This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. “Water is life!” and “water is the new gold” that’s what many experts across the world are saying now, so Kala’s water project is of critical importance, as she leads a team of IBM scientists who are developing what they call a “digital aquifer,” a system for mapping and analyzing the status of underground water supplies. “Water is life!” and “Water is the new gold” that’s what many experts across the world are saying now, so Kala’s water project is of critical importance, as she leads a team of IBM scientists who are developing what they call a “digital aquifer,” a system for mapping and analyzing the status of underground water supplies. This is an important problem for Kenya where 80% of the country is arid or semi arid (ASALs), so many farmers depend primarily on rainfall to water their crops, because there’s little irrigation available. That makes ground water an important element of the water supply. It is often the last line of defense against farm crop failure. Yet little data has been collected to assess the health of aquifers so they can be used in the most effective ways. Administration, Campbell Soup and American Water provide the deep cross-sector insights that she leverages to drive innovation in her current role.
