Project London is an independent, almost no-budget, feature-length, live action movie with vivid, intense, and marrow-vibrating visual effects and animations created with the open source software Blender (and other traditional software) and 250 (or so) worldwide volunteers. It's the first independent movie from writer director, Ian Hubert and features a story set in Seattle, Washington. This special effects-rich science fiction actioner is about a grief stricken young man who joins a ragtag resistance force and engages in epic battles against Joint Command to avenge his father and save the planet.

Financial wizard "Doc" Fletcher (Michael Caine) is sent by crime boss Joe Fiore (Martin Balsam) to buy a bank in Switzerland in order to more easily launder their profits. When he arrives, Fletcher finds that the bank, acquired by his associate Prince di Siracusa (Louis Jourdan), consists of some shabby offices above a restaurant. To make up for this, the Prince suggests that Fletcher invests in a silver mine owned by Shireen and Agha Firdausi (Stéphane Audran and David Warner). This solves one problem, but the mine also attracts the attention of some of the most powerful people in the silver business. Fletcher must pull out all his wheeler-dealing skills in order to keep hold of everything he's worked for, in the process romancing a banker's discontented wife (Cybill Shepherd).

In this Warner Bros. short, a Marine in a South Sea island during World War II, Joe Fingers, tells tales of the influence he's had on various personalities. In the words of one of his buddies, he's either the biggest liar in the world or the most important man in show business. This is a film we created to introduce people to the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois. The University of Illinois at Chicago Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety Education and Research Center (Illinois ERC), a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded training grant provides MS and PhD training in industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational safety, and occupational epidemiology as well as occupational medicine residency training, including MPH graduate degree, and specialized training in agricultural safety and health to students in a variety of degree programs. Additionally the continuing education and outreach program exists as a resource on occupational health and safety issues for all and to support the goals and objectives of the NIOSH Training Grants Program and the WHO Global Plan of Action on Workers Health 2007-2017. The Illinois ERC exists to improve, promote, and maintain the health of workers and communities by applying innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to: • prepare professionals to be leaders in occupational and environmental safety and health who will direct and manage occupational and environmental safety and health programs, teach other occupational and environmental health professionals, and research issues pertinent to occupational and environmental safety and health; • provide continuing education to occupational and environmental health and safety professionals and outreach to workers and communities to improve their knowledge, skills, and awareness of key issues in occupational and environmental safety and health, devoting special attention to the problems and needs of at risk and underserved workers and communities; • contribute to the knowledge base in occupational and environmental safety and health by preparing doctoral students, performing faculty and student research on problems of regional, national, and global significance, and disseminating the results of their research; and • serve as a regional OS&H; information resource. The Illinois ERC, funded since 1977 and comprised of 13 programs, is a multi-campus, multi-college Center that is administratively housed in the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Division in the School of Public Health. Currently the ERC has five academic programs, three continuing education programs, two research training programs, and a center administration program. Over the past 30 years the Illinois ERC has worked with professional associations, government agencies, other university and college programs, and individuals to understand and address the occupational safety and health training needs in the region, nationally, and internationally. Each year approximately 15 new occupational safety and health professionals graduate and continuing education is provided to more than 2000 such professionals. The Illinois ERC strengths include: the Centers sound past performance in training occupational safety and health professionals; the quality and continuity of leadership; the synergy generated in the Center by the leadership and the multidisciplinary nature of many of the training activities; the overall coordination and integration of activities within the ERC; the depth and extent of interdisciplinary training and research training for all trainees and professionals; the depth and diversity of outreach to the Chicago regional area; a strong, model Pilot Project Research Training Program; and focused efforts to train minority students. During a Chicago-area universities tour, Professor Steven Salaita spoke at the University of Chicago on October 7, 2014. He was joined by Electronic Intifada author Ali Abunimah. The topic of this meeting was to discuss the facts and implications concerning why a job offer made to Prof. Salaita in August at the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) was withdrawn by the administration, following his public tweets criticizing Israel over the bombing of Gaza and killing of over 500 children there. Salaita is introduced by Brian Leiter, professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago. Leiter comments on the legal circumstances. "That First Amendment right does not come with a caveat to the effect that only civil or respectful expression is actually protected...Yet the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois have acted as though they have a right to punish speakers who say "f**k" the draft or f**k America or f**k Israel. But they have no such right." Salaita and Abunimah focused on the key issues of what Salaita's firing means in the critical battle on U.S. campuses over academic freedom, and in American society in general over the first amendment and U.S. foreign policy. Salaita is amply quotable. Israel wants Palestinians to think of themselves "that our barbarity is atavistic and imminent. It precedes our subjectivity, restricts our earthly presence and marks us as inferior. We can achieve the lofty status of pitiable only when we grovel." Cathay is using BA business class and first class lounge now instead of Swiss Airlines lounge. It is a small lounge (business class lounge) with no window. They offered limited amount of food and there is no shower room available in this lounge. The flight itself is a long flight due to strong headwind. I was seated at 40K which is the first bulkhead economy class seat. The flight was empty, there were some lucky people that can use 3 seats as their bed. Cathay's service are always exceptional, but they still need to improve their inflight meal. I never find Cathay's meal delicious even in business class. GARY | U.S. Steel has idled a blast furnace at Gary Works and now issued layoff warnings to about 9,000 workers nationwide. The company employs about 35,000 workers globally under normal operating conditions. So far this year, the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker has laid off 2,800 workers across the county, including at Gary Works and the idled East Chicago Tin. Production has been cut at all its North American plants because the demand for steel is so low. CEO Mario Longhi warned more layoffs could be coming amid a record glut of foreign imports and after a worse-than-expected first-quarter loss analysts called "ugly." He blamed cheap oil and imports. "Our order rates have been significantly impacted by high levels of imports into the North America market that have continued unabated, resulting in operating levels that have caused us to lay off a significant number of our employees and will likely result in the number of layoffs increasing going forward," Longhi said. "We are attacking every aspect of our cost structure and exercising every opportunity that we have to eliminate, reduce and defer costs. We have many cost levers that we can pull in response to a downturn in market conditions and we are pulling them as quickly and as hard as we can." U.S. Steel has cut back operations at eight plants, resulting in an estimated $200 million of annualized cost savings. Blast furnaces have been idled at Gary Works, Fairfield in Alabama and Granite Works in Illinois. East Chicago Tin sits idled. The coke plant at Gary Works has been shut down for good. "We've taken aggressive and decisive actions to address the extremely challenging conditions we are currently facing in North America," Longhi said. "Some of these are very difficult decisions that have a significant impact on our employees and their families, and we do not take these lightly. But these are some of the actions that are necessary for us to remain well positioned to respond when the market conditions improve." Over the first three months of the year, the steelmaker lost $75 million, or 52 cents a share, after net sales plummeted by 26 percent. U.S. Steel had turned a profit of $52 million in the first quarter of 2014, which was its first profitable year in a half decade. "We faced extremely difficult conditions in the first quarter with high levels of imports and supply chain inventories and rapidly falling spot prices and rig count significantly impacting volumes at both our flat rolled and tubular segments," Chief Financial Officer David Burritt said. The company expects to cut operating expenses by at least $340 million this year, through projects such as reducing inventory and freight costs that are part of the ongoing Carnegie Way initiative to make U.S. Steel profitable in good times and bad. That figure does not include the $200 million U.S. Steel expects to save from layoffs and idlings, which Longhi said would be temporary. "I would like to emphasize that these are the result of short-term actions that will reverse eventually as we return to normal operating levels and bring our people back to work," Longhi said. Chicago Area Miss Arab USA wants to challenge stereotypes September 20,2011 By Burt Constable As a Catholic schoolgirl at St. Peter the Apostle School in Itasca, Christina Rafidia opened eyes and broadened minds just by eating lunch. "I loved sharing my food, my music, my culture, my language," remembers Rafidia, now a 22-year-old biology major at the University of Illinois at Chicago who is preparing her applications for dental school. In the peanut butter and ham sandwich world of suburban school lunchrooms, Rafidia would unpack a feast of hummus on pita bread and explain to her classmates that her entree was a staple in her home, influenced by the Jordanian roots of her mother, Marlin, and the Palestinian upbringing of her father, Munir. "Everybody found it really interesting that I was from another culture. Everybody was really cool," the brown-eyed Rafidia says of her suburban childhood. She had a similar experience at Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison, where she was a cheerleader for four years, was elected to homecoming and prom courts, and competed as a gymnast on park district teams. As the newly crowed Miss Arab USA, Rafidia now gets the chance to share her ethnic background with her fellow Americans. "I'm so proud. I couldn't think of any other ethnicity I'd want to be," says Rafidia, who adds that she still "can't believe" the moment when she was crowned Miss Arab USA during a grand ceremony last weekend at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. Her first full day as Miss Arab USA was Sept. 11, when the nation was consumed with the 10th anniversary of the attacks on America and the nation's perceptions of Arabs then and today. "It was great just to show that this is what is happening now," notes Sara Massoud, a spokeswoman for the pageant and the American Arab Association that sponsors it. "I really sympathize with the people and families who went through that," Rafidia says of the victims of Sept. 11, 2001. "I'm devastated by that still." The pageant featured women representing the 22 Arab nations, and while some women wore the hijab headscarves of their Muslim religion, the pageant is "nonpolitical and nonreligious," Massoud says. "You have to always be open-minded," says Rafidia, who notes that she embraces her identity as an American, an Arab, a woman and a Christian. Her job, she says, is to educate people who might get bogged down by prejudice or stereotypes. "Everybody has the stereotype of Arab women as being closed off, very meek, inferior to the men. That's not true," Rafidia says with a laugh. "I have the biggest mouth. I don't have that problem. My job is to portray Arab women in a different light. My mom and dad have the most amazing relationship in the world. It's totally a 50-50 thing." Having never been a contestant in a pageant before, Rafidia says she was surprised to make the top 100, let alone survive the cut to 50 before being one of the 22 contestants brought onstage for the finals. She had to keep reminding herself that not hearing her name announced as one of the runners-up was a good thing. "And now it's just me and the other girl onstage," Rafidia recalls. "Next thing, I have a crown on my head and I'm crying like a little baby." While the radiant Rafidia says she works at maintaining her fit figure and always tries to look her best, the Miss Arab USA pageant doesn't include a swimsuit competition or focus on physical attractiveness. Rafidia was chosen "based upon her general elegance, education and world knowledge, skill set, talents, community involvement and service," according to the pageant rules. She answered four questions for the judges in English and one in Arabic, and sang the country hit "I Hope You Dance" (the only contestant who sang in English) during a talent competition that included everything from belly dancing to poetry to a photography display. "Everybody was amazing," says Rafidia, who adds that sharing the accomplishments of Arab women is one of her main goals during her yearlong reign. As a child in 1998, she visited her father's Palestinian hometown of Nazareth in Israel and her mother's relatives in Amman, Jordan. As Miss Arab USA, she will visit different parts of this country before she starts dental school. Since 2007, Rafidia has been working as a dental assistant in the Arlington Heights office of 1st Family Dental, which also has offices in Roselle, Aurora, Elgin and Chicago. Her parents, who live in Barrington, also are sending her brothers, Amir, 21, and Jeremy, 18, to the University of Illinois at Chicago. Just as she did as a little girl teaching classmates about hummus, Rafidia says she wants to continue bringing people together. "My favorite thing is watching cultures mix," Rafidia says, noting the world seems to be getting more open-minded every day. "Going to the grocery store and seeing hummus is so cool. I love that."
