Manila (English: /məˈnɪlə/; Tagalog: Maynila, [majˈnilaʔ]) is the capital of the Philippines. It is one of the sixteen cities (along with the smaller municipality of Pateros) that comprise Metro Manila.
Manila is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay and is bordered by Navotas and Caloocan to the north; Quezon City to the northeast; San Juan and Mandaluyong to the east; Makati to the southeast, and Pasay to the south.
Manila has a total population of more than 1,652,171 according to the 2010 census. Manila is the second most populous city in the Philippines, behind its neighbor, Quezon City. The populace inhabit an area of only 38.55 square kilometers, making Manila the most densely populated city in the world.Metro Manila is the most populous metropolitan area in the Philippines and the 11th in the world with an estimated population of 16,300,000. The greater urban area is the fifth-most populous in the world and has an estimated metropolitan population of 20,654,307 people.
The city is divided into six legislative districts and consists of sixteen geographical districts: Binondo, Ermita, Intramuros, Malate, Paco, Pandacan, Port Area, Quiapo, Sampaloc, San Andres, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Santa Mesa and Tondo. Bustling commerce and some of the most historically and culturally significant iconic landmarks in the country, as well as the seat of the executive and judicial branches of the government are to be found in the city; and it is also home to many scientific and educational institutions, numerous sport facilities, a variety of other culturally and historically significant venues. As a primary transportation hub and with the larger capital region bearing its name, there is very little of a general nature to be found in cities anywhere that Manila is lacking.

Metropolitan Manila (Filipino: Kalakhang Maynila, Kamaynilaan), the National Capital Region (NCR) (Filipino: Pambansang Punong Rehiyon), or simply Metro Manila, is the metropolitan region encompassing the City of Manila and its surrounding areas in the Philippines. It is composed of 16 cities, namely City of Manila, Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasay, Pasig, Parañaque, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, and Valenzuela, plus the smaller Municipality of Pateros.
The region is the political, economic, social, cultural, and educational center of the Philippines. As proclaimed by Presidential Decree No. 940, Metro Manila as a whole is the Philippines' seat of government but the City of Manila is the capital. The largest city in the metropolis is Quezon City, while the largest business district is the Makati Central Business District.
Metro Manila is the most populous of the twelve defined metropolitan areas in the Philippines and the 11th most populous in the world. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 11,855,975, comprising 13% of the national population. The sum total population of provinces with a provincial density above 700 people per square kilometer (more than double the national average) in a contiguous zone with Metro Manila is 25.5 million people as of the 2007 census, one way to refer to the conurbation around Metro Manila is Greater Manila.

Mark Kermode (born 2 July 1963) is an English film critic, musician and a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. He contributes to Sight and Sound magazine, The Observer newspaper and BBC Radio 5 Live, where he presents Kermode and Mayo's Film Reviews with Simon Mayo on Friday afternoons. He also co-presents the BBC Two arts programme The Culture Show and discusses other branches of the arts for the BBC Two programme Newsnight Review. Kermode writes and presents a film-related video blog for the BBC.
Kermode, born Mark Fairey in Barnet, North London, England, attended Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, an independent boys' school in Elstree, a few years ahead of comedians Sacha Baron Cohen, Matt Lucas and David Baddiel and in the same year as actor Jason Isaacs. He was raised as a Methodist, and is now a member of the Church of England.
Mark Fairey's parents divorced when he was in his early 20s and he subsequently changed his surname to his GP mother's maiden name by deed poll. (Neither of them is related to the literary critic Frank Kermode.)

Metro Manila (2013)
Plot
Seeking a brighter future in megacity Manila, Oscar Ramirez and his family flee their impoverished life in the rice fields of the northern Philippines. But the sweltering capital's bustling intensity quickly overwhelms them, and they fall prey to the rampant manipulations of its hardened locals. Oscar catches a lucky break when he's offered steady work for an armored truck company and gregarious senior officer Ong takes him under his wing. Soon, though, the reality of his work's mortality rate and the murky motives of his new partner force Oscar to confront the perils he faces in his new job and life.

Learn how to ride the local train and other transportation options in Manila.
You do not need to rent a car when going around MetroManila because there is a lot of transport. You can take the bus, taxi, jeepney, train, or even a horse carriage. I am going to the city of Manila, so I am taking the LRT, which is my fastest transport option.
There are two elevated railway systems in MetroManila, the MIT and the LRT. The LRT travels in a single line and passes through the city of Manila, so you will not have any problems getting to your destinations. Another option is the MIT. It passes through Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City. I am going to Central Station, and I am buying my ticket. I am waiting for the train, which arrives in fifteen-minute intervals. Here is the train now.
Be sure to have your ticket with you at all times; otherwise, you will not get out of the station. You do not have to call by telephone to get a taxi because they are practically everywhere. When riding a taxi, make sure the meter is on and working. Colorful jeepneys ply through most places and are good for short distances. Here are a few customs and etiquette to be aware of during your visit to the Phillipines. Filipinos value honor. The concept of hiya or shame requires one to behave in a manner that will not shame the person or the family. Handshake is common when meeting someone. If elders are present, acknowledge them first. Address people formally indicating their profession or using their last names. In discussions Filipinos tend to be non-confrontational. People will not directly say no.
In making appointments, Filipinos tend to be more forgiving. If you arrive 15 to 20 minutes late, unless you are attending a business function. If you ever receive a gift, open it afterwards, not in front of the person who gave it to you. When it comes to tipping, 10 percent of the bill is typical in most situations, unless it is already included. In that case you can give a small change. I joined some local "pinays" and did some street food hawking around the Manila downtown area. I tried bbq chicken intestine, fondly called "isaw" straight up from the grill, fried chicken balls, and the much too popular "balut" or the boiled duck egg complete with its embryo, which according to these locals is a good source of protein and serves as aphrodisiac for men.
Sumali ako ng ilang lokal na "pinays" at ginawang ilang hawking pagkain kalye sa paligid ng downtown area ng Manila. Sinubukan kong BBQ manok bituka, pakarinyo na tinatawag na "isaw" straight up mula sa grill, pinirito sa bola manok, at ang magkano masyadong sikat na "balut" o ang pinakuluang itlog pato kumpleto sa embrayo nito, na alinsunod sa mga lokal ay isang mahusay na mapagkukunan ng protina at nagsisilbing pampalibog para sa mga kalalakihan.

Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.

Manila, Philippines Travel Guide - Medieval Intramuros

Take a tour of the medieval fortified city.
Intramuros, in Philippine colonial history, was the original Manila. The Spaniards first landed here in 1571 and conquered this area, that was once a center of trade for Asian goods. It will take you an entire day, or longer, to discover Intramuros.
Intramuros, which means inside the walls, used to be the political, cultural and commercial center of the Spaniards in the East. To ward off invaders, the Spaniards built the wall to protect the area. Intramuros housed Fort Santiago, the headquarters for colonizers from the Spaniards, the Americas, the Japanese, until the Philippine Independence in 1946.
The Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was incarcerated in Fort Santiago. And in his prison cell he wrote his famous poem, Mi último Adiós, before being executed by musketry. Intramuros, in Philippine colonial history, was the original Manila. The Spaniards first landed here in 1571 and conquered this area, that was once a center of trade for Asian goods. It will take you an entire day, or longer, to discover Intramuros.
Intramuros, which means inside the walls, used to be the political, cultural and commercial center of the Spaniards in the East. To ward off invaders, the Spaniards built the wall to protect the area. Intramuros housed Fort Santiago, the headquarters for colonizers from the Spaniards, the Americas, the Japanese, until the Philippine Independence in 1946.
The Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was incarcerated in Fort Santiago. And in his prison cell he wrote his famous poem, Mi último Adiós, before being executed by musketry. I am at McCarthy Avenue at the heart of a huge business district in metro Manilla. This is where Ayala Museum is located, a private collection that provides a glimpse of Philippine art and history. The museum opened in 1974 and was the brainchild of artist Fernando Zobel. I am here with Ms. Nita Samson, a curator at the Ayala Museum.
Ms. Samson, what is unique about this museum? What makes Ayala Museum unique is that it is both a history and an art museum. Our historical dioramas and boat gallery are proven crowd drawers.
The main attraction here is a diorama of Philippine history created by artists from Paete, Laguna. Another popular attraction is the boat gallery that showcases maritime trade and colonial economy. As we go up the third and fourth levels, pioneers of Philippine art Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, and Fernando Zobel are showcased.
You can buy souvenirs here at the museum shop and every purchase you make helps support the educational programs of the museum. When you visit here, allot two hours to explore the whole museum. Not knowing very much about the Philippines before I visited, I was pleasantly surprised by Manila and Subic and how they both reminded me of America. The highlight of the trip was getting a chance to visit a Vietnamese boat people refugee camp near Baataan. I met some friendly Pinoys too. The food was great. The transportation readily available. Learn how to ride the local train and other transportation options in Manila. You do not need to rent a car when going around MetroManila because there is a lot of transport. You can take the bus, taxi, jeepney, train, or even a horse carriage. I am going to the city of Manila, so I am taking the LRT, which is my fastest transport option. There are two elevated railway systems in MetroManila, the MIT and the LRT. The LRT travels in a single line and passes through the city of Manila, so you will not have any problems getting to your destinations. Another option is the MIT. It passes through Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City. I am going to Central Station, and I am buying my ticket. I am waiting for the train, which arrives in fifteen-minute intervals. Here is the train now. Be sure to have your ticket with you at all times; otherwise, you will not get out of the station. You do not have to call by telephone to get a taxi because they are practically everywhere. When riding a taxi, make sure the meter is on and working. Colorful jeepneys ply through most places and are good for short distances. For a taste of local color, try riding the kalesas, which are available in some old neighborhoods in Manila. How to behave in social situations in Manila. Here are a few customs and etiquette to be aware of during your visit to the Phillipines. Filipinos value honor. The concept of hiya or shame requires one to behave in a manner that will not shame the person or the family. Handshake is common when meeting someone. If elders are present, acknowledge them first. Address people formally indicating their profession or using their last names. In discussions Filipinos tend to be non-confrontational. People will not directly say no. In making appointments, Filipinos tend to be more forgiving. If you arrive 15 to 20 minutes late, unless you are attending a business function. If you ever receive a gift, open it afterwards, not in front of the person who gave it to you. When it comes to tipping, 10 percent of the bill is typical in most situations, unless it is already included. In that case you can give a small change. Most of all, Filipinos try their best to be hospitable. When visiting their homes you may be invited to a meal even if it was not planned. I joined some local "pinays" and did some street food hawking around the Manila downtown area. I tried bbq chicken intestine, fondly called "isaw" straight up from the grill, fried chicken balls, and the much too popular "balut" or the boiled duck egg complete with its embryo, which according to these locals is a good source of protein and serves as aphrodisiac for men. Sumali ako ng ilang lokal na "pinays" at ginawang ilang hawking pagkain kalye sa paligid ng downtown area ng Manila. Makati is a popular tourist district, commercial and business area. Plenty of shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Regarding the street people in Makati Manila, I bought many of them rice and stir fry dinners and bottled water. I interviewed a few of them off camera and they all confirmed they had come to that area for the holiday and tourist season to try beg for money from foreigners. They were there by choice, and went back to their provinces after new years. Travel Tips: Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly. Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask. Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi! Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat. Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price. "Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip. The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine. Manila, Philippines Travel Guide - Medieval Intramuros
Take a tour of the medieval fortified city. Intramuros, in Philippine colonial history, was the original Manila. The Spaniards first landed here in 1571 and conquered this area, that was once a center of trade for Asian goods. It will take you an entire day, or longer, to discover Intramuros. Intramuros, which means inside the walls, used to be the political, cultural and commercial center of the Spaniards in the East. To ward off invaders, the Spaniards built the wall to protect the area. Intramuros housed Fort Santiago, the headquarters for colonizers from the Spaniards, the Americas, the Japanese, until the Philippine Independence in 1946. The Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was incarcerated in Fort Santiago. And in his prison cell he wrote his famous poem, Mi último Adiós, before being executed by musketry. Shelling in 1945 destroyed the city beyond recognition. However, bit by bit, Intramuros was reconstructed and has recaptured its historic past. This is Baluarte de San Diego, the oldest fortification in Intramuros. Now it is favorite spot among students and visitors. There are several schools inside Intramuros, including Letran, which was established in 1620. The present Manila Cathedral, built in 1954, resembled the old design and captured the beauty of the old churches in Intramuros. The Palcio del gobernador actually sits in the original spot of the old Spanish government building.
