The Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the Olympiad are an international multi-sport event, occurring every four years, organized by the International Olympic Committee. Medals are awarded in each event, with gold medals for first place, silver for second and bronze for third, a tradition that started in 1904. The Winter Olympics were also created due to the success of the summer Olympics.
The olympics have increased from a 42-event competition with fewer than 250 male athletes to a 300-event sporting celebration with over 10,000 competitors from 205 nations. Organizers for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing expected approximately 10,500 athletes to take part in the 302 events on the program for the games.
The United States has hosted four Summer Olympics Games, more than any other nation. The United Kingdom will have hosted three Summer Olympics Games when they return to the British capital in 2012, all of them have been (and will be) in London, making it the first city to hold the Summer Olympic Games three times. Australia, France, Germany and Greece have all hosted the Summer Olympic Games twice. Other countries that have hosted the summer Olympics are Belgium, China, Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, the Soviet Union and Sweden. In the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio de Janeiro will host the first Summer Games in South America. Four cities have hosted two Summer Olympic Games: Los Angeles, London, Paris and Athens. Stockholm, Sweden, has hosted events at two Summer Olympic Games, having hosted the games in 1912 and the equestrian events at the 1956 Summer Olympics—which they are usually listed as jointly hosting. Events at the summer Olympics have also been held in Hong Kong and the Netherlands (both represented by their own NOCs), with the equestrian events at the 2008 Summer Olympics being held in Hong Kong and two sailing races at the 1920 Summer Olympics being held in the Netherlands.

I'm not sure why, but these versions have a sort of sophisticated and serious, but almost sombre sound, rather than the loud and typical in your face military march style it usually is.

I'm not sure why, but these versions have a sort of sophisticated and serious, but almost sombre sound, rather than the loud and typical in your face military march style it usually is.

The Rio–Antirio bridge (Greek: Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου), officially the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge after the statesman who first envisaged it, is one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese peninsula to Antirrio on mainland Greece by road.
The bridge was planned in the mid-1990s and was built by a French-Greek consortium led by the French group VINCI, and which includes the Greek companies Hellenic Technodomiki-TEV, J&P-Avax;, Athena, Proodeftiki and Pantechniki. The consortium operates the bridge under concession under its Γ.Ε.Φ.Υ.Ρ.Α. or ΓαλλοΕλληνικός Φορέας Υπερθαλάσσιας ζεύξης Ρίου- Αντιρίου (G.E.F.Y.R.A., Greek for "bridge", French-Greek Carrier of Oversea Connection of Rio–Antirrio) subsidiary. The lead architect was Berdj Mikaelian. Site preparation and dredging began in July 1998, and construction of the massive supporting pylons in 2000. With these complete in 2003, work began on the traffic decks with the steel fabrication being carried out by Cleveland Bridge U.K. and supporting cables by Freyssinet. On May 21, 2004, the main construction was completed; only equipment (sidewalks, railings, etc.) and waterproofing remained to be installed.
The bridge was finally inaugurated on August 7, 2004, a week before the opening of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Olympic torchbearers were the first to officially cross its length. One of them was Otto Rehhagel, the German football coach who won the Euro 2004 Championships for Greece. Another was Costas Laliotis, the former Minister of Public Works during whose term the project had begun.
The total cost of the bridge was about € 630,000,000,[2] funded by Greek state funds, the consortium and loans by the European Investment Bank. It was finished ahead of its original schedule, which had foreseen completion between September and November 2004, and within budget.

Star Spangled Banner - Athens 2004 Summer Olympics
U.S. anthem at the 2004 Olympics. I posted this because this version sounds very similar to the 2008 version. In fact, the Chinese apparently copied this version to use at Beijing.

Usually I don't like my countries anthem very much, but this version and the 2008 version make it my favorite anthem.

Oh Sport! You Are Peace! 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics Official Film, 1981: Moscow, U.S.S.R.
"Oh Sport, You Are Peace!" is the official film of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics distributed by Mosfilm. Yuri Ozerov, director; Alexandra Pakhmutova, music; Nicholai Dobronravov, script. 1981: Mosfilm, Moscow, U.S.S.R.
O, Sport, You - the Peace (Oh, Sport - You Are Peace!)! (Russian: О спорт, ты - мир! transliterated as O sport, ty - mir!) was a 1981 documentary film directed by Yuri Ozerov. Alexandra Pahkmutova was the composer, and her husband, poet Nicholai Dobronravov, provided the script. (Wikipedia)
In addition to showing many Gold medal performances, this film shows the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow.
The director was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1982.
This film was recently digitized and made publicly available, thankfully. This film was shown throughout the USSR in 1981, but was lost to posterity, until now.
