Eddi Reader MBE (born Sadenia Reader; 29 August 1959) is a Scottish singer-songwriter, known both for her work with Fairground Attraction and for an enduring solo career. She is the recipient of three BRIT Awards and has topped both the album and singles charts. In 2003 she showcased the works of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns.
Reader was born in Glasgow, the daughter of a welder, and the eldest of seven children (her brother, Francis, is vocalist with the band The Trash Can Sinatras). She was nicknamed Edna by her parents. Living at first in the district of Anderston, Glasgow, in a tenement slum demolished in 1965, the young Reader family moved to a two-bedroomed flat in the estate of Arden, Glasgow.
In 1976, due to overcrowding the family was re-housed 25 miles from Glasgow, in the council development of Irvine, Ayrshire; however, Eddi returned to Glasgow (where she lived with her grandmother) to finish her compulsory schooling. She began playing the guitar at the age of ten, and started her musical career busking, first in Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street, then in the early 1980s in London and around Europe (where she also worked with circus and performance artists).
Single released November 2009. Filmed and edited by John Douglas on the west coast of the Mull of Kintyre.

The famous German alto sings a traditional Scottish song.
This is a Dear John letter, from America, to John McCain. The approximate text: Dear John, We sure have had some good times, haven't we? Back when you were in navy flight school and partied it up, dating exotic dancers, crashing airplanes... Good, clean American fun. There was that time you cheated on your wife, and that time you got involved in the Keating Five scandal and were chastised by the Senate ethics committee. Good stuff. Oh, and remember that time you said Chelsea Clinton was so ugly because her father was Janet Reno? A classic. But lately, something seems different. I don't know, maybe it's me, maybe I've changed. But somehow it's just not funny anymore when you refer to Vietnamese as gooks and when you talk about tar babies. Sure, at the time, I rocked out as you ...

From my Top 20 list of all time favourite artists; comes #17 Eddi Reader. Although i had heard (and actually hated) 'Perfect' by Fairground Attraction in 1988, I had no idea that the lead singer was one Eddi Reader who nearly 15 years later would significantly enter my radius thanks to a recommendation from a family member and become a firm favourite 15 years later. In late 2001 I serendipitously came across Eddi's 1994 selt titled album and I was instantly hooked. 'The Right Place' became a bit of an anthem for 2002 as my life in my late 30's was shifting. I hunted down all the cd's i had missed and have since pursued all Eddi's recordings whether they be her albums, or collaborations; guest appearances or soundtrack tracks. As regular visitors to my channel will know, i have loved Eddi...

Eddi Reader performs a flawless Dear John at the Kirsty MacColl Tribute concert 10.10.10
One of my most treasured discoveries of the past decade and a half has been this Scottish artist Eddi Reader. Shooting to fame as the lead singer of 80's group Fairground Attraction with that annoyingly infectious hit 'Perfect', Eddi has issued several solo albums traversing pop, folk, and celtic genres. There is something pure and uncompromising about Eddi's approach and respect for the music she creates and performs. It is this artistry that engenders the love by fans the world over. Eddi has toured many parts of the globe, reiterating how universal the language of music ultimately is. 'Vagabond' is the title track from her 2014 album. It is quintessential Eddi Reader. Gentle, prosaic, wistful and soulful. Enjoy.

Lyrics: Ae fond kiss, and then we sever [ae = one] Ae fareweel, alas, for ever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee. Who shall say that Fortune grieves him, While the star of hope she leaves him? Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me; [nae = no] Dark despair around benights me. Hummingbird, hummingbird
I knew I'd find you here
Bright lights draw you near, they always will
All that work and worry just to stay still
Hummingbird, hummingbird
Always on your mind
Sweetness you must find, does it get you down ?
You never reach the sky and you cannot touch the ground
Soar you will never soar
Spin or swoop or glide
Soar up above us all
In the shadows you must hide
Soar you will never soar
Spin or swoop or glide
Soar up above us all
In the shadows you must hide
Hummingbird, hummingbird
So you spread your wings
If you forget to sing you'll lose your song
Then where will you go when all the pretty things have
gone ?
