Four people were seriously hurt on Tuesday after an accident at Britain’s Alton Towers amusement park, according to the BBC.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said the four teens, two girls and two boys, were trapped on the Smiler ride, about 25 feet (7.6 meters) above the ground.
An Alton Towers spokeswoman told reporters the cause of the two carriage collision is believed to have been a mechanical error.
The Smiler rollercoaster released an empty cab at around 2 p.m., then shortly after a 16 passenger cab was cleared to go.
The mechanical error automatically triggered a failsafe stop, which enabled the empty carriage to stop along the bottom of a loop, according to the BBC, which cited the spokeswoman.
"When the second carriage crashed people were screaming and shouting, even after it stopped,” eyewitness Ben Richardson told the BBC. “Everyone around the park ran over.”
The Smiler, opened in 2013 and is the world’s first roller coaster with 14 loops. It has a maximum speed of 52 mph and its highest drop is roughly 98 feet (30 meters).

After a long 9.5 months of being closed since June 2nd 2015 for obvious reasons, on March 19th The Smiler finally reopened to queues of up to 90 minutes long with full cars going around the tracks once more.
Between then and the filming date of this video (26th March), various parts of the ride have been fixed and changed. This video highlights some of those fixes (for instance The Marmaliser's circular screen with a sharper resolution, the queue screens' resolution fixed, the projection room audio returned and the station announcements returned) as well as some off-ride POV shots from as many angles as I could get into.
(All the footage you see was recorded using my phone.)

Alton Towers theme park has reopened the Smiler roller-coaster today - nine months after an accident which left five people with serious or life-changing injuries.
The venue said it has sought to "learn every possible lesson" from last June's crash before deciding to restart the £18 million ride.
Two teenage passengers - Vicky Balch and Leah Washington - underwent leg amputations after their carriage collided with a stationary car on the Smiler ride on June 2.

ALTON, UK — Four people were seriously injured when a roller coaster car crashed at one of Britain's most popular amusement parks on Tuesday.
The accident happened on the Smiler roller coaster, which holds the Guinness World Record for the most loops of any roller coaster, at the Alton Towers theme park. After the Smiler was closed due to technical issues earlier in the day, an empty roller coaster carriage got stuck and a carriage full of people crashed into the empty one.
The crash left thrill seekers trapped on the ride for almost five hours. Out of the 16 passengers on the car, two men aged 18 and 27 and two women aged 19 and 17 were airlifted to the hospital. One of the injured passengers may lose a leg.
This is the third time in the two years since the ride opened that the Smiler has been closed due to a malfunction. Back in July of 2013, pieces of the ride fell off, and 48 people had to be evacuated. In November 2013, guide wheels flew off the ride, injuring one of the passengers.

Alton Towers is a theme park and resort located in Staffordshire, England. It attracts around 2.7 million visitors per year making it the most visited theme park in the United Kingdom. Alton Towers is also the 9th most visited theme park in Europe. It is based north of the village of Alton in Staffordshire (approximately 16 miles (26 km) east of Stoke-on-Trent, and not to be confused with the town of Alton in Hampshire), in the grounds of Alton Towers, a semi-ruined gothic revival country house. The estate was a former seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury.
The resort includes the theme park as well as Alton Towers Hotel, Splash Landings Hotel, Waterpark, Spa, Extraordinary Golf and Conference Centre. It is the flagship attraction of Merlin Entertainments in the United Kingdom. Major attractions at Alton Towers include Nemesis, Oblivion, Air, Rita and Th13teen.
The park's promotional music is In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg.
An Iron Age fort was built on Bunbury Hill (c.1st-century BC) which is now occupied by the Alton Towers estate. In about 700 AD, the Saxon king Ceolred of Mercia built a fortress on the hill. But King Ine of Wessex besieged the site in 716 AD. The ensuing battle, which ended in stalemate, caused such a loss of life the place was called Slain Hollow (which later became the estate's oriental water garden).

The Smiler Returns (60FPS)
After a long 9.5 months of being closed since June 2nd 2015 for obvious reasons, on March 19th The Smiler finally reopened to queues of up to 90 minutes long with full cars going around the tracks once more. Between then and the filming date of this video (26th March), various parts of the ride have been fixed and changed. This video highlights some of those fixes (for instance The Marmaliser's circular screen with a sharper resolution, the queue screens' resolution fixed, the projection room audio returned and the station announcements returned) as well as some off-ride POV shots from as many angles as I could get into. Alton Towers: Smiler ride reopens nine months after crash
Alton Towers theme park has reopened the Smiler roller-coaster today - nine months after an accident which left five people with serious or life-changing injuries. The venue said it has sought to "learn every possible lesson" from last June's crash before deciding to restart the £18 million ride. Two teenage passengers - Vicky Balch and Leah Washington - underwent leg amputations after their carriage collided with a stationary car on the Smiler ride on June 2. -

Roller coaster crash at Alton Towers, the Smiler injures four passengers - TomoNews
ALTON, UK — Four people were seriously injured when a roller coaster car crashed at one of Britain's most popular amusement parks on Tuesday. The accident happened on the Smiler roller coaster, which holds the Guinness World Record for the most loops of any roller coaster, at the Alton Towers theme park. After the Smiler was closed due to technical issues earlier in the day, an empty roller coaster carriage got stuck and a carriage full of people crashed into the empty one. The crash left thrill seekers trapped on the ride for almost five hours. Out of the 16 passengers on the car, two men aged 18 and 27 and two women aged 19 and 17 were airlifted to the hospital. The Smiler, 'the world's first 14 loop roller coaster' opened at Alton Towers on 31/5/13. Video includes POVs, off-ride footage, the queue line, and even a roll-back on the vertical lift! The Smiler seems a lot bigger when you're in the Q underneath the ride than it seems in photos, and is really good to watch when the trains duel. There's loads of great theme-ing and things to look at while waiting, and a great shop full of merchandise. The first of a new kind of train from Gerstlauer, enthusiasts were worried if it will be as painful to ride as Saw & other Eurofighter roller coasters - its early days, but rides comfortably, although repeat riding lead to headaches among enthusiasts I spoke with on opening day. Four people were seriously hurt on Tuesday after an accident at Britain’s Alton Towers amusement park, according to the BBC.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said the four teens, two girls and two boys, were trapped on the Smiler ride, about 25 feet (7.6 meters) above the ground.
An Alton Towers spokeswoman told reporters the cause of the two carriage collision is believed to have been a mechanical error.
The Smiler rollercoaster released an empty cab at around 2 p.m., then shortly after a 16 passenger cab was cleared to go.
The mechanical error automatically triggered a failsafe stop, which enabled the empty carriage to stop along the bottom of a loop, according to the BBC, which cited the spokeswoman.
"When the second carriage crashed people were screaming and shouting, even after it stopped,” eyewitness Ben Richardson told the BBC. “Everyone around the park ran over.”
The Smiler, opened in 2013 and is the world’s first roller coaster with 14 loops. It has a maximum speed of 52 mph and its highest drop is roughly 98 feet (30 meters).

After a long 9.5 months of being closed since June 2nd 2015 for obvious reasons, on March 19th The Smiler finally reopened to queues of up to 90 minutes long with full cars going around the tracks once more.
Between then and the filming date of this video (26th March), various parts of the ride have been fixed and changed. This video highlights some of those fixes (for instance The Marmaliser's circular screen with a sharper resolution, the queue screens' resolution fixed, the projection room audio returned and the station announcements returned) as well as some off-ride POV shots from as many angles as I could get into.

After the Smiler was closed due to technical issues earlier in the day, an empty roller coaster carriage got stuck and a carriage full of people crashed into the empty one.
The crash left thrill seekers trapped on the ride for almost five hours. Out of the 16 passengers on the car, two men aged 18 and 27 and two women aged 19 and 17 were airlifted to the hospital. One of the injured passengers may lose a leg.
This is the third time in the two years since the ride opened that the Smiler has been closed due to a malfunction. Back in July of 2013, pieces of the ride fell off, and 48 people had to be evacuated. In November 2013, guide wheels flew off the ride, injuring one of the passengers.

The Smiler, 'the world's first 14 loop roller coaster' opened at Alton Towers on 31/5/13. Video includes POVs, off-ride footage, the queue line, and even a roll-back on the vertical lift!
The Smiler seems a lot bigger when you're in the Q underneath the ride than it seems in photos, and is really good to watch when the trains duel. There's loads of great theme-ing and things to look at while waiting, and a great shop full of merchandise.
The first of a new kind of train from Gerstlauer, enthusiasts were worried if it will be as painful to ride as Saw & other Eurofighter roller coasters - its early days, but rides comfortably, although repeat riding lead to headaches among enthusiasts I spoke with on opening day.
Has the magic returned to Alton Towers? - YES!! - The Smiler is a FANTASTIC attraction, the ride is great fun if not the tallest or fastest roller coaster, but much of its enjoyment for me, was watching it.
I dedicate this video for Adam, Dan, & everyone who turned up on 23/5/13!
