The 2011 Edwin O. Reischauer Lectures Undoing/Redoing Modern Sino-Japanese Cultural and Intellectual History, Benjamin A. Elman, Princeton University From Harvard University's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies watch Elman reintegrate the history of "traditional Chinese medicine" with other themes associated with the intellectual history of classical learning in East Asia from 1600 to 1800 mentioned in the second lecture. This was a time when classical learning enabled rising social statuses for the classically literate. Normally these fields are studied separately as "Confucianism" (儒學) or "medicine" (醫學), with little effort to integrate them thematically in light of the history of ideas or according to the cultural geography of classical learning in East Asia. Doctors, mathematicians, and philologists shared the same classical texts known in East Asia as the Confucian "classics," mathematical "classics," and medical "classics." Physicians and mathematicians throughout East Asia were as classically literate as Mandarin scholar-officials who passed civil examinations. In the late eighteenth century, in particular, Japanese scholars and physicians interested in Chinese classical studies adapted Chinese philological research techniques of paleography, etymology, and phonology. Why did newly emerging Japanese elites prioritize classical Chinese as a language of learning and focus on Chinese medical texts for medical studies? Why did "medical philology" in Japan produce a divisive cleavage between Sinophobes and Sinophiles, and what was at stake? Living in Kaneš and separated from her husband in Aššur, Aššur-nādā's second wife Šišahšušar presents us with a short narrative which is as intriguing as it is allusive. In a quantitative SNA study of 2,000 Old Assyrian letters, we direct our attention to a dozen textual references of this one individual, and in doing so, we are thrust into the challenging world of venture capitalism in the Bronze Age (ca. 1850 BCE) from the perspective of this lesser-known female. Then, expanding from her immediate social network outward, we will learn about Šišahšušar’s position and membership in the trade colony, and see the crucial role that women in Anatolia played for the numerous business ventures in the colony. Lastly, we then expand our view once again in order to briefly discuss the overall role that the local Anatolians play in this fantastic collection of cuneiform tablets. The Museum of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan. The Rare Texts Exhibition Room: An Illustration of the Promotion of Official Ranks: This book with a title about the promotion in official rank is actually an example of vernacular drama and the master copy for a play. A glance at the title might lead you to think it has something to do with officialdom, but it’s actually just a ruse…the contents are none other than the erotic novel The Plum in a Golden Vase. The plot continues from the previous book, Stratagem for Raising the Screen, describing the first rendezvous between the lovers Ximen Qing and Pan Jinlian. It is then followed by the book Grape Trellis, which is a flat-out erotic description. The Chinese songs in the book almost always have an official title to give the erotic contents an appearance of respectability, with many of them also a play on words. Though all the Manchu official titles have transliterations in Chinese to the side, readers who could not understand Manchu would still have been unable to grasp the erotic allusions. This type of libretto might very well have been for the amusement of junior elite among the Manchu, perhaps made by a young upperclass male in the Eight Banners during the 18th century and circulating in the Beijing, Tianjian, and northeastern areas. The contents mostly derive from stories in novels and plays of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Download: http://bit.do/VNJj Description Many today do not recognize the word, but “philology” was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only the study of Greek and Roman literature and the Bible but also all other studies of language and literature, as well as religion, history, culture, art, archaeology, and more. In short, philology was the queen of the human sciences. How did it become little more than an archaic word? In Philology, the first history of Western humanistic learning as a connected whole ever published in English, James Turner tells the fascinating, forgotten story of how the study of languages and texts led to the modern humanities and the modern university.

noodls 2015-03-26Philology is the study of language in written historical sources; it is a combination of literary studies, history and linguistics.
Classical philology is the philology of Greek and Classical Latin. Classical philology is historically primary, originating in European Renaissance Humanism, but was soon joined by philologies of other languages both European (Germanic, Celtic, Slavistics, etc.) and non-European (Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Chinese, etc.). Indo-European studies involves the comparative philology of all Indo-European languages.
Any classical language can be studied philologically, and indeed describing a language as "classical" is to imply the existence of a philological tradition associated with it.
Because of its focus on historical development (diachronic analysis), philology came to be used as a term contrasting with linguistics. This is due to a 20th-century development triggered by Ferdinand de Saussure's insistence on the importance of synchronic analysis, and the later emergence of structuralism and Chomskian linguistics with its emphasis on syntax.
The Brothers Grimm (German: Brüder Grimm or Die Gebrüder Grimm), Jakob Grimm (January 4, 1785 – September 20, 1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (February 24, 1786 – December 16, 1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who together collected folklore. They are among the most well-known storytellers of European folk tales, and their work popularized such stories as "Cinderella", "The Frog Prince" (Der Froschkönig), "Hansel and Gretel" (Hänsel und Gretel), "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstiltskin" (Rumpelstilzchen), and "Snow White" (Schneewittchen). Their first collection of folk tales, Children's and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen), was published in 1812.
The brothers spent their formative years first in the German town of Hanau and then in Steinau. Their father's death in 1796, about a decade into their lives, caused great poverty for the family and affected the brothers for many years. They attended the University of Marburg where historian and jurist Friedrich von Savigny spurred their interest in philology and Germanic studies—a field in which they are now considered pioneers—and at the same time developed a curiosity for folklore, which grew into a life-long dedication to collecting German folk tales.
Petals ripen glisten with yearning
Sanctified vessel inflamed
Fervent fingers twitch the gulf is closed
Envelop the pillar of alabaster
Cockroach entrenches in some awful orifice
Excavating living tissue
Barbaric caress - greased up and slick
pain scraping a backwards bending
Clamps smear open a warm paradise
Ribcage and vertebral column contracted tight
Bars stretched beneath the skin
Lips pulled back and drawn for curing
Penetrate - probing swollen infestation
Fisted into comprehension
Rigid so to bend contorted and suffer
Straight jacket of sadism
Phallelujah
Sanguinary rite of passage
Sweet tongues of fire
Phallelujah
Paroxims of union
Phallelujah
Judas tongue scrapes spit
Bites the hand that feed it
Infectious features baring cracked teeth
Bleeding gums of joy
Phallelujah...
Flaying souls breach the vestal wall
Chorus of angels consortium of pain
Enriched blood of freshly esoterica
Mingles with man in fluid form
Outpouring thrust pelvic abominations
Thick film of sweat grim lubrication
Soon to suckle maggots at her breasts

They want to live, and to come
All your courage, they want to feel
Some of them want to cry, they want the answers
Just before them sigh
Oh but, some of them a realize yeah,
Some a dem know life yeah,
Some a them feel life yeah,
Some of them know life yeah,
Work as long as them live,
Live just as long as them love
Love if they were to remember
Would be the first spark, glow, life
But they shine away love Jah, as they shine away God
And they shine away fear, Lord, as them shy a way call
Calling all the answer, calling all the answer, sastra
The answers ancestral, the answers in wo-o-o-oh
All a dem haffe live, all a dem haffe cry
All a dem haffe know, all dem haffe suffer dem
All a dem have to live, all a dem haffe suffer dem
All a dem haffe cry, all of dem live Jah
As long as them live Jah, as long as them care for them
As long as they love Jah, I&I; a friend to them who go
As long as them cultural, as long as them spiritual
As long as dem physical,
In a world of new man media...
If they were to know, what they could never give Jah
Their lives I'm sure today,
They have come to oppress yeah
See as them see, and if you knew what they know
Your feelings in your heart would change
As I'm sure they must wear
Oh I'm sure they must wear
Sure they must wear
Sure they must wear
But we're under heavy weather
Some of them under heavy manners
Oh all of de man shooters, they think they carrying
The answer
Believe it if you would I, want them to see them
And if you would I, want them to know them
For they spear the eyes at Goshen
And they back the ancient leaving
And they hail their life of thunder
Just as we'll break their bonds some day
Following them into the heart of the ancient throne
Into the heart of the ancient goal, into the heart
Some a, some a, some a, some dem still
Feel Jah, they will know
As long as they love, they will know
Feel Jah yeah
Some of them still feel Jah yeah
All of them feel Jah yeah
Yeah, yeah
