London is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence. It is the world's leading financial centre alongside New York City and has the fifth-largest city GDP in the world (and the largest in Europe). London has been described as a world cultural capital. It was the world's most visited city during 2011 and London Heathrow is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers. London's 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education in Europe. In 2012 London will become the first city to host the modern Summer Olympic Games three times.
During the 18th century, the Enlightenment culminated in the French and American revolutions. Philosophy and science increased in prominence. Philosophers dreamed of a brighter age. This dream turned into a reality with the French Revolution, although it was later compromised by excess of the terror of Maximilien Robespierre. At first, the monarchies of Europe embraced Enlightenment ideals, but with the French Revolution they feared losing their power and joined wide coalitions with the counter-revolution.
The Ottoman Empire was undergoing a protracted decline, as it failed to keep up with the technological advances in Europe. The Tulip period symbolized a period of peace and reorientation towards European society, after victory against a burgeoning Russian Empire in the Pruth River Campaign. Throughout the century various reforms were introduced with limited success.
The 18th century also marked the end of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as an independent state. The once powerful and vast kingdom, that was once able to conquer Moscow and defeat the great Ottoman armies, collapsed under numerous invasions. Its semi-democratic government system was not efficient enough to rival the neighbouring monarchies of Prussia, Russia and Austria who divided the Commonwealth territories among them, changing the landscape of Central European politics for the next hundred years.

To add to these delights dead dogs cats rats mice and even horses were left there to rot. Careful You might even trip over a human corpseNow the residents of the City did enjoy running water of a sort. It came to them through hollowed out tree trunks which ran beneath the streets. This business of spring or bottled water is nothing new. The wealthier residents were able to buy such a commodity from private companies. The water that most people used for drinking came from the river Thames. Unfortunately the river was also the dumping place for goodness knows what else. It was crowded with barges and boats of all types since it was the main shipping thoroughfare. The water therefore was murky and of an indeterminate colour. Noone thought of filtering it apparently or making any effort to protect it from pollution until the middle of the 19th. century. Partly because the water was so suspect and partly for equally obvious reasons the first half of the 18th. century saw the Great Gin Craze. How in the world any work was ever accomplished I have no idea. The gin was tasty intoxicating unregulated and cheap. As they used to sayDrunk for a penny. Dead drunk for tuppence. Sellers of gin could be found on most corners and along the highways and in London alone there were reckoned to be 8000 places where gin was openly sold. Sanitation was unheard of. There were private bathrooms but only in the wealthiest homes and then not until the end of the 18th. century. The raw sewage would keep accumulating stagnate in the cesspools made by the rain and other refuse until night time when people known as 'soil men' came and cleared it all up. There were systems of complex sewers but these were designed to carry away the rainwater. The idea was good but the practical application needed work. It ended up with them carrying away a lot more than just rainwater. There are records of public complaints that showed that apart from water the sewers also carried the filth of pigsties and slaughterhouses. The underground pipes were of poor construction too so that the water mains had an unfortunate habit of bursting fairly regularly. Sudden springs would appear mix with all the debris of the streets and turn into a foul foetid mix through which pedestrians would have to wade if they wished to reach where they intended to go. Reading all this now we think it must have been the closest thing to a hell on earth that you could find. But then the residents rich and poor were brought up with it

Street pub
The British might have a reputation for prim propriety but it seems that wasn't always the case, as a recently rediscovered
cache of 18th century tiles reveals.
Kept under lock and key since their discovery in a Fleet Street pub in 1962, the reliefs offer an explicit peek into Georgian
bedrooms and prove that far from being strait-laced, the 18th century was a considerably more risque place than previously
thought.
Now the tiles are to go on display for the first time during a late night event at the Museum of London, although, as you
might expect, it's strictly for those aged over 18.
Late London: City of Seduction gives visitors a peek into the bedrooms of London's historical inhabitants, with Romans
rituals, ancient erotic sculpture and Georgian prostitutes among the stars of the show.

cache of 18th century tiles reveals.

The sleepy residential suburb is conveniently located in South London and thanks to it's excellent transport links, it only takes 15 minutes to get here.
Clapham high street is a great place to buy some gifts, there's a wide range of varied and exciting shops to check out. I also visited the 24 hour market on Venn Street. It's a great place to pick up some locally grown vegetables and freshly baked goods.
Many travel to Clapham for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and if peace and quiet is what you're after then Clapham Common is the place for you. Anglo Saxons first settled on the common in 1887, now-a-days it's used purel

Travel video about destination London in England.
London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts.
The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty medieval fortress with 13 towers that throughout its 900 years, has served many functions and from the Middle Ages, it was a heavily fortified prison.
After the medieval St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the 36 years of its construction, its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created.
The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire of London that destroyed 80 percent of the city. In four days, more than 13,000 buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began.
Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around 60 years later, George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex.
The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames, it rises high into the sky, opposite the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. Exciting both day and night, London is a modern city with age old traditions and a long and colorful history.

Anglo Saxons first settled on the common in 1887, now-a-days it's used purely for recreation and hosts many music festival.
Whether you're into football or dogging, there's something for everyone on the common.
Well I had a lovely day in Clapham and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Here it is, our pilot episode!
Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. So I wanted to create something different. Something aimed at the frequent traveller, something portable and short-form. Something...useful.
In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport into the city, the best way to get around, how much things cost, and why you should ALWAYS stand on the right.
In follow up episodes we'll be adding a food and drink segment, as well as tips on how to avoid those awkward social and business faux pas.
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and welcome any thoughts, feedback, ideas, and suggestions for future episodes. Travel is my passion and I'm excited to share it with you.
Oh and don't forget to subscribe for new episodes in a city near you!

London Wall
London Wall
London Wall
London Wall was the defensive wall first built by the Romans around Londinium, their strategically important port town on the River Thames in what is now the United Kingdom, and subsequently maintained until the 18th century.
It is now the name of a road in the City of London running along part of the course of the old wall between Wormwood Street and the Rotunda junction where St. Martin's Le Grand meets Aldersgate Street. Until the later Middle Ages the wall defined the boundaries of the City of London.

The National Gallery London for kids. Animal Art Trail: 18th Century Art for toddlers & children
Our 18th Century Animal Art trail features Stubb's horse in Whistlejacket by George Stubbs (about1762), Longhi's rhinoceros in Exhibition of a Rhinoceros at Venice by Pietro Longhi (probably 1751), and Hogarth's cat in The Graham Children by William Hogarth (1742).
The National Gallery London is one of the world's best museums and is a fantastic place to take your children. When taking my toddler to the museums, I have mapped out a few routes that only take about 10 minutes! We like to have a look at a few masterpieces featuring animals. This scavenger hunt approach, gives kids a connection to the art and helps them not to be overwhelmed. I recommend keeping your visits short to give your child the chance to remember what they have seen.

Crossrail archaeology: 18th century finds uncovered at Bedlam
Crossrail is undertaking a large-scale excavation at Liverpool Street. Archaeologists are working to unearth up to 3,000 skeletons from the Post-Medieval Bedlam burial ground and parts of the Roman suburbs.
There are 2,000 years of history buried beneath the site of Crossrail's Liverpool Street station, including the foundations of Broad Street railway station; the former Bedlam burial ground; Moorfields marsh; a Roman road and the Walbrook, one of London’s lost rivers.
A gold 400 reis coin from the reign of King John V of Portugal (1706-1750). The coin was found in a cesspit fill on Thursday 12 March by one of the Museum of London Archaeology team. The cesspit also contained c. late 17th to late 18th century pottery.
In this short video, Museum of London Archaeologist Rob Hartle explains what else he found whilst excavating the cesspit.

A trip to London might as well be a trip through history. This city has long been a hub for finance, education, and culture, and is full of modern construction mixed with ancient buildings.
Your London tour must include St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of its most well-known churches. You’ll also want to see the Tower of London, the Palace of Westminster, and Westminster Abbey for exquisite examples of the city’s famous architectural landmarks. Walk or jog through numerous green spaces, among them Hyde Park and Green Park, in the center of London.
Continue your London sightseeing in the West End, where you’ll find ancient buildings converted into modern shops, restaurants, bars, and shows. You’ll find one of the largest theatre districts in the world here, and can take in a different play almost every night of the week.
For a real treat, climb aboard the London Eye, a giant, rotating Ferris wheel, and see the old and new parts of the city all at once.

London Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations
Everyone knows London. The red double-deckers, the black taxis, the red phone booths, the red brick buildings, the guards with the bearskin fur caps are well known by even those, who have never been to the English capital. There are the legendary buildings: the clock-tower of the Parliament, the Big Ben, the Saint Paul Cathedral, the residence of the Queen, the Buckingham Palace, the Westminster, the Tower and the famous bridge, the Tower, the Waterloo and the London bridge are all known from the pages of history books and literary pieces. There are incredibly lots of things to see, there is the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Trafalgar Square, the Piccadilly Circus, the famous parks, the St. James and the Hyde, the rebuilt Globe Theatre, the Madame Tussaud’s, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and the new pride of the city, the London Eye… Not to mention the busy cultural life, the theatres, the restaurants of the Soho and Covent Garden, and the uncountable number of pubs, where in the old days Shakespeare, Dickens or Churchill had their beers.

In London's stylish Mayfair district, overlooking Grosvenor Square, this elegant 4-star hotel offers luxurious air-conditioned rooms and an award-winning Italian restaurant.
Central yet quiet, the Millennium Hotel London Mayfair is less than 500 metres from the shops of Oxford Street and Bond Street. Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and London's financial centres are within easy reach.
With its magnificent Georgian exterior, this 18th-century mansion was once home to the Duchess of Kendal. The building has a rich history and Wellington's victory over Napoleon was announced here. Today, the hotel still offers all the discreet charm of an exclusive private residence.
The elegant en suite rooms are traditionally furnished and have satellite TV, minibars and tea/coffee.
Westminster is a great choice for travellers interested in shopping, theatre and monuments.

Polish 'prince' challenges Nigel Farage to an 18th Century duel with swords
Nigel Farage has been challenged to a duel with swords in Hyde Park by a man claiming to be a Polish prince. Yanek Zylinski, in a video posted to YouTube, slammed the Ukip leader's "idiotic" blaming of immigrants for traffic jams on the M40. Mr Zylinski called on Mr Farage to meet him in Hyde Park in central London to resolve the matter "in a way that an 18th century Polish aristocrat and an English gentleman would traditionally do".

18th Century Legacies: The Past in our Present.
As part of Being Human, A Festival of the Humanities, staff from Northumbria University's Long 18th-Century Research Group hosted a series of events that showcased their research to the wider general public.
The events were themed around 18th century culture, literature and medicine and how it has influenced society today. The festival involved a series of free film screenings, public talks, debates and workshops made possible by a grant from the festival organisers, the School of Advanced Study, University of London, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the British Academy.

Beauty and Power: Plymouth's Greatest Gift - The Cottonian Collection
This nationally important collection encompasses a 2,000 volume library, several thousand prints, Old Master drawings, oil paintings, bronzes and sculptures and works by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
The Collection was largely compiled by Charles Rogers (1711-1783) in mid-18th Century London before being inherited by the Cotton family on his death.
The Collection remained with the Cotton family for three generations until it was finally gifted to the people of Plymouth in 1853 as part of William Cotton III’s bequest.
Initially part of the Proprietary Library, it is now one of the most important collections held at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

London Wall
