The nuclear arms race was a competition for supremacy in nuclear warfare between the United States, the Soviet Union, and their respective allies during the Cold War. During the Cold War, in addition to the American and Soviet nuclear stockpiles, other countries developed nuclear weapons, though none engaged in warhead production on nearly the same scale as the two superpowers.
The first nuclear weapon was created by U.S. during the Second World War and was developed to be used against the Axis powers. Scientists of the Soviet Union were aware of the potential of nuclear weapons and had also been conducting research on the field.
The Soviet Union was not informed officially of the Manhattan Project until Stalin was briefed at the Potsdam Conference on July 24, 1945, by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, eight days after the first successful test of a nuclear weapon. Despite their wartime military alliance, the United States and Britain had not trusted the Soviets enough to keep knowledge of the Manhattan Project safe from German spies: there were also concerns that, as an ally, the Soviet Union would request and expect to receive technical details of the new weapon.
A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission and fusion. Both reactions release vast quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter. The first fission ("atomic") bomb test released the same amount of energy as approximately 20,000 tons of TNT. The first thermonuclear ("hydrogen") bomb test released the same amount of energy as approximately 10,000,000 tons of TNT.
A modern thermonuclear weapon weighing little more than 2,400 pounds (1,100 kg) can produce an explosive force comparable to the detonation of more than 1.2 million tons (1.1 million tonnes) of TNT. Thus, even a small nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire and radiation. Nuclear weapons are considered weapons of mass destruction, and their use and control have been a major focus of international relations policy since their debut.
Only two nuclear weapons have been used in the course of warfare, both by the United States near the end of World War II. On 6 August 1945, a uranium gun-type device code-named "Little Boy" was detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, on 9 August, a plutonium implosion-type device code-named "Fat Man" was exploded over Nagasaki, Japan. These two bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 Japanese people—mostly civilians—from acute injuries sustained from the explosions. The role of the bombings in Japan's surrender, and their ethical status, remain the subject of scholarly and popular debate.
Carl Edward Sagan ( /ˈseɪɡɪn/; November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and natural sciences. He published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He advocated scientifically skeptical inquiry and the scientific method, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
Sagan is known for his popular science books and for the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which he narrated and co-wrote. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. Sagan wrote the novel Contact, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name.
Carl Sagan was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Ukrainian Jewish family. His father, Sam Sagan, was an immigrant garment worker from Kamenets-Podolsk, Ukraine; his mother, Rachel Molly Gruber, a housewife. Carl was named in honor of Rachel's biological mother, Chaiya Clara, in Sagan's words, "the mother she never knew." Sagan graduated from Rahway High School in Rahway, New Jersey, in 1951.

You're sitting next to me
The leaves are on the ground
My heart is in your hands
The ticking of the clock
The siren on the street
My heart is in your hands
But all I ever wanted
All I ever really needed
Was just for you to hear me
Just for you to really know me
All I wanted was you to hear me
And all I needed was you to know me
Miles and miles of smiles
Promising the world
It's getting dark down here
We could use a little help
We could use a little spark
Its getting dark down here
But all I ever wanted
All I ever really needed
Was just for you to hear me
Just for you to really know me
All I wanted was you to hear me
And all I needed was you to know me
You're sitting next to me
The leaves are on the ground
My heart is in your hands

All I ever really needed

Just for you to really know me
All I wanted was you to hear me
And all I needed was you to know me

Nowhere to go don't even know my name
Such a long time since I played your war games
Don't know the rules but I can learn real fast
They're gonna start a nuclear blast.
Join in the arms race seems allot of fun
Fingers on the button no need to use a gun
They play their game with a loaded dice
Don't take no orders we just follow advice
The politicians they make all the noise
They're playing pogo with their nuclear toys now.
Join in the arms race seems allot of fun

I kill you I'm a lion
Snap your neck and leave you bleeding
I kill you I'm a virus
Destroy you once I'm in
I'm running I can't beat you
That's why I am so fast
I'm running down the food chain
This breath could be my last
Life is an endless battle raging on and on
Who will last the night and who won't see the dawn
One grows strong, the other stronger
Balance shifting, how much longer?
I'll eat you I'm a shark
Sink my teeth into your flesh
I'll squeeze you I'm a snake
Then down you whole while you're still fresh
I'll hide so you can't see me
Make myself disappear
Competition drives us forward
And blind ambition holds us back
Our tool manipulation
Forcing others' adaptation
Nature learns form its mistakes
Takes generations to improve
Can't run from the higher primates
Unchecked intellect devours
Animal communication
Manipulating other's power
Life is an endless battle raging on and on
Who will last the night and who won't see the dawn
One grows strong, the other stronger
Balance shifting, how much longer?
Life is an endless battle raging on and on
