Some days I am moving easily through the world & I am aware of being present & I am so full with this feeling I could burst. In a good way. Mostly though, I find it hard to relax. I rush to finish things, to have done something rather than be doing it. It feels like my brain never switches off. Learning to stay is the work of a lifetime. For me, poems are part of that work. Seeing and re-seeing the world. Writing and re-writing what I see.
This piece is my second commissioned poem as Poet Laureate for the London Borough of Brent. I have lived in Brent for over five years now, but until recently had never visited BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, which is popularly known as the 'Neasden Temple'. It is the largest Hindu temple outside of India, and is a genuinely awe-inspiring place. The temple is built from over 5,000 tonnes of Italian Marble and Bulgarian limestone, which was shipped to India to be hand carved before being shipped back in 26,300 pieces, which were then assembled on the site where it now stands. I know. It's gleaming white domes would look incredible anywhere but rising up as they do within the residential streets of Neasden their sublime other worldliness is amplified.
Walking in, you know you are somewhere special. The thing is, sometimes when I know am I somewhere special, particularly somewhere peaceful where it would feel right to be 'in the moment' I instead end up with a feeling of watching myself, and wishing I could stop watching myself, and then watching myself wish I could stop watching myself. This time around I tried to embrace that experience by writing about it.
Inside the mandir at Neasden temple
Each gleaming white pillar is a spotlight of silence.
I read that inner peace brings you in to contact
with your true divine nature. See the intricate infinity
of patterns in the domed roof above. Silence
1.water, toilet roll, milk, bread. 2. Put a wash on.
3. Make a plan for the week - factor in time to be spontaneous.
4. Book advance train tickets for Thursday 12th.
I read that Ganesh is the remover of obstacles.
Smile at his one tusked elephants' head and round belly.
Feel my bare feet warm on the marble floor. Silence
5. Adam's email about the invoices. 6. Make space
once everything is done to chill out. Stop.
It is rare to see Ganesh dance. And yet up close
this shiny stone column is carved with such music
that he does. In eight different ways
First on tip toes, with knees bent, trunk swung to one side
As two hands of four beat drums, two carve sky palms wide
trunk grips a trumpet, as left heel kicks high
bells ring, shakers shake, horns blow
Ganesh's father Shiva was the cosmic dancer.
The rhythm of the shapes that he threw
destroyed a weary universe, clearing the way
for the process of creation, and this silence
is its own dance, the ripples
spreading out into the space between

Neasden is an area in northwest London, UK. It forms part of the London Borough of Brent.
The area was recorded as Neasdun in 939 AD and the name is derived from the Old English nēos = 'nose' and dūn = 'hill'. It means 'the nose-shaped hill' referring to a well-defined landmark of this area. In 1750, it was known as Needsden and the present spelling appeared at a later date.
Neasden was a countryside hamlet on the western end of the Dollis Hill ridge. The land was owned by St. Paul's Cathedral. In the medieval times the village consisted of several small buildings around the green near the site of the present roundabout.
In the 15th–17th century the Roberts family were the major landowners in the area. Thomas Roberts erected Neasden House (on the site of the modern Clifford Court) in the reign of Henry VIII. In 1651 Sir William Roberts bought confiscated church lands. After the Restoration the estates went back to the Church, but were leased to the Roberts family. Sir William improved Neasden House and in 1664 it was one of the largest houses in Willesden parish.

David William Donald Cameron (pronunciation: /ˈkæmərən/; born 9 October 1966) is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, First Lord of the Treasury, Minister for the Civil Service and Leader of the Conservative Party. He represents Witney as its Member of Parliament (MP).
Cameron studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Oxford, gaining a first class honours degree. He then joined the Conservative Research Department and became Special Adviser to Norman Lamont, and then to Michael Howard. He was Director of Corporate Affairs at Carlton Communications for seven years.
He was defeated in his first candidacy for Parliament at Stafford in 1997, but was elected in 2001 as the Member of Parliament for the Oxfordshire constituency of Witney. He was promoted to the Opposition front bench two years later, and rose rapidly to become head of policy co-ordination during the 2005 general election campaign. With a public image of a youthful, moderate candidate who would appeal to young voters, he won the Conservative leadership election in 2005.

London Mandir 20th Anniversary Finale Celebrations
The 20th anniversary of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London was joyously celebrated in the presence of Sadguru Pujya Mahant Swami, Sadguru Pujya Ishwarcharan Swami and Pujya Atmaswarup Swami on Saturday 22 August and again on Sunday 23 August 2015. Through creative three-dimensional projection mapping, innovative visual effects, and a series of inspiring video presentations and enlightening discourses, a team of more than 190 performers and crew brought to life the history, memories and future of London Mandir in a spectacular three-hour production. Some days I am moving easily through the world & I am aware of being present & I am so full with this feeling I could burst. In a good way. Mostly though, I find it hard to relax. I rush to finish things, to have done something rather than be doing it. It feels like my brain never switches off. Learning to stay is the work of a lifetime. For me, poems are part of that work. Seeing and re-seeing the world. Writing and re-writing what I see.
This piece is my second commissioned poem as Poet Laureate for the London Borough of Brent. I have lived in Brent for over five years now, but until recently had never visited BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, which is popularly known as the 'Neasden Temple'. It is the largest Hindu temple outside of India, and is a genuinely awe-inspiring place. The temple is built from over 5,000 tonnes of Italian Marble and Bulgarian limestone, which was shipped to India to be hand carved before being shipped back in 26,300 pieces, which were then assembled on the site where it now stands. I know. It's gleaming white domes would look incredible anywhere but rising up as they do within the residential streets of Neasden their sublime other worldliness is amplified.
Walking in, you know you are somewhere special. The thing is, sometimes when I know am I somewhere special, particularly somewhere peaceful where it would feel right to be 'in the moment' I instead end up with a feeling of watching myself, and wishing I could stop watching myself, and then watching myself wish I could stop watching myself. This time around I tried to embrace that experience by writing about it.
Inside the mandir at Neasden temple
Each gleaming white pillar is a spotlight of silence.
I read that inner peace brings you in to contact
with your true divine nature. See the intricate infinity
of patterns in the domed roof above. Silence
1.water, toilet roll, milk, bread. 2. Put a wash on.
3. Make a plan for the week - factor in time to be spontaneous.
4. Book advance train tickets for Thursday 12th.
I read that Ganesh is the remover of obstacles.
Smile at his one tusked elephants' head and round belly.
Feel my bare feet warm on the marble floor. Silence
5. Adam's email about the invoices. 6. Make space
once everything is done to chill out. Stop.
It is rare to see Ganesh dance. And yet up close
this shiny stone column is carved with such music
that he does. In eight different ways
First on tip toes, with knees bent, trunk swung to one side
As two hands of four beat drums, two carve sky palms wide
trunk grips a trumpet, as left heel kicks high
bells ring, shakers shake, horns blow
Ganesh's father Shiva was the cosmic dancer.
The rhythm of the shapes that he threw
destroyed a weary universe, clearing the way
for the process of creation, and this silence
is its own dance, the ripples
spreading out into the space between

On our first full day in London we started the morning with the London Original Double Decker bus tour. I would suggest everyone start with this to get familiar with the city. We decided to stay on the bus for the entire route. Once completed we knew exactly what we wanted to do and how we would backtrack to take full advantage of the time we had available.
We purchased tickets for "The Original Tour, London Sightseeing" which I believe to be the best company available. http://www.theoriginaltour.com/
The tour guide was great, I can't remember her name but she was very good and we really enjoyed her stories.

Regent Street was delighted to welcome the Paralympic Games to London.
On August 29, the torch arrived in splendor and traveled along Regent Street in the sunshine of a late summer morning, before making its way through Westminster to the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony.
The torch made its way over a 24 hour period from Stoke Mandeville -- the home of Paralympic sports, to London's West End.
At the junction where Air Street meets with Regent Street, the torch was handed over to 5 new torch bearers who then continued their way down the famous Regent Street curve towards Piccadilly Circus.
Regent Street's national flags display, grand shops, award winning window displays and architecture influenced by Nash created a great backdrop for the event. The Torch convoy travelled from Oxford Circus, passing Omega, the official timekeepers for the games, as well as the famous Apple store, one of the most worshipped brands of the world. It also passed by the many purveyors of British Fashion, including Liberty, Jaeger, Mappin & Webb and Austin Reed. Once the torch had travelled along Regent Street, it was welcomed by onlookers in spectacular fashion at Piccadilly Circus.
The torch then continued towards Haymarket and Pall Mall in St James's . After the relay, spectators flocked to celebrate alfresco dining at the two main Regent Street food quarters, Swallow Street and Heddon Street, just off Regent Street, and took advantage of the outdoor space and feel good atmosphere on the 'Mile of Style'.
Once again, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has provided a once in a lifetime experience for Londoners to witness the most important event in the world, and to be a part of the action in the heart of London's celebrated West End.

Canning Town is an inter-modal transport interchange in Canning Town, East London. It is served by the London Underground Jubilee line, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and local buses operated for London Buses. On 11 November 2015 the Mayor of London announced that it would be rezoned to be on the boundary of Travel-card Zone 2 and Travel-card Zone 3. Until 1873 it was known as Barking Road.

London Underground is made up of 270 stations. Its length is 408 kilometers.
Fares and payment methods:
Tickets can be purchased from the vending machines in the subway as well as small shops and newspaper stalls not far from metro stations. As fares can be paid Oyster card and Travelcard.
Oyster card - a plastic card that works like a payment card in transport and as a debit card, which you can put the money to pay for travel and simply resting it up to here this terminal
Do not forget that you need to put the card on the input and output to have marked the route on the areas and in accordance with the calculated and written-off payment for the trip.
This card is very convenient for those who are not able to deal with charging by zones and do not know their future routes.
Blank card costs 5 £. The money for it can be put through cash machines and in subway stations. The card can at any time go back and get it, plus the cost of the money that remained on it.
Travelcard - is a paper map for travel on all modes of transport including metro. Maps come in daily and weekly as well as a month or more. When purchasing a card in the subway you can upload to Oyster card.
