The Obama adminstration has ordered the urgent deployment of several hundred armed troops in and around Iraq, after the rampant insurgency in the country forced the first talks between the US and Iran over a common security interest in more than a decade. Barack Obama discussed the crisis with national security team on Monday night after earlier notifying Congress that up to 275 troops could be sent to Iraq to provide support and security for personnel and the US embassy in Baghdad. While Obama has vowed to keep US troops out of combat in Iraq, he said in his notification to Congress that the personnel moving into the region were equipped for direct fighting. In addition, officials told Reuters that the White House was considering sending a contingent of special forces to train and advise beleaguered Iraqi troops, many of whom have fled their posts in the face of the insurgency. About 170 US personnel have already arrived in Baghdad -- almost as many as those already there -- with another 100 nearby outside Iraq to assist, rear admiral John Kirby said in a statement from the Pentagon late Monday. Obama sent a letter to Congress Monday informing them of the decision -- a signal that the administration does not want to risk another disaster at an under-guarded embassy akin to the assault on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya that remains a major controversy on the right. The moves were made in advance of any decision Obama may yet make on attacking the Isis fighters currently threatening Iraq. US and Iranian officials held talks over the crisis in Iraq on Monday. The discussions in Vienna took place on the sidelines of separate negotiations about Iran's nuclear programme, amid conflicting signals in Washington over the extent of any coordination with Tehran over the crisis in Iraq. John Kerry, the US secretary of state, pointedly declined to rule out military cooperation in an interview on Monday, but US and Iranian officials later stressed that there was no prospect of military coordination, and none was discussed in Vienna, where talks were described as short and inconclusive. "We are open to engaging the Iranians," said a senior State Department official, who characterised the discussions as brief. "These engagements will not include military coordination or strategic determinations about Iraq's future over the heads of the Iraqi people," the US official said, on condition of anonymity. The Iranians confirmed that military cooperation was not on the cards. "The disastrous situation in Iraq was discussed today. No specific outcome was achieved," a senior Iranian official told Reuters. Fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) have rapidly advanced through mostly Sunni areas of Iraq in recent days, capturing several cities. It was reported on Monday that they had taken Tal Afar, a northern Iraqi city. On Sunday, the insurgent fighters posted images purporting to show the execution of hundreds of Shia fighters. Obama said in his notification to Congress that the military personnel being sent to Iraq would provide support and security for the American embassy in Baghdad, but was "equipped for combat". "This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed," he said. In Iraq on Monday, the capital, Baghdad, remained outside the grasp of Isis. But the mayor of Tal Afar, a city of 200,000 people located 260 miles north-west of Baghdad, told the Associated Press that the insurgent group was in control there. A resident said militants in pickup trucks with machine guns and jihadi banners were roaming the streets as gunfire rang out. Fighting in Tal Afar began on Sunday, with Iraqi government officials saying Isis fighters were firing rockets seized from military arms depots in the Mosul area. They said the local garrison suffered heavy casualties and the main hospital was unable to cope with the wounded. There were fears that militants would carry out further atrocities in Tal Afar, which is ethnically mixed and made up of Shias and Sunni Turkomen. Claims at the weekend that the insurgents had killed 1,700 Iraqi soldiers could not be verified. But pictures, on a militant website, appear to show masked Isis fighters loading captives on to flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie facedown in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs. ISIS fighters planted their flag on a hill on the eastern side of Kobani, then punched through defenses to open up the route for more troops, one witness inside the city told CNN. CNN crews on Monday also spotted what appeared to be the black flag of ISIS flying from a hilltop on the eastern side of the city. The flag was farther east into the city from one shown flying atop a building in video from Reuters and also seen by the CNN crews. Many Kurdish forces defending the city were wounded and killed, and many ISIS fighters were also killed as clashes spread from street to street, the witness said. The fall of the city would carry huge symbolic and strategic weight, giving ISIS sway over an uninterrupted swatch of land between the Turkish border and its self-declared capital in Raqqa, Syria, 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. The Turkish military, which has bulked up its defenses along the border in recent days as the fighting has flared, blocked people fleeing the embattled city from crossing the border. "We want to go across!" would-be refugees chanted as they pressed against a border fence. One witness inside Kobani told CNN he'd been waiting to leave the city with hundreds of others since Sunday night. "We'll get killed if we stay," he said. As ISIS fighters attacked with tanks and heavy artillery, the city's defenders vowed to keep fighting. "We are afraid of this. We are obliged to defend our home, our town," Kurdish Kobani official Idriss Nassan said. "We didn't choose this war, but we are obliged to fight." A Isis-Isil did not seem to result in waste products and couldn't be found in forests, jungles, rivers, lakes, oceans, etc... In fact, Isis-Isil produced some positive effects on our sweet little nature. Political Factors Oh does Isis-Isil ever influence politics. Last year 5 candidates running for some sort of position used Isis-Isil as the primary topic of their campaign. A person might think Isis-Isil would be a bad topic to lead a campaign with, but in fact with the social and environmental impact is has, this topic was able to gain a great number of followers. These 5 candidates went 4 for 5 on winning their positions. Conclusion Isis-Isil seem to be a much more important idea that most give credit for. Next time you see or think of Isis-Isil, think about what you just read and realize what is really going on. It is likely you under valued Isis-Isil before, but will now start to give the credited needed and deserved. As ISIS continue to make territorial gains in the Middle East, they are also becoming a dynamic presence online. While President Bush's new "surge" strategy is sending thousands of new troops to Iraq to help control the violence convulsing the country, the effort to stand up Iraqi forces and go after the militias remains a centerpiece of America's strategy. But can it work? FRONTLINE spent two months in Iraq in the fall of 2006 and was embedded with 11-man U.S. advisory teams working with Iraqi forces. GANGS OF IRAQ tracks the history and events that led to the current sectarian crisis, why the Iraqi elections didn't curb escalating Shia-Sunni sectarianism, and how top Iraqi officials have downplayed or denied the growing sectarian militia forces. By the summer of 2006, the coalition had identified at least 23 militias operating in Baghdad. Some were small splinter groups or criminal gangs. Iraqi Army Still Fighting Against Militants Linked Al-Qaeda in Fallujah and Anbar.Who win the control of Iraq ? Battles are Spreading Other Districts ... As fighters linked to al-Qaeda take over parts of Anbar province, we ask how big a threat they pose to Iraq and Syria. An offensive by fighters linked to al-Qaeda in western Iraq is challenging the authority of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and testing local loyalties. There may be some challenges in reconciliation between the Sunnis in Anbar and the central government, but that's a low-level political matter that needs to be worked out in the long run. The near-term existential threat to Iraq, and in particular to the Sunnis in Anbar, is the presence of al-Qaeda .... The key element now is to defeat al-Qaeda. Mark Kimmitt, a retired brigadier general in the US army The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIL, has taken over parts of Fallujah and Ramadi, which are both Sunni strongholds in Anbar province. Fighters are reported to have stormed police stations, seized weapons, freed prisoners, and set buildings on fire. The group is said to be supported by local Sunni tribal fighters and has been bolstered by cross-border ties with its affiliate in Syria. Iraqi government forces have been accused of failing to get a grip on security since US troops pulled out of the country two years ago, with 2013 cited as the deadliest year in Iraq since 2008. Some Sunni's also claim they have been marginalised, and accuse Maliki's Shia-led government of discrimination. Even so, while some tribal militias are supporting ISIL, others are backing the security forces, making for a complex three-way fight. It harks back to the days of the so-called Sahwa militia or Awakening Councils when Sunni tribesmen turned their guns on al-Qaeda, opting to support US troops instead. In February 2004, control of Fallujah and the surrounding area in the Al-Anbar province was transferred from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division to the 1st Marine Division. Shortly afterward, on 31 March 2004, four American private military contractors from Blackwater USA were ambushed and killed in the city. Images of their mutilated bodies were broadcast around the world. U.S. Marine Corps forces launched Operation Vigilant Resolve (4 April 2004) to take back control of the city from insurgent forces. On 28 April 2004, Operation Vigilant Resolve ended with an agreement where the local population was ordered to keep the insurgents out of the city. Operation Phantom Fury — was a joint American, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004, considered the highest point of conflict in Fallujah during the Iraq War. A specialist team of British soldiers has been sent to Iraq to train Kurdish forces fighting Islamist extremists. The Ministry of Defence has said a "small specialist team" of UK soldiers are in Iraq and working near the front line of the fight between the Islamic State (IS) and Kurdish fighters. Based near the Kurdish capital of Irbil in the north, they are training peshmerga forces in the use of heavy machine guns the UK supplied to them in September. The Sunday Times reported that the soldiers were from the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, which is based in Cyprus. An MoD spokeswoman said: "The Government has previously made clear its intention to provide training to the peshmerga as part of the continued effort to assist in the fight against Isil (IS). "The Defence Secretary has approved the deployment of a small specialist team of non-combat Army trainers which is now in the Irbil area providing instruction on operating, employing and maintaining the heavy machine guns that were gifted by the UK last month." British troops invaded Iraq in March 2003 to overthrow Saddam Hussein. The last British combat troops from the war left in April 2009, with a small number staying on to train Iraqi forces until 2011. RAF Tornado fighter jets have been involved in US-led bombing raids on IS fighters for the past two weeks. But there is strong resistance among British politicians to any ground troop involvement in fighting against the Islamist group, which controls vast areas of Iraq and Syria.- published: 19 Feb 2015

Earlier this month, IS published a video showing militants burning alive a Jordanian air force pilot, whose plane crashed in Syria in December. Siege Al-Baghdadi had been besieged for months by Islamic State fighters before its fall on Thursday. It had been one of the few towns to still be controlled by the Iraqi government in Anbar province, where IS and allied Sunni Arab tribesmen launched an offensive in January 2014. Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm John Kirby told reporters on Friday that al-Baghdadi's capture needed to be put in perspective. He said it was the first time in the last couple of months that the jihadist group had taken new ground. However, Ain al-Asad air base, where about 320 US Marines are training members of the Iraqi army's 7th Division, is only 8km (5 miles) away. He said it was the first time in the last couple of months that the jihadist group had taken new ground. However, Ain al-Asad air base, where about 320 US Marines are training members of the Iraqi army's 7th Division, is only 8km (5 miles) away. he CIA, working with U.S. troops during the occupation of Iraq, repeatedly purchased nerve-agent rockets from a secretive Iraqi seller, part of a previously undisclosed effort to ensure that old chemical weapons remaining in Iraq did not fall into the hands of terrorists or militant groups, according to current and former U.S. officials. The extraordinary arms purchase plan, known as Operation Avarice, began in 2005 and continued into 2006, and the U.S. military deemed it a nonproliferation success. It led the United States to acquire and destroy at least 400 Borak rockets, one of the internationally condemned chemical weapons that Saddam Hussein's Baathist government manufactured in the 1980s but that were not accounted for by U.N. inspections mandated after the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The effort was run out of the CIA station in Baghdad in collaboration with the Army's 203rd Military Intelligence Battalion and teams of chemical-defense and explosive ordnance disposal troops, officials and veterans of the units said. Many rockets were in poor condition and some were empty or held a nonlethal liquid, the officials said. But others contained the nerve agent sarin, which analysis showed to be purer than the intelligence community had expected given the age of the stock. A New York Times investigation published in October found that the military had recovered thousands of old chemical warheads and shells in Iraq and that Americans and Iraqis had been wounded by them, but the government kept much of this information secret, from the public and troops alike. The potency of sarin samples from the purchases, as well as tightly held assessments about risks the munitions posed, buttresses veterans' claims that during the war the military did not share important intelligence about battlefield perils with those at risk or maintain an adequate medical system for treating victims of chemical exposure. The purchases were made from a sole Iraqi source who was eager to sell his stock, officials said. The amount of money that the United States paid for the rockets is not publicly known, and neither are the affiliations of the seller. Most of the officials and veterans who spoke about the program did so anonymously because, they said, the details remain classified. The CIA declined to comment. The Pentagon, citing continuing secrecy about the effort, did not answer written questions and acknowledged its role only obliquely. "Without speaking to any specific programs, it is fair to say that together with our coalition partners in Iraq, the U.S. military worked diligently to find and remove weapons that could be used against our troops and the Iraqi people," Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said in a written statement. Retired Army Lt. Gen. Richard P. Zahner, the top U.S. military intelligence officer in Iraq in 2005 and 2006, said he did not know of any other intelligence program as successful in reducing the chemical weapons that remained in Iraq after the American-led invasion. Through the CIA's purchases, Zahner said, hundreds of weapons with potential use for terrorists were quietly taken off the market. Tribal leader Iraqi troops in Anbar could 'collapse within hours' An Iraqi tribal leader said Saturday that ISIS militants are gaining ground in Anbar province, predicting a "collapse within hours" of Iraqi army forces there if tribal forces withdraw. Sheikh Naim al-Gaoud, a Sunni Muslim leader of the Albu Nimr tribe, called for more U.S. intervention -- including ground troops, arming tribes directly or at least pressuring the Iraqi government to give the tribes more firepower. While U.S. officials have said that ISIS, which calls itself the Islamic State, is on the defensive in Iraq and Syria, al-Gaoud says that's definitely not the case where he is. "In Anbar, we are losing ground, not gaining," he said. Thousands of families had been under siege in the Anbar town of Jubbat al-Shamiya until getting help Friday from U.S.-led coalition airstrikes and Iraqi forces, according to al-Gaoud. But he said Iraqi troops had pulled out of Jubbat al-Shamiya on Saturday, at which time ISIS was shelling the town. If the Islamist extremist group's fighters go in, al-Gaoud predicted a massacre. Key base attacked Anbar province is just west of Baghdad, meaning a decisive ISIS victory would put ISIS on the footsteps of the Iraqi capital. It's also home to the strategic Ayn al-Assad Air Base, which came under attack Friday. Talking about that battle, Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said 20 to 25 people -- most, if not all, of whom were wearing Iraqi military uniforms and were led by suicide bombers -- attacked the huge, nearly 25-square-mile base. "It looks like (ISIS militants) at least got to the outer base limits," Kirby said. At least 13 Iraqi soldiers died in the assault, according to al-Gaoud, which ended with Iraqi ground forces killing all the attackers. U.S. troops were on the base at the time, but "several kilometers" from where the fighting happened, Kirby said. The U.S. military did deploy Apache attack helicopters in that ISIS assault, but the Apaches returning safely without firing a shot, military sources said. American helicopter gunships were also involved in a fight supporting Iraqi ground forces about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north in the Anbar town of al-Baghdadi, according to sources. Al-Gaoud, the Albu Mimr tribal leader, said militants killed at least 25 Iraqi police officers during their assault on that town Thursday and Friday. ISIS took over al-Baghdadi on Friday. Anbar province key in multiple ways Anbar is important not just for its location, for the al-Assad base or for the Haditha dam, Iraq's second largest. It's also significant for its sectarian breakdown -- as a mostly Sunni province in a Shiite-led country. Sectarian divisions have hurt Iraq before, with ISIS' rampage through much of Iraq (as well as neighboring Syria) blamed in part to the country's lack of unity. It's one reason for then-Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's exit last year, replaced by current leader Haider al-Abadi. The U.S. government has gotten involved to address such tensions as part of its anti-terrorism fight, like President Barack Obama's warning last June -- a few months before al-Maliki stepped down -- that "there won't be a military solution" unless Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds all play significant parts in Iraq's command structure. Years before, in the mid-2000s, the United States recruited and paid Sunnis like members of al-Gaoud's Albu Mimr tribe to join its fight against al Qaeda. Those efforts helped turn the tide in the war. But now, al-Gaoud says, ISIS -- which consists of Sunni extremists -- is making his tribe pay the price. "There are people who will be killed in cold blood, and there will be more massacres," al-Gaoud told CNN in November. "We are getting killed because of our friendship with the Americans. The Iraqi Army is the ground component of the Iraqi military, active in various forms since being formed by the British during their mandate over the country after World War I.
Today, it is tasked with assuming responsibility for all Iraqi land-based military operations following the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The Iraqi Army was rebuilt along U.S. lines with enormous amounts of U.S. military assistance at every level. Because of the low-level ongoing Iraqi insurgency as of 2006, the Iraqi Army was designed to be an objective counter-insurgency force for a period of time until the insurgency is diminished to a level that the police can handle. Thereafter, the Iraqi Army will undergo a modernisation plan which includes purchasing more heavy equipment.
The threat of war with newly forming Republic of Turkey, which claimed the Ottoman vilayet of Mosul as part of their country, led the British to form the Iraqi Army on 6 January 1921. The Mussa Al-Kadhum Brigade consisted of ex-Iraqi-Ottoman officers, whose barracks were located in Al Kazemiyah. The United Kingdom provided support and training to the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Air Force through a small military mission based in Baghdad.
