A view of the Great Central Railway in 2014. On a quiet Sunday I traveled with a friend to The GCR and took the opportunity to film the line as it is 'today'. Having viewed the line filmed by Colin Marsden a few years ago I thought this short film would make for an interesting comparison of "then & now". Starting at 'Loughborough' we head south towards 'Quorn and Woodhouse' where we alighted for sustenance at the Butler Henderson cafe bistro. While there we took a look around the yard at the good shed and new facilities. While there I managed to capture the dining train returning to Loughborough before we continued our trip south. Leaving 'Quorn' we travel towards 'Rothley' passing across Swithland reservoir and past the sidings. (they will be shown fully on our return trip in part 2) At 'Rothley' we again broke our journey to enjoy a cup of tea and the sunshine before continuing past the carriage and wagon shops towards 'Leicester North' (Formerly 'Belgrave & Birstall'). I will admit that I have removed the final couple of minutes of film from the journey as the line is in a cutting so the view is limited to nothing more than trees. However, In part 3 I repeat the journey in the observation saloon where it is possible to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape more in this final section than from the window of our coach in this video.

The National Space Centre is one of the United Kingdom's leading visitor attractions that is devoted to space science and astronomy. It is located in the city of Leicester, England, The centre arose from a partnership between the University of Leicester's Space Research Centre and local government agencies. The total construction cost was £52m, £26m of which came from a Millennium Commission grant, and the rest from private sector sponsors. It is run as an educational charity, and offers science workshops for school children of all ages. The Centre has on display the only known Soyuz spacecraft in Western Europe (in the United States, another Soyuz spacecraft is at the Smithsonian Institution as part of their Apollo-Soyuz Test Project display). The centre has six main galleries of exhibits and visitor activities covering space flight, astronomy and cosmology. The attraction also includes a Digistar 3 dome cinema and planetarium, a gift shop and a restaurant. The restaurant is situated beneath the two nozzles of the Blue Streak and PGM-17 Thor rockets.

Leicester (/lɛstər/ LESS-tər pronunciation (help·info)) is a city and unitary authority in the East Midlands of England, and the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest. In 2010, the population of the Leicester unitary authority was estimated at 306,600, the second highest in the region, whilst 441,213 people lived in the wider Leicester Urban Area in 2006, making Leicester the tenth most populous settlement in the United Kingdom and the UK's fourteenth largest urban area. It is the largest city in the East Midlands yet has the second largest urban area in the region behind Nottingham Urban Area. Eurostat's Larger Urban Zone listed the population of the area at 772,400 people as of 2004.
Ancient Roman pavements and baths remain in Leicester from its early settlement as Ratae Corieltauvorum, a Roman military outpost in a region inhabited by the Celtic Corieltauvi tribe. Following the demise of Roman society the early medieval Ratae Corieltauvorum is shrouded in obscurity, but when the settlement was captured by the Danes it became one of five fortified towns important to the Danelaw. The name "Leicester" is thought to derive from the words castra of the "Ligore", meaning camp of the dwellers on the (river) Legro. Leicester appears in the Domesday Book as "Ledecestre". Leicester continued to grow throughout the Early Modern period as a market town, although it was the Industrial Revolution that facilitated a process of rapid unplanned urbanisation in the area.
The University of Leicester (i/ˈlɛstə/ LES-tər) is a research-led university based in Leicester, England. The main campus is a mile south of the city centre, adjacent to Victoria Park and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College.
The university has established itself as a leading research-led university and has been named University of the Year of 2008 by the Times Higher Education. The university has consistently ranked amongst the top 15 universities in the United Kingdom by the Times Good University Guide and The Guardian; it has a vision of becoming an established top ten UK university by 2015. The university was ranked third behind Oxford and Cambridge in the 2011 National Student Survey of 120 mainstream universities in the UK.[citation needed] Research by THE and Opinion Panel published in 2011 rated Leicester third best in England for the quality of lecturing staff.[citation needed]
The University was founded as Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921. The site for the University was donated by a local textile manufacturer, Thomas Fielding Johnson, in order to create a living memorial for those who lost their lives in First World War. This is reflected in the University's motto Ut Vitam Habeant – 'so that they may have life'. The central building, now known as the Fielding Johnson Building and housing the University's administration offices and Faculty of Law, dates from 1837 and was formerly the Leicestershire and Rutland Lunatic Asylum.
