After seeing the awesome No-Mar tire changer in action at the Portland International Motorcycle Show, I decided to see how long it takes me to change a tire by hand. I am using two Emgo tire irons and a C-clamp to break the bead. The wheel I am working with is just a spare for my GSX-R600 so I am not using any rim protectors. The tire is a very stiff Dunlop Ntec racing slick, so expect the process to be easier with a more flexible DOT tire.

Tire iron
A tire iron (also tire lever or tire spoon) is a specialized metal tool used in working with tires. Tire irons have not been in common use for automobile tires since the shift to the use of tubeless tires in the late 1950s.
Bicycle tire irons are still in use for those tires which have a separate inner tube, and can have a hooked C-shape cut into one end of the iron so that it may be hooked on a bicycle spoke to hold it in place.
Description and use
Tire irons usually come in pairs, or threes, and are used to pry the edge of a tire away from the rim of the wheel it has been mounted on. After one iron has pried a portion of the tire from its wheel, it is held in position while a second iron is applied further along the tire to pry more of the tire away from the wheel. This allows enough of the tire to be separated so that the first iron can be removed, and used again on the far side of the other iron. Alternating in this way, a person can work all the way around the tire to fully remove it from the wheel, in order to reach the tube that sits inside.

Iron
Iron is a chemical element with symbol Fe (from Latin: ferrum) and atomic number 26. It is a metal in the first transition series. It is by mass the most common element on Earth, forming much of Earth's outer and inner core. It is the fourth most common element in the Earth's crust. Its abundance in rocky planets like Earth is due to its abundant production by fusion in high-mass stars, where the production of nickel-56 (which decays to the most common isotope of iron) is the last nuclear fusion reaction that is exothermic. Consequently, radioactive nickel is the last element to be produced before the violent collapse of a supernova scatters precursor radionuclide of iron into space.
Like other group 8 elements, iron exists in a wide range of oxidation states, −2 to +6, although +2 and +3 are the most common. Elemental iron occurs in meteoroids and other low oxygen environments, but is reactive to oxygen and water. Fresh iron surfaces appear lustrous silvery-gray, but oxidize in normal air to give hydrated iron oxides, commonly known as rust. Unlike many other metals which form passivating oxide layers, iron oxides occupy more volume than the metal and thus flake off, exposing fresh surfaces for corrosion.

After seeing the awesome No-Mar tire changer in action at the Portland International Motorcycle Show, I decided to see how long it takes me to change a tire by hand. I am using two Emgo tire irons and a C-clamp to break the bead. The wheel I am working with is just a spare for my GSX-R600 so I am not using any rim protectors. The tire is a very stiff Dunlop Ntec racing slick, so expect the process to be easier with a more flexible DOT tire.

Short video for ideas on making holsters for the Stubby tire iron. When traveling out in the middle of nowhere, it's nice to have with you the tools for making quick repairs. Tire irons are one of those important items, but carrying them can be a hassle. The tire iron to use of course is the Stubby plastic tire irons. A simple holster made of fuel hose mounted to the rear fender in a strategic position and you will always have them with you..... Any hose that won't crush down easily with a 1" ID will work. Drill holes just big enough for thin zip ties. Inside set will be right at black tail light cover and outside set of holes will be just before the hose makes contact with fender. - Before you put the tube back in, make sure it has a tiny bit of air in it -- just enough to prevent it from collapsing on itself or twisting up. With "double tough" tubes, this isn't as important but regular tubes it's very important.
- The name of the blue tool at 17:54 that holds the bead down is the Bead Buddy II by Motion Pro.
Step by step recap:

Removing tire
=============
1. Remove wheel spacers from both sides of wheel.
2. Place wheel on bucket.
3. Let out all the air in the tire.
4. Loosen valve stem nut (but don't remove it).
5. Loosen rim lock nut (but don't remove it).
6. Push bead down into the center channel on both sides of the wheel (i.e. flip wheel over and do the other side, too).
7. Flip wheel so that brake rotor side is up.
8. Start on the other side of the rim lock and slide 3 tire irons under the bead right next to each other.
9. Push the 1st iron over to lift the bead up over the rim and shove the 1st iron under the rotor.
10. Push the 2nd (middle) iron to lift the bead and hold onto it.
11. Push the 3rd iron to lift the bead and shove it under the rotor.
12. Pull out the 2nd (middle) iron and continue around the tire a few inches at a time lifting the bead over.
13. Now that the bead is completely up, remove the valve stem nut, push the valve stem through the rim, and remove the tube.
14. Flip the tire over.
15. Use a tire iron, start at the rim lock, and pull the bead up over the rim.
16. From the rim lock working outwards on both sides, pull the bead up over the rim with a tire iron until half the bead is up on this side of the tire.
17. Push the whole rim into the tire towards the rim lock (i.e. where you've lifted up the bead on both sides).
18. Push down on the tire opposite the rim lock while holding onto the rim and you should be able to push the tire off the rim (the tire will drop down around the bucket).
