Various shots of boda bodas moving around in Kampala city centre LEAD IN : Weaving between cars, dodging potholes and riding along the pavement to avoid Kampala's jams is as exhilarating as any fairground ride with a boda boda. The city's taxi motorbikes are as much part of its image, as black cabs in London, yellow New York taxis or Bangkok's tuk-tuks STORYLINE: The boda boda motorbikes that carry one passenger originated out of an idea from the 1960s. Then, entrepreneurial cyclists found that travellers would pay a small amount to have themselves and their goods transported across the no-man's-land between the borders of Uganda and Kenya. The original 'border to border' bike taxis have evolved into motorbike taxis called "boda boda" . Isaac Kabuya, a boda boda driver, says that his customers like the flexibility of the service. With an average daytime population of 2.5 million people in Kampala city (according to UN figures), the current estimate of 30,000 boda boda operators cater to the population regardless of their social stature. The boda boda in Kampala is a popular mode of transport, in the increasingly congested city centre. The ever increasing number of motor vehicles and narrow roads cause long traffic jams and makes travelling across the city slow and expensive for customers. The boda boda is fast, efficient and cheap. A 5 kilometre boda journey would be around 75 cents compared to a mini bus ride which would cost about $1 US.
