A nuclear reactor is a device to initiate and control a sustained nuclear chain reaction. Most commonly they are used for generating electricity and for the propulsion of ships. Usually heat from nuclear fission is passed to a working fluid (water or gas), which runs through turbines that power either ship's propellers or generators. Some produce isotopes for medical and industrial use, and some are run only for research.
Just as conventional power stations generate electricity by harnessing the thermal energy released from burning fossil fuels, nuclear reactors convert the thermal energy released from nuclear fission.
When a large fissile atomic nucleus such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239 absorbs a neutron, it may undergo nuclear fission. The heavy nucleus splits into two or more lighter nuclei (the fission products), releasing kinetic energy, gamma radiation and free neutrons. A portion of these neutrons may later be absorbed by other fissile atoms and trigger further fission events, which release more neutrons, and so on. This is known as a nuclear chain reaction.

Extensive research into molten salt reactors started with the U.S. aircraft reactor experiment (ARE) in support of the U.S. Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion program. The ARE was a 2.5 MWth nuclear reactor experiment designed to attain a high power density for use as an engine in a nuclear-powered bomber. The project included several reactor experiments including high temperature reactor and engine tests collectively called the Heat Transfer Reactor Experiments: HTRE-1, HTRE-2 and HTRE-3 at the National Reactor Test Station (now Idaho National Laboratory) as well as an experimental high-temperature molten salt reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory - the ARE. The ARE used molten fluoride salt NaF-ZrF4-UF4 (53-41-6 mol%) as fuel, was moderated by beryllium oxide (BeO), used liquid sodium as a secondary coolant and had a peak temperature of 860 °C. It operated for 100 MW-hours over nine days in 1954.

The SL-1, or Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One, was a United States Army experimental nuclear power reactor which underwent a steam explosion and meltdown on January 3, 1961, killing its three operators. The direct cause was the improper withdrawal of the central control rod, responsible for absorbing neutrons in the reactor core. The event is the only known fatal reactor accident in the United States. The accident released about 80 curies (3.0 TBq) of Iodine-131, which was not considered significant due to its location in a remote desert of Idaho. About 1,100 curies (41 TBq) of fission products were released into the atmosphere.
The facility, located at the National Reactor Testing Station approximately 40 miles (64 km) west of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was part of the Army Nuclear Power Program and was known as the Argonne Low Power Reactor (ALPR) during its design and build phase. It was intended to provide electrical power and heat for small, remote military facilities, such as radar sites near the Arctic Circle, and those in the DEW Line. The design power was 3 MW (thermal). Operating power was 200 kW electrical and 400 kW thermal for space heating.
In the accident, the core power level reached nearly 20 GW in just four milliseconds, precipitating the reactor accident and steam explosion.

How do nuclear power plants work to generate the electricity supply? Leaving a lump of radioactive material on its own is not the solution as it breaks down and emits rays, not electrical charges. Other than endangering those in close proximity, this is obviously not the solution sought. When radioactive material breaks down, it is known as the fission process. When this happens, a tremendous amount of heat is released. To manage the heating process, water is used to control the temperature hike. As the water is heated, it is converted into steam. This is then pumped into a turbine which turns like a waterwheel placed atop a flowing river. Electricity is thus the final outcome and sent to a power grid or plant.
Although the above covers the gist of the matter, it is not as simple in actual fact. Many levels and mechanisms of control need to be implemented to ensure smooth and safe operations at all times. Since radioactive material is the mainstay of the process, careful control over its behavior is crucial. If too much heat is generated, there must be methods to slow down the fission process. This is normally done via control rods which are lowered into the core to absorb the neutrons. By pumping pressurized water into the reactor to cool it down, the process is also slowed down. Uncontrolled overheating can result in reactor meltdown, an unfortunate incident in the dark annals of history.

Now tapes of the inquiry into the accident, heard for the first time in a BBC film, reveal the reasons why the politicians covered up the causes of the accident. Scientists had been warning about the dangers of an accident for some time. The safety margins of the radioactive materials inside the reactor were being further and further eroded.
"They were running much too close to the precipice," says Dr Dunworth, a senior manager in the Nuclear Research Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire, who was one of those highlighting the potential dangers.
But the politicians and the military ignored the warnings; instead they increased demands on Windscale to produce material for an H-bomb.
For 50 years, the official record on the accident has been that the very men who had averted a potentially devastating accident were to blame for causing it.
"I resented it at the time," says Peter Jenkinson, who was an assistant physicist at the reactor, "and I hoped the record would be put straight." After the inquiry, he and his colleagues finally got their wish.

The Halden Reactor[1] is a 25MW nuclear reactor located in Halden, Norway and dedicated for research. The reactor became operative in 1958, and is operated by the Institute for Energy Technology. The reactor is a Boiling water reactor (BWR) moderated by heavy water.[2] The reactor is used for safety-focussed research into materials, fuel burnup, and fuel behaviour in prolonged operating conditions in co-operation with organizations from 19 countries.[3] - Its current operating license expires at the end of 2014.[4] Authorities are considering whether to extend the operating license beyond 2014. In May 2014, the Norwegian Radiological Protection Authority recommended a ten-year license extension.[5]

The Halden Reactor[1] is a 25MW nuclear reactor located in Halden, Norway and dedicated for research. The reactor became operative in 1958, and is operated by the Institute for Energy Technology. Tokyo Electric Power Company says it will release all radiation data taken at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to improve information disclosure.
TEPCO made the announcement on Monday after mounting criticism about its handling of tainted rainwater leaking into the sea.
Its workers had been aware since April last year that radiation levels in a drainage channel at the No.2 reactor building rose every time it rained. But it did not make the problem public for months.
The workers were worried that it might impact talks with local farmers about a plan to discharge treated groundwater into the sea.
TEPCO will name an executive officer posted to the plant who is responsible for communicating information to the public.
President Naomi Hirose said his company will implement measures that take into account the public's viewpoint.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it will release all radiation data taken at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to improve information disclosure.
TEPCO made the announcement on Monday after mounting criticism about its handling of tainted rainwater leaking into the sea.
Its workers had been aware since April last year that radiation levels in a drainage channel at the No.2 reactor building rose every time it rained. But it did not make the problem public for months.
The workers were worried that it might impact talks with local farmers about a plan to discharge treated groundwater into the sea.
TEPCO will name an executive officer posted to the plant who is responsible for communicating information to the public.
President Naomi Hirose said his company will implement measures that take into account the public's viewpoint.

Nuclear regulators in Japan have begun examining a power plant in southwestern Japan. They want to see whether it can return online under new regulations introduced after the 2011 Fukushima accident.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority began inspections of the No.1 reactor at the Sendai plant in Kagoshima Prefecture on Monday.

A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. As is typical in all conventional thermal power stations the heat is used to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to an electric generator which produces electricity.
Nuclear power plants are usually considered to be base load stations, since fuel is a small part of the cost of production.
The conversion to electrical energy takes place indirectly, as in conventional thermal power plants. The heat is produced by fission in a nuclear reactor (a light water reactor). Directly or indirectly, water vapor (steam) is produced. The pressurized steam is then usually fed to a multi-stage steam turbine. Steam turbines in Western nuclear power plants are among the largest steam turbines ever. After the steam turbine has expanded and partially condensed the steam, the remaining vapor is condensed in a condenser. The condenser is a heat exchanger which is connected to a secondary side such as a river or a cooling tower. The water is then pumped back into the nuclear reactor and the cycle begins again. The water-steam cycle corresponds to the Rankine cycle.

Documentary Films: The History of Nuclear Power How do nuclear power plants work to ensure absolute safety? To answer this question constantly tossed up in environmental forums, it may be best to understand what goes behind doors of a nuclear power plant. In many developing nations, nuclear energy is a major source of electricity as it claims to be safe whilst producing sufficient levels to meet their needs. Since coal and oil are considered depleting resources, the drive to explore nuclear energy as an alternative source is more evident than ever. The mere mention of a nuclear power plant normally draws mixed reactions. Perhaps due to historical events which are still rearing ugly heads, pun intended, in this current day and age, many may be hesitant to support the building of one in their neighborhood. Whether it is the fear of seeing over-sized farm animals, glow-in-the-dark residents or setting off Geiger meters, nuclear energy is becoming more of a reality. To put fluttering hearts at ease, strict rules and procedures are imposed in the running of a nuclear power plant. In ensuring safety within the plant as well as surrounding areas, it is considered to be a safer technology as compared to conventional methods. How do nuclear power plants work to generate the electricity supply? Leaving a lump of radioactive material on its own is not the solution as it breaks down and emits rays, not electrical charges. Other than endangering those in close proximity, this is obviously not the solution sought. When radioactive material breaks down, it is known as the fission process. When this happens, a tremendous amount of heat is released. To manage the heating process, water is used to control the temperature hike. As the water is heated, it is converted into steam. This is then pumped into a turbine which turns like a waterwheel placed atop a flowing river. Electricity is thus the final outcome and sent to a power grid or plant. Although the above covers the gist of the matter, it is not as simple in actual fact. Many levels and mechanisms of control need to be implemented to ensure smooth and safe operations at all times. Since radioactive material is the mainstay of the process, careful control over its behavior is crucial. If too much heat is generated, there must be methods to slow down the fission process. This is normally done via control rods which are lowered into the core to absorb the neutrons. By pumping pressurized water into the reactor to cool it down, the process is also slowed down. Uncontrolled overheating can result in reactor meltdown, an unfortunate incident in the dark annals of history.- published: 04 Aug 2014

Fifty years ago, on the night of 10 October 1957, Britain was on the brink of an unprecedented nuclear tragedy. A fire ripped through the radioactive materials in the core of Windscale, Britain's first nuclear reactor. Tom Tuohy, the deputy general manager at the site, led the team faced with dealing with a nightmare no-one had thought possible. "Mankind had never faced a situation like this; there's no-one to give you any advice," he said. Tuohy and his men were confronted by a terrifying dilemma. If they let the fire burn out, it could spread radioactivity over a large area of Britain. But if they put water on the reactor, they risked turning it into a nuclear bomb that could kill them all. Now tapes of the inquiry into the accident, heard for the first time in a BBC film, reveal the reasons why the politicians covered up the causes of the accident. Scientists had been warning about the dangers of an accident for some time. The safety margins of the radioactive materials inside the reactor were being further and further eroded. "They were running much too close to the precipice," says Dr Dunworth, a senior manager in the Nuclear Research Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire, who was one of those highlighting the potential dangers. But the politicians and the military ignored the warnings; instead they increased demands on Windscale to produce material for an H-bomb. For 50 years, the official record on the accident has been that the very men who had averted a potentially devastating accident were to blame for causing it. "I resented it at the time," says Peter Jenkinson, who was an assistant physicist at the reactor, "and I hoped the record would be put straight." After the inquiry, he and his colleagues finally got their wish. These safety issues in France could lead to even further delays in the construction and completion of the proposed £24.5bn Hinkley Point nuclear power plant. It has already been delayed by months as the government negotiated a contract for EDF to supply electricity at a guaranteed price for 35 years. The final decision on the project is expected in the coming months but is also delayed by Britain not having a fully functioning government - something which could be exacerbated if talks on forming a government drag on after the election. EDF and Areva added: "Teams are working to perform the additional tests as soon as possible, following approval by the French Nuclear Safety Authority on the test conditions, and to provide the safety authority with all the necessary information to demonstrate the safety and quality of the corresponding equipment." The reactor became the first to clear the new, tougher regulations last year together with another reactor at the plant. The regulators will check whether facilities and equipment newly introduced to improve safety have been installed as planned and function properly. The regulators plan to focus on about 500 of the new items that are designed to withstand a severe nuclear accident. The No.1 reactor has been offline since May 2011.
