Alborz Province (Persian: استان البرز, Ostan-e Alborz ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran, centered in Karaj.
Alborz Province was formed by division of Tehran Province into two provinces, after the Parliamentary approval on June 23, 2010, and was introduced as 31st province of Iran.
Situated northwest of Tehran, the Province of Alborz has 4 counties, Karaj, Savojbolagh, Taleghan and Nazarabad.Karaj is the seat of the province. Alborz Province is situated 20 km west of Tehran, at the foothills of the Alborz mountains, and is Iran's smallest province in area.

Alborz (
listen (help·info) Persian: البرز), also written as Alburz, Elburz or Elborz, is a mountain range in northern Iran stretching from the borders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in the northwest to the southern end of the Caspian Sea, and ending in the east at the borders of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The highest mountain in West Asia, Mount Damavand, Amol, Mazandaran is located in the range.
The Alborz mountain range forms a barrier between the south Caspian and the Qazvin-Tehran plateau. It is only 60–130 km wide and consists of sedimentary series dating from Upper Devonian to Oligocene, prevalently Jurassic limestone over a granite core. Its higher elevations, in the Elburz Range forest steppe ecoregion, are arid with few trees, but its northern slopes, in the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests ecoregion, are lush and forested.
Zoroastrians may identify the range with the dwelling place of the Peshyotan, and the Zoroastrian Ilm-e-Kshnoom sect identify Mount Davamand as the home of the Saheb-e-Dilan ('Masters of the Heart'). In his epic Shahnameh, the poet Ferdowsi speaks of the mountains "as though they lay in India." This could reflect older usage, for numerous high peaks were given the name and some even reflect it to this day, for example, Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus Mountains, and Mount Elbariz (Albariz, Jebal Barez) in the Kirman area above the Straits of Hormuz. As recently as the 19th century, a peak in the northernmost range in the Hindu Kush system, just south of Balkh, was recorded as Mount Elburz in British army maps. All these names reflect the same Iranian language compound, and share an identification as the legendary mountain Harā Bərəzaitī of the Avesta.

The first domestically manufactured locomotive has joined Iran’s national rail fleet in a ceremony attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior government officials.
During the ceremony in Karaj -- the capital of the north central province of Alborz, situated 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) west of Tehran -- on Tuesday, the first factory specialized for manufacturing the domestically developed Iran Safir locomotives came on stream, and the first Iran Safir locomotive joined the national Iranian rail fleet.
The main goal of the project is to produce locomotives to promote public transportation, raise the share of railways in Iran's total public transportation to 16 percent, and increase the fleet of active locomotives to 600 nationwide.

During the ceremony in Karaj -- the capital of the north central province of Alborz, situated 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) west of Tehran -- on Tuesday, the first factory specialized for manufacturing the domestically developed Iran Safir locomotives came on stream, and the first Iran Safir locomotive joined the national Iranian rail fleet.
The main goal of the project is to produce locomotives to promote public transportation, raise the share of railways in Iran's total public transportation to 16 percent, and increase the fleet of active locomotives to 600 nationwide.

A regional Belgian appeals court ruled that a consignment of antiquities, including more than 300 historical objects discovered in Iran some 50 years ago, must be returned to the Islamic Republic of Iran, overturning previous verdicts that were challenged by Iran’s diplomatic channels.
The appeals court of Belgium’s Liege ordered that the historical objects, which have been kept at a museum in the European country for decades, be given back to Iran, Mohsen Mohebbi محسن محبي, an official at Iran’s presidential office said.
The invaluable antiquities had been discovered in Khurvin, a rural area at Iran’s northern province of Alborz, about 50 years ago.
The historical objects, dating back to 2000 B.C., had been discovered by a French lady and were later smuggled out of Iran by a Belgian diplomat, according to the Iranian officials.
“The items transferred to Iran on December 26, 2014” Mohebbi said.

The meteor landed in Avaj in the province of Qazvin, Mohammad Ali Ahani, director of Qazvin Crisis Management Staff said, Mehr news agency reported July 31.
Also, there have been reports that some pieces of rock have hit areas in Eshtehard, Alborz Province, Arsalan Qasemi, governor of Boeen Zahra, county in Qazvin Province, said.
Another local governor of Takestan County, Qazvin Province, said that the area witnessed the passing of the meteor, but nowhere in the district under his supervision had been hit.

The landscape of Iran is diverse, providing a range of activities from hiking and skiing in the Alborz mountains, to beach holidays by the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. Over the next five years a number of tourism-friendly infrastructure projects will be undertaken on the Persian Gulf island of Kish, which at present attracts around 1m visitors per year, the majority of whom are Iranian.
Before the Iranian revolution, tourism was characterized by significant numbers of visitors traveling to Iran for its diverse attractions, boasting cultural splendours and a diverse and beautiful landscape suitable for a range of activities. Tourism declined dramatically during the Iran–Iraq War in the 1980s.
Since the Iranian revolution in 1979, the majority of foreign visitors to Iran have been religious pilgrims and businesspeople. Official figures do not distinguish between those travelling to Iran for business and those coming for pleasure, and they also include a large number of diaspora Iranians returning to visit their families in Iran or making pilgrimages to holy Shia sites near Mashhad and elsewhere. Domestic tourism in Iran is one of the largest in the world. Despite the international tensions, the government continues to project strong rises in visitor numbers and tourism revenue for the foreseeable future, and to talk of projects to build an additional 100 hotels, for example, to expand its currently limited stock. In 2011, the number of foreign tourists in Iran reached 3 million, contributing more than $2 billion to the national economy. The strong devaluation of the Iranian Rial since early 2012 is also a positive element for tourism in Iran.
