The True Story of How a Rookie Coach Johnny Carter Took a Newly Integrated Team to a Texas State Championship The First Season book by author Coach Johnny Carter brings back many memories of my playing days in the 1950s and of the people and teachers who helped shape and form who I am today. Coach Johnny Carter was born and raised in Madisonville, Texas, and graduated from Madisonville High School in 1961. After an excellent basketball career at Madisonville, he went to Lon Morris Junior College on a scholarship. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and finished his master's degree at Sam Houston State University. Coach Carter's first coaching job was at Kennard High School in 1967. In four years there, his teams compiled a record of 160—13, winning three State Championships in 1967, 1968, and 1970. The 1968 Kennard Tigers set three Texas State Tournament scoring records, the last of which—most points scored in a three-game series—still stands. Carter served at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, as an assistant coach for three years. They were the Lone Star Conference Tri Champions in 1971 and played in the National AAU Tournament. Carter was head coach at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, for seven years, finishing second in the conference in his first season in 1974. Thereafter, his teams won six consecutive conference championships. They qualified for the Regional Tournament every year, reaching the National Junior College Tournament in 1976. He was voted Junior College Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches that season. In 1980, his team was the winner of the highest scoring game in the history of basketball: 169—165 against Kilgore. The game ball is in the trophy case at the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. He coached two players at MCC who went on to the NBA: Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson and Sam Worthen. Vinnie, the seventh player taken in the draft, played on two NBA championship teams for the Detroit Pistons in 1989 and 1990. Sam is on the coaching staff with the Harlem Globetrotters. Coach Carter was an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma for two years, reaching the NIT Final Four in 1982. Carter was head coach for twenty-two years at Madisonville High School and had sixteen playoff teams—in 1995, he reached the State finals. Throughout his career, Carter's teams were known for their aggressive full-court pressure defense, which he used every year after that memorable first season. His teams compiled an overall record of 903 wins and 241 losses. Several of Coach Carter's players went on to have outstanding coaching careers. Among those are Danny Kaspar, Tony Mauldin, Eddie Nelson, and Randy Weisinger. Carter is married to his wife of fifteen years, Sallie, and they have three children: Candice, Ben, and John Reid. http://www.coachjohnnycarter.com/

Julius "Dr. J" Erving- Induction into the Hall of Fame Julius Dr. J Erving- Hall of Fame Induction Julius Winfield Erving II (born February 22, 1950), commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, is a retired American basketball player who helped launch a modern style of play that emphasizes leaping and play above the rim. Erving helped legitimize the American Basketball Association (ABA), and was the best-known player in that league when it merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the 1975–76 season. Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles with the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets (now the NBA's Brooklyn Nets) and the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. He is the fifth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined). He was well known for slam dunking from the free throw line in Slam Dunk Contests and was the only player voted Most Valuable Player in both the American Basketball Association and the National Basketball Association. Erving was inducted in 1993 into the Basketball Hall of Fame and was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team. In 1994, Erving was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time. In 2004, he was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. Most observers[who?] consider him one of history's most talented players; he is also widely acknowledged[by whom?] as one of the game's best dunkers. While Connie Hawkins, "Jumping" Johnny Green, Elgin Baylor, Jim Pollard and Gus Johnson performed spectacular dunks before Erving's time, "Dr. J" brought the practice into the mainstream.[6] His signature dunk was the "slam" dunk, since incorporated into the vernacular and basic skill set of the game in the same manner as the "cross-over" dribble and the "no look" pass. Before Julius Erving, dunking was a practice most commonly used by the big men (usually standing close to the hoop) to show their brutal strength which was seen as style over substance, even unsportsmanlike, by many purists of the game.[citation needed] However, the way Erving utilized the dunk more as a high-percentage shot made at the end of maneuvers generally starting well away from the basket and not necessarily a "show of force" helped to make the shot an acceptable strategy, especially in trying to avoid a blocked shot.[citation needed] Although the slam dunk is still widely used as a show of power, a method of intimidation and a way to fire up a team (and spectators), Dr. J demonstrated that there can be great artistry, and almost balletic style, to slamming the ball into the hoop, particularly after a launch several feet from that target.

ABC News 2015-04-06The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States, honors exceptional basketball players, coaches, referees, executives, and other major contributors to the game of basketball worldwide. The Basketball Hall of Fame was first incorporated in 1959 at Springfield College—the institution where James Naismith invented the sport in 1891—and in that year, the hall inducted its first class of members.
Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Basketball Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving and promoting basketball at all levels and also serving as the ultimate library of the sport's history. To date, the Basketball Hall of Fame has honored 305 individuals and eight teams.
The Naismith Hall of Fame was established in 1959 by Lee Williams, a former athletic director at Colby College. In the 1960s, the Basketball Hall of Fame struggled to raise enough money for the construction of its first facility. However, during the following half a decade, the necessary amount was raised and the building opened on Feb. 17, 1968, less than one month after the National Basketball Association played its 18th All-Star Game. The Basketball Hall of Fame's Board named four inductees in its first year. In addition to honoring those who contributed to basketball, the Hall of Fame sought to make contributions of its own. In 1979, the Hall of Fame sponsored the Tip-Off Classic, a pre-season college basketball exhibition. This Tip-Off Classic has been the start to the college basketball season ever since - and although it does not always take place in Springfield, Massachusetts, generally it returns every few years.
A hall of fame, wall of fame, walk of fame, walk of stars or avenue of stars is a type of attraction established for any field of endeavor to honor individuals of noteworthy achievement in that field. The meaning of "Fame" has changed over the years, originally meaning "renown" as opposed to today's more common meaning of "celebrity".
In some cases, these halls of fame consist of actual halls or museums which enshrine the honorees with sculptures, plaques, and displays of memorabilia. Sometimes, the honorees' plaques may instead be posted on a wall (a '"wall of fame") or inscribed on a sidewalk (a "walk of fame" or an "avenue of fame"). In others, the hall of fame is more figurative, and just simply consists of a list of names of noteworthy individuals maintained by an organization or community.
The English-language term was first used for the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at Bronx Community College, in New York City, although its inspiration, the Ruhmeshalle in Munich, Germany, also means "Hall of Fame". The Walhalla Temple in Bavaria, Germany, is an even earlier hall of fame, conceived in 1807 and built between 1830 and 1842.
Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player, active entrepreneur, and majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. His biography on the National Basketball Association (NBA) website states, "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Jordan was one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was considered instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.
After a three-season career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Tar Heels' national championship team in 1982, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as a league star, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness". He also gained a reputation for being one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". Although Jordan abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993–94 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 NBA season. Jordan retired for a second time in 1999, but returned for two more NBA seasons from 2001 to 2003 as a member of the Washington Wizards.
