proper'. In spite of the fact that several albums have been issued claiming to be sung by Rita, in films her singing voice was always dubbed. She died, as most know, from a long drawn-out case of Alzheimer's which appears to have begun some twenty years before her ultimate death on 14 May 1987 at 68. The documentary has quotes and comments from the likes of Eli Wallach, Terry Moore, Ann Miller and others and includes many shots from her films, and publicity stills and newspaper shots... Harry Cohn
Harry Cohn (July 23, 1891 – February 27, 1958) was the American president and production director of Columbia Pictures Corporation.
Life and career
Cohn was born to a working-class Jewish family in New York City. His mother, Bella Joseph, was from Russia, and his father, Joseph Cohen, was a tailor from Germany. After working for a time as a streetcar conductor, and then as a promoter for a sheet music printer, he got a job with Universal Pictures, where his brother, Jack Cohn, was already employed. In 1919, Cohn joined his brother and Joe Brandt to found CBC Film Sales Corporation. The initials officially stood for Cohn, Brandt, and Cohn, but Hollywood wags noted the company's low-budget, low-class efforts and nicknamed CBC "Corned Beef and Cabbage." Harry Cohn managed the company's film production in Hollywood, while his brother managed its finances from New York. The relationship between the two brothers was not always good, and Brandt, finding the partnership stressful, eventually sold his third of the company to Harry Cohn, who took over as president, by which time the firm had been renamed Columbia Pictures Corporation.

Rita Hayworth
Rita Hayworth (born Margarita Carmen Cansino; October 17, 1918 – May 14, 1987) was an American actress and dancer. She achieved fame during the 1940s as one of the era's top stars, appearing in a total of 61 films over 37 years. The press coined the term "love goddess" to describe Hayworth after she had become the most glamorous screen idol of the 1940s. She was the top pin-up girl for GIs during World War II.
Hayworth is perhaps best known for her performance in the 1946 film noir, Gilda, opposite Glenn Ford, in which she played the femme fatale in her first major dramatic role. Fred Astaire, with whom she made two films, called her his favorite dance partner. Her greatest success was in the Technicolor musical Cover Girl (1944), with Gene Kelly. She is listed as one of the top 25 female motion picture stars of all time in the American Film Institute's survey, AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars.
In 1980 Hayworth was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, which contributed to her death at age 68. The public disclosure and discussion of her illness drew international attention to Alzheimer's, then a little-known disease, and helped to greatly increase public and private funding for Alzheimer's research.

She had five husbands, all who gave her various levels of grief - namely the afore-mentioned Judson, then Orson Welles, followed by Prince Ali Khan, the singer Dick Haymes and lastly James Hill. Rita appeared in more than thirty films in small roles or bit parts - some not even credited - before winning larger roles and starting her career ‘proper'. In spite of the fact that several albums have been issued claiming to be sung by Rita, in films her singing voice was always dubbed. She died, as most know, from a long drawn-out case of Alzheimer's which appears to have begun some twenty years before her ultimate death on 14 May 1987 at 68. The documentary has quotes and comments from the likes of Eli Wallach, Terry Moore, Ann Miller and others and includes many shots from her films, and publicity stills and newspaper shots... Barfly est réalisé autour d'un script écrit par Charles Bukowski à propos de sa propre vie. Il a aussi écrit un livre (Hollywood) racontant son expérience pénible dans le milieu du cinéma.
Le film a failli ne jamais se faire, en raison des réticences financières de Cannon Films. Shroeder s'est battu pour son projet, allant jusqu'à menacer le producteur de se couper un doigt avec une scie électrique. Et ce chantage a réussi.
L'intervention financière de Francis Ford Coppola a été décisive, et a lancé la réalisation du film.
L'intégralité du film est tournée en décors « naturels » : les bars en particulier, sont d'authentiques rades de Los Angeles.
Le personnage de Wanda représente Jane Cooney Baker, que Buk rencontre à 26 ans, dans un bar de LA. Elle avait alors 36 ans, déjà ravagée par l'alcool. Ils auront ensemble une histoire passionnée et violente, ne se retrouvant que pour boire ensemble. C'est l'époque où Buk écrit des nouvelles qui lui sont presque toutes renvoyées. Jane meurt quelques années plus tard, veillée par Bukowski, qui allait bientôt connaître le début de son succès.
Charles Bukowski fait un caméo dans le rôle d'un pilier de bar. On l'aperçoit de 3/4 lorsque Mickey Rourke quitte sa place au comptoir pour aller s'asseoir à côté de Faye Dunaway.

Barfly est réalisé autour d'un script écrit par Charles Bukowski à propos de sa propre vie. Il a aussi écrit un livre (Hollywood) racontant son expérience pénible dans le milieu du cinéma.
Le film a failli ne jamais se faire, en raison des réticences financières de Cannon Films. Shroeder s'est battu pour son projet, allant jusqu'à menacer le producteur de se couper un doigt avec une scie électrique. Et ce chantage a réussi.
L'intervention financière de Francis Ford Coppola a été décisive, et a lancé la réalisation du film.
L'intégralité du film est tournée en décors « naturels » : les bars en particulier, sont d'authentiques rades de Los Angeles.
Le personnage de Wanda représente Jane Cooney Baker, que Buk rencontre à 26 ans, dans un bar de LA. Elle avait alors 36 ans, déjà ravagée par l'alcool. Ils auront ensemble une histoire passionnée et violente, ne se retrouvant que pour boire ensemble. C'est l'époque où Buk écrit des nouvelles qui lui sont presque toutes renvoyées. Jane meurt quelques années plus tard, veillée par Bukowski, qui allait bientôt connaître le début de son succès.
Charles Bukowski fait un caméo dans le rôle d'un pilier de bar. On l'aperçoit de 3/4 lorsque Mickey Rourke quitte sa place au comptoir pour aller s'asseoir à côté de Faye Dunaway.

Rancher Tim Clark borrows money from Bob Russell, who then rustles Clark's cattle so he will be unable to repay the money. Thus Russell is able to cheat Clark out of his ranch. Clark becomes a prospector for silver and ultimately comes to settle accounts with Russell and crooked deputy Bendix.
John Waynes Latest and Greatest Outdoor Romance
Though in the film John Wayne is second billed to star Tim McCoy he actually has very little to do. Wayne is in the unaccustomed role of sidekick.
Wayne and Wallace MacDonald are the last two ranch hands working for Tim McCoy. He's lost is ranch to crooked banker Wheeler Oakman, but being the good boss and friend he is to Wayne and MacDonald he finds them jobs with neighbor and sweetheart Alice Day.
That might be short term employment for Oakman has designs on the ranch and on Day. Those designs on Day ain't covered by the cowboy code.
McCoy goes off prospecting for a couple of years and no sooner is he back than he's framed for an express company holdup and killing resulting from same. The rest of the movie is McCoy's fight to prove his innocence and save Day from a fate worse than death.
Wheeler Oakman seems to be enjoying his role as villain, he's hamming it up in the best Snidely Whiplash tradition. And Day makes a perfect Little Nell.
Tim McCoy, a silent western star, seems to have made the transition to sound easily enough. He's a stern and upright hero who's bound and determined prove his innocence.
Note good performances by Tully Marshall as the father figure sheriff of the area who believes in McCoy and a young Walter Brennan as his less than scrupulous deputy.
This was the last Columbia movie that John Wayne ever appeared in. It seems as though Harry Cohn thought Wayne was putting the moves on a young starlet who rejected Cohn's advances even though Wayne wasn't involved. But after the Duke became a star and a legend, there wasn't enough money in the world that would get him to appear in a Columbia Studios film.
But realizing this is a B western, it's not the worst one I've ever seen although somehow I doubt we'll ever see a director's cut.
If you are a die-hard John Wayne fan and this is why you are watching this film, you are bound to be disappointed.

This Tim McCoy Columbia Studios Western may have been the forerunner of McDonald's later so popular The Three Mesqueteers. Nearly 900 people are known to have been killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, with aid officials saying up to 90% of some areas has been destroyed.
