Gandhi is a 1982 biographical film based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who led the nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial rule in India during the first half of the 20th century. The film was directed and produced by Sir Richard Attenborough and stars Ben Kingsley as Gandhi. They both won Academy Awards for their work on the film. The film was also given the Academy Award for Best Picture and won eight Academy Awards.
It was an international co-production between production companies in India and the UK. The film premiered in New Delhi on 30 November 1982.
The screenplay of Gandhi is available as a published book. The film opens with a statement from the filmmakers explaining their approach to the problem of filming Gandhi's complex life story:
The film begins with Gandhi's assassination on 30 January 1948, and his funeral. After an evening prayer, an elderly Gandhi is helped out for his evening walk to meet a large number of greeters and admirers. One of these visitors—Nathuram Godse—shoots him point blank in the chest. Gandhi exclaims, "Oh, God!" ("Hē Ram!" historically), and then falls dead. The film then cuts to a huge procession at his funeral, which is attended by dignitaries from around the world.

The flashbacks start in 1947 as Jinnah pleads for a separate nation from the Muslim regime, infuriating Lord Mountbatten. However, Jinnah turns down the offer to become prime minister and the film takes another slide back to 1916, which reveals all of the political implications that have occurred.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah: [to a fundamentalist] You are an ignorant fool. I have fought for your mother, your sister, and your children's children to live in dignity. Islam doesn't need fanatics like you, Islam needs men of vision who will build the country. Now grow up, and serve Pakistan!
The historical film about the last days of the British Raj.
I had a dream, Mr. King, if you'll beg my pardon
I was trespassing a sacred garden
And the blossoms fell and they dropped like candy
And the nature cried, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
And the nature cried, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
When he was, when he was a boy, he was afraid of the dark
And his mother would fast and pray at his feet
The lamp burned as he slept, slept as he dreamed
He was dreaming' of his sisters, dressed in white muslin
Dressed in white muslin, dancing in a ring
He was afraid of the dark and the lamp burned
And his mother fasted and prayed as he slept
Dreaming of blossoms, they were burning his throat
He had eaten flowers, fell burning
Flowers fell burning from the young girls' hair
He was whispering into his God's ear
Let the children be so, let children be so
And the lamplight flickered, flickered
And his mother withered like Job
And he lay there dreaming and the blossoms fell
And Tilak's trumpet proceeded to call
And the blossoms fell and they dropped like candy
And the people cried, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
Gandhi, Gandhi, Gandhi, Gandhi
I had a dream Mr. King, well, beg my pardon
I was trespassing the sacred garden
And the blossoms fell, well, they dropped like candy
And nature cried, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
Hey, little man, awake from your slumber
Get 'em with the numbers
Get 'em with the numbers
He is frail and shy and the cast of his mind
Was mercurial, was mercurial
As the sacred verbs scrawled in the dust
Scrawled in the dust on the floor, on the floor
Long live revolution and the spinning wheel
And a handful of salt and a handful of salt
And the untouchables felt like candy
They called to him, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
The children of God with hands full of candy
They called to him, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
Feel our woes, man of the giving
Rejoin the living, rejoin the living
Awake from the net where you've been sleeping
And they're climbing, climbing, the burning hair
And the burning flowers from the young girls
Well, they dropped all around, they dropped like candy
The people cried, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
Awake little man, awake from your slumber
And get 'em with the numbers
Get 'em with the numbers
One, two, three, four hundred thousand million
People, people, people, people
Awake from your slumber, awake from your slumber
Awake from your slumber
And get 'em with the numbers
Get 'em with the numbers
Long live revolution and the spinning wheel
Awake, awake is the mighty appeal
Oh, people awake, awake from your slumber
And get 'em with the numbers
Get 'em with the numbers
I had a dream Mr. King, if you'll beg my pardon
I was trespassing the sacred garden
And the blossoms fell, dropped like candy
And nature called, "Gandhi, Gandhi"
Gandhi, Gandhi
Awake from your slumber
Awake from your slumber
And get 'em with the numbers
I wanted to be like Jesus
but I turned out like Judas
I schemed a lot and I cheated my way through
I lied to me and I lied to you
I wanted to be like Buda
But I turned out like Nixon
Betrayed the trust of the common man
Don't look down there's so much blood on my hands
Gandhi, yeah
Gandhi, yeah
Gandhi, yeah
I wanted to be like Gandhi
but I turned out like Hitler
A little wacked
A little power
I killed them all in my finest hour
Gandhi, yeah
Gandhi, yeah
Gandhi, yeah
Gandhi, yeah
Gandhi, yeah
I wanna find peace like Mahatma Gandhi
Wanna drink champagne and be cool like Blondie
Buy a backpack, let's leave the country
Cause if I got you, I'm gonna be alright
If I got you I'm gonna be alright
Say hello to my naked dream
Where the strong will follow and the weak will lead
Look around you it's time to leave
La, la, la, la, la, la
Close your eyes, I'll take you there
I wanna find peace like Mahatma Gandhi,
Wanna drink champagne and be cool like Blondie,
Buy a backpack, let's leave the country
Cause If I got you I'm gonna be alright
I wanna fly a kite off the wall of China
I wanna go shopping like Winona Ryder
I got two coach tickets on a jet airliner
Cause if I got you I'm gonna be alright
If I got you, I'm gonna be alright
Say hello with the Buddha's eyes,
Say you're scared I can sympathize
That will fade once we reach the sky,
La, la, la, la, la, la
Close your eyes, I'll take you there
I wanna find peace like Mahatma Gandhi,
Wanna drink champagne and be cool like Blondie,
Buy a backpack, let's leave the country
Cause If I got you I'm gonna be alright
I wanna fly a kite off the wall of China
I wanna go shopping like Winona Ryder
I got two coach tickets on a jet airliner
Cause if I got you I'm gonna be alright
If I got you, I'm gonna be alright
Goodbye to air we can barely breath,
We try, but is this really the life we thought it would be?
Life's a rocket that flies on by,
You can't slow it down or press rewind
I wanna find peace like Mahatma Gandhi,
Wanna drink champagne and be cool like Blondie,
Buy a backpack, let's leave the country
Cause If I got you I'm gonna be alright
I wanna fly a kite off the wall of China
I wanna go shopping like Winona Ryder
I got two coach tickets on a jet airliner
Cause if I got you I'm gonna be alright
If I got you, I'm gonna be alright
