Educational Content: A comedo is a clogged hair follicle (pore) in the skin. Keratin (skin debris) combines with oil to block the follicle. A comedo can be open (blackhead) or closed by skin (whitehead), and occur with or without acne. The word comedo comes from Latin to suggest the worm-like look of a blackhead that has been secreted. The plural of comedo is comedones.
The chronic inflammatory condition that usually includes both comedones and inflamed papules and pustules (pimples) is called acne. Infection causes inflammation and the development of pus. Whether or not a skin condition classifies as acne depends on the amount of comedones and infection.
Comedo-type ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is not related to the skin conditions discussed here. DCIS is a non-invasive form of breast cancer, but comedo-type DCIS may be more aggressive and so may be more likely to become invasive.
A comedone extractor is a tool used to remove blemishes, such as blackheads, pimples, and whiteheads. Often, those who are afflicted with these common skin conditions are hesitant to remove the blemishes because they are afraid of scarring, which can happen under some circumstances. An extractor tool is not much bigger than a pair of tweezers and is said to make removal easier, without as much risk of creating scars.
The tool has one or two looped ends, with one of them usually ending in a sharper point. In most cases, the extractor can be used to remove some surface pimples, but blemishes located deeper should be left alone due to risk of infection and scarring. The comedone extractor uses the looped end to apply pressure to all areas of the pimple. This is different than the finger squeeze method, which centers pressure on one point.
While it may be possible to use the comedone extractor by itself, with very little preparation, it is not recommended. Instead, the directions usually call for the skin to be exposed to steam for a few minutes, which helps open up the skin pores a little more. Caution should be taken during this step, simply because there is a potential of getting burned, depending on how hot the water is. There are different types of Acne or pimples. They all start with plugged-up pores. They are mainly two types
1) NONINFLAMMATORY ACNE: WHITEHEADS & BLACKHEADS
2) INFLAMMATORY ACNE: PIMPLES THAT CAN CAUSE PAIN
NONINFLAMMATORY ACNE :
BLACKHEADS - If the plug enlarges and widens the pore, it's called an open comedo or a blackhead. It is due to buildup of melanin (dark pigment) and oxidized oil.
WHITEHEAD- A whitehead is a closed comedone. A thin covering of skin traps the plug beneath the pore's surface, preventing the oil from oxidizing, keeping it white .
INFLAMMATORY ACNE:
Inflammatory acne occurs when your immune system responds to the bacteria and trapped oil inside the hair follicle.
The degree of inflammation associated with these types of acne , determines the size, redness, tenderness and potential to scar.
Papules
These are small to medium sized pink dome-shaped bumps that often feel tender to the touch.
Pustules
These skin lesions have a yellowish white center with a red base. Pustules form when a plug deep inside a pore traps oil and bacteria, attracting white blood cells to fight the infection.
More the inflammation, the redder and larger the pustules.
Nodules and Cysts
Nodules are large, solid and often painful bumps that extend into the deeper skin layers. Cysts are sac-like structures filled with liquid material consisting of red and white blood cells, oil and bacteria. This lesions can produce permanent scars.
A dilated pore of Winer is a hair structure anomaly that appears as an enlarged solitary comedo. The cause of a dilated pore of Winer is unknown.Winer suggested that an infection or an obstruction of the follicle ostium is the stimulus for the development of a dilated pore of Winer in a process similar to those of inflammatory cystic acne or other cystic conditions.

It's good to be back! After having had to take a break from youtube due to family matters, it's time for macro madness again. Starting off with another experiment: those hard to get blackheads on the tip of the nose. Using the back of the blade, it's actually quite easy to extract them without damaging the skin. It also has the fun side effect of the blackheads piling up to create a warped mess of keratin and sebaceous fluid. Bring your barf bag!
I try to inject a little art into the whole blackhead extraction thing :) Hope you enjoy the video!

Comedone Extractor Instructions
Using a comedone extractor can seem a bit intimidating at first. But with a little practice, you'll see how easy it is. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to use your extractor.
1. Use a warm or hot washcloth to open your pores.
When using a comedone extractor, the first thing you need to do is open the clogged pores you will be extracting. The easiest way to do this is to apply heat or steam to your face. We recommend taking a hot shower first, or laying a warm or hot washcloth on your face for several minutes. This allows for easier cleaning and oil removal.
2. Sterilize your extractor.
Before each use and in-between every extraction, you will need to thoroughly clean your comedone extractor to kill any bacteria still residing on the tool. This helps prevent reinfection. If you use a dirty extractor, you can re-infect the area. Simply use a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol and rub both ends of your extractor for about 30 seconds to a minute......

It's good to be back! After having had to take a break from youtube due to family matters, it's time for macro madness again. Starting off with another experiment: those hard to get blackheads on the tip of the nose. Using the back of the blade, it's actually quite easy to extract them without damaging the skin. It also has the fun side effect of the blackheads piling up to create a warped mess of keratin and sebaceous fluid. Bring your barf bag! In most cases, the extractor can be used to remove some surface pimples, but blemishes located deeper should be left alone due to risk of infection and scarring. While it may be possible to use the comedone extractor by itself, with very little preparation, it is not recommended. Instead, the directions usually call for the skin to be exposed to steam for a few minutes, which helps open up the skin pores a little more. A dilated pore of Winer is a hair structure anomaly that appears as an enlarged solitary comedo. The cause of a dilated pore of Winer is unknown.Winer suggested that an infection or an obstruction of the follicle ostium is the stimulus for the development of a dilated pore of Winer in a process similar to those of inflammatory cystic acne or other cystic conditions.

It's good to be back! After having had to take a break from youtube due to family matters, it's time for macro madness again. Starting off with another experiment: those hard to get blackheads on the tip of the nose. Using the back of the blade, it's actually quite easy to extract them without damaging the skin. It also has the fun side effect of the blackheads piling up to create a warped mess of keratin and sebaceous fluid. Bring your barf bag!
I try to inject a little art into the whole blackhead extraction thing :) Hope you enjoy the video!

Wikipedia: A comedo is a clogged hair follicle (pore) in the skin. Keratin (skin debris) combines with oil to block the follicle. A comedo can be open (blackhead) or closed by skin (whitehead), and occur with or without acne. The word comedo comes from Latin to suggest the worm-like look of a blackhead that has been secreted. The plural of comedo is comedones.
The chronic inflammatory condition that usually includes both comedones and inflamed papules and pustules (pimples) is called acne. Infection causes inflammation and the development of pus. Whether or not a skin condition classifies as acne depends on the amount of comedones and infection.
Comedo-type ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is not related to the skin conditions discussed here. DCIS is a non-invasive form of breast cancer, but comedo-type DCIS may be more aggressive and so may be more likely to become invasive.....

Using a comedone extractor can seem a bit intimidating at first. But with a little practice, you'll see how easy it is. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to use your extractor.
1. Use a warm or hot washcloth to open your pores.
When using a comedone extractor, the first thing you need to do is open the clogged pores you will be extracting. The easiest way to do this is to apply heat or steam to your face. We recommend taking a hot shower first, or laying a warm or hot washcloth on your face for several minutes. This allows for easier cleaning and oil removal.
2. Sterilize your extractor.
Before each use and in-between every extraction, you will need to thoroughly clean your comedone extractor to kill any bacteria still residing on the tool. This helps prevent reinfection. If you use a dirty extractor, you can re-infect the area. Simply use a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol and rub both ends of your extractor for about 30 seconds to a minute......

Q. Might I suggest an alternative solution to E.B. of London’s problem (3 October) about the person sporting a ‘maddening’ blackhead at a poolside party? Surely a more tactful way of drawing the man’s attention to the blackhead would have been for E.B ... A. Thank you ... Make it absolutely clear what you removed, but refer to it as a ‘comedo’, the more glamorous scientific term for blackhead. Q ... A ... Q ... A ... ....
