Deshpande (Marathi: देशपांडे)(Kannada: ದೇಶಪಾಂಡೆ)is one of the most famous Brahmin surnames in the state of Maharashtra and North Karnataka. Deshpande was the revenue post created by the King Krishnadevrai of Devgiri (Daulatabad). One Deshpande used to be appointed superior to about 10 Pandes. More than 96% of Deshpandes belong to the Deshastha Brahmin community.[citation needed] Some Goud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB), Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu (CKP), Smarth Brahmin families also have this surname.
Deshpande derives from the Marathi title dešpande, or "district accountant". Dešpande was formerly a hereditary office, and is ultimately derived from the Sanskrit terms deśa ("country", or "district") and pandita ("learned man").
Rahul Deshpande (Marathi: राहुल देशपांडे, born 10 Oct. 1979) is an Indian classical music singer and actor from Pune, India. He is the grandson of the well-known late Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande of Patiala Gharana.
A revised version of Kakasaheb Khadilkar's Sangeet Maanapmaan played in Maharashtra in 2011-2012, the centenary year of the play's first performance. It has been revised by Rahul Deshpande. "Originally, the play has five parts with around 52 classical songs. Deshpande's version will have two parts and 22 classical songs."
Vasantrao Deshpande (Marathi: वसंतराव देशपांडे) (1920–1983) was a renowned Hindustani classical vocalist who was also a performer of Natya Sangeet.
Vasantrao Deshpande was born in Murtijapur, District Akola, which belongs to Vidarbha region of State of Maharasthra, in India.
He learned from several gurus, refusing to tie himself down to a single school of singing. His more famous gurus were Shankarrao Sapre of Nagpur, Sureshbabu Mane, Aman Ali Khan of Bhendibazaar gharana, and Ramkrishnabuwa Vaze. But the most important influence on him was Dinanath Mangeshkar, and Vasantrao was the sole true inheritor of Dinanath's mercurial style of singing. At the age of 8, Bhalji Pendharkar perceived his musical talent and launched him in the role of 'Krishna' in Hindi movie 'Kaliyamardan'.
One of India's most illustrious classical vocalists, he performed classical and semi-classical music. In the raga form which constitutes classical music, the artist displays his creativity on a basic canvas. Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande's rendition of famous ragas like Marwa, Salag Waraali, Nat Bhairav, Kauns (in its various forms), Chhayanat, Basant Mukhari, Patamanjari, Jaijaiwanti, Janasammohini, Bhoop, Shree, Kalavati, Maru Bihag, and Yaman had a quality to them that kept people interested. His performance of offbeat ragas was not too different. The sargam was his forte. He was also an accomplished tabala and harmonium player.

Anand Bhate (born 1971) is a Hindustani classical vocalist from the Kirana Gharana. He is popular for his classical singing of songs from the Marathi film Balgandharva (2011).
Anand Bhate was born in Pune, India in 1971, in a family active in classical music. He inherited the singing tradition from his great grandfather Bhate Buva, who was a well known vocalist for Thumri and Natya Sangeet in the 19th century. By the age of 10, he had started systematic training in classical singing from Chandrashekhar Deshpande. He began his training under Yashwantbua Marathe, who introduced him to some of the intricacies of Khayal gayaki. Later he became a disciple of late Bhimsen Joshi, with whom he trained for 15 years.
His first public appearance came in 1981, when he performed Balgandharva's gayaki on All India Radio, Doordarshan and had a tour in the USA. It was a series of successful performances that fetched him the title "Anand Gandharva".
He has recently sung all the tracks for the lead character of a Marathi bio-pic of Balgandharva. He received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for this film.
