The Battle of Ourique
The Battle of Ourique (25 July 1139: St. James Day) saw the forces of Portuguese Prince Afonso Henriques (of the House of Burgundy) defeat the Almoravid Moors led by Ali ibn Yusuf.
It was during the Battle of Valdevez against Alfonso VII of León that Muslim forces attacked and destroyed Leiria and Trancoso. Afonso Henriques's anxiety at this incursion at his southern frontier hastened his negotiations with Alfonso VII of León after Valdevez, leading to the Treaty of Zamora and freeing Afonso Henrique's troops to deal with the Muslim attack.

El Salvador's governing rightist party has won an overwhelming victory over its leftist rivals in presidential elections, avoiding a second-round runoff, according to official figures.
Francisco Flores had a lead of 51-point-9 to 29-point-3 per cent over his nearest rival, the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, with 92- point-5 per cent of the votes counted.
It's the third consecutive five-year presidential term for the Republican Nationalist Alliance and a setback for the Front, which converted from a guerrilla coalition to a political party with the 1992 peace treaty that ended El Salvador's civil war.

Battle
Historians are divided as to the location of this battle. At the time, the name "Ourique" designated a large area south of Beja. Since 12th century chroniclers where unfamiliar with the region where the battle took place, they might have decided to call the location "camp of Ourique" for lack of a more precise term. Nonetheless, the great distance that separated Ourique from the Christian lines farther north has led some historians to suggest various localities in central Portugal, abandoning the traditional idea that the combat occurred in Ourique in the Alentejo. It would have been difficult for the then Count of Portugal, with a realm little beyond the Mondego River, to go all the way south to battle five Moorish Kings. One plausible alternative is Vila Chã de Ourique, located some ten miles from Santarém.
However, incursions by Christian armies deep in Muslim territory were not unheard-of. Alfonso VII had directed expeditions that had reached Cordoba and Seville, well beyond the limits of Castillian dominions, and in 1147 he managed to conquer the Mediterrenean port of Almería, south of Granada. This was possible because the largest Almoravid armies were positioned at the frontier, while armies stationed in small towns would rather retreat into their castles than face a strong enemy force. It is not at all unfeasible that Afonso lead a raid into the Gharb, and then, while retreating, was intercepted by sizable Almoravid troops intending to crush his army.
Despite the fact that the Christian Portuguese forces were strongly outnumbered, the Muslim armies were weakened by internal leadership problems, which led to Afonso Henrique's victory and subsequently his proclamation as King of the Portuguese, as Afonso I, with the support from his troops, vanquishing and slaying, so legend says, five Moorish kings.
The earliest accounts provide little detail. In one account the Moorish forces are led by five Kings (Life of St. Theotonius), while in another, the Muslim forces are under the command of one King, Ismar (Chronicles). In the more detailed Chronicle of the Goths, Ismar waited until Henriques penetrated into Moslem territory, then systematically sent his troops from Seville, Badajoz, Elvas, Évora and Beja against the Portuguese count. Further, the Portuguese forces were surrounded on the hilltop where they encamped, Ismar hosted knights, who were executed later by Henriques, and that the Moorish king escaped in defeat. Arab and Spanish accounts do not clarify the circumstances, and confuse the issue, identifying the Ismar as, alternatively, Ismar Abuzicri or Ismar and Abuzicri, with later historians identifying Abu Zakariya, the governor of Santarém, as the protagonist. It is also likely that the numbers were inflated by the chroniclers from a large-scale raid to grand assault by Muslim forces.
It was presumed that after his victory over the five Moorish kings, the nobles acclaimed Afonso Henriques as king. In reality, documents after his victory continued to refer to Henriques as Prince or Infante.
Immediately after the battle, Afonso Henriques is said to have called for the first assembly of the estates-general (Portuguese: Cortes Gerais) of Portugal at Lamego, where he was given the Crown from the Bishop of Braga, to confirm the Portuguese independence from the Kingdom of León. This was a patriotic falsification perpetuated by the clergy, nobility and supporters who promoted the Restoration of Portuguese sovereignty and the claims of John IV, after the Iberian Union. The documents that refer to the estates-general were "deciphered" by Cistercian monks from the Monastery of Alcobaça to perpetuate the myth and justify the legitimacy of the Portuguese crown in the 17th century. The author of this falsification was Oliveira Marques, and even in 1632 there were misgivings about the validity of the chronicler's account or the existence of the Cortes of Lamego

STORYLINE:
Mexico''s Supreme Court began debating on Tuesday an injunction filed by six Basque citizens arrested in July 2003 who would face terrorism charges if extradited back to Spain.
The Spanish government accuses the five men and one women of being members of the terrorist group ETA - charges the group has repeatedly denied. The injunction is thought to be the last legal recourse to block the group''s extradition to their homeland.
During three hours of debate, judge Genaro Gongora supported one of the elements listed in the injunction, that the 3-year-old arrest warrant Mexican authorities used to detain the group was invalid because authorities in Spain failed to provide evidence that the accused were involved in terrorist activities.
Gongora rejected arguments that an extradition treaty signed by Mexico and Spain forgoes the need to provide evidence when requesting arrest warrants between the two countries.
"Presenting an arrest warrant obligates our authorities to meet it while also meeting guarantees of liberty and judicial security," Gongora said. "It''s very difficult for me to understand why those guarantees were not met in this case."
Barbara Zamora, an attorney for the five Basque citizens, applauded Gongora''s argument.
"We are still positive that some judges who have a more of a purist''s perspective on this issue will join the discussion and make it more exhaustive, instead of allowing the issue to be resolved on the fast track".
The Supreme Court is scheduled to discuss the matter again on Thursday.
Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez has said Mexico is committed to extraditing the six Basques, despite their court appeals.
Those being held in Mexico City are Asier Arronategui, Ernesto Alberdi, Felix Salustiano Garcia, Juan Carlos Artola, Jose Maria Urquijo and Maria Asuncion Gorrochategui.
Most had been living for years in Mexico and at least one had been naturalised a Mexican citizen. They say that a return to Spain means they could be tortured and imprisoned without a fair trial.
ETA began an armed struggle for an independent Basque homeland three decades ago, and has been blamed for more than 800 deaths. The group announced a truce on March 22.
In addition to their suspected membership in ETA, Spain has charged the suspects with laundering money and receiving illicit proceeds from terrorist activities.

By Sunday night, about a quarter of the votes had been counted in the contest for the Salvadorean presidency.
On Monday, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal said Francisco Flores of the governing National Republican Alliance had won 51-point-9 per cent of the vote.
Coming in second, according to exit polls, was former guerrilla leader Facundo Guardado of the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, with 29-point-3 per cent of the vote.
Third was Ruben Zamora of the centre-left Democratic Center Union - also a former guerrilla leader.
The overwhelming victory for 39-year-old Flores means he will avoid a second round runoff against Guardado.
Turnout appeared to be below 40 per cent of the 3-point-1 (m) million registered voters - perhaps in response to lukewarm campaigns.
In 1994's presidential elections, turnout was about 55 per cent.
A former parliament speaker and one-time student of an Indian guru, Flores softened the often violent rhetoric of Salvadorean politics and indulged in a costly media campaign.
Flores' party - known by the Spanish acronym ARENA - made use of massive media advertisements to promote its candidate.
He has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts and a master's degree in philosophy from the World University in California.
Flores has pledged to attack El Salvador's crime and poverty, after opponents blamed ARENA for failing to ease these problems during the past two five-year presidential terms.
On Sunday night, Flores stopped just short of declaring victory, but said he was confident the final tally would go his way.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"The percentage for our party at this moment is 53. (Q Is that result final?) That's obviously going to be the trend up to the last ballot box."
SUPER CAPTION: Francisco Flores, Presidential candidate, National Republican Alliance
Supporters of Flores' party drove through the streets of the capital San Salvador, honking their horns, cheering and waving the party flag in celebration.
But after casting his vote, the leader of the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front and former guerrilla leader, Facundo Guardado, was far from despondent.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"Obviously, what has happened in this election is that compared to the 1994 elections the Arena Party has gone down a lot and the democratic options have increased their share of the vote by 12 per cent in relation to the 1994 elections."
SUPER CAPTION: Facundo Guardado, Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front
Guardado was hurt in the election campaign by a bitter nomination struggle against hard-line factions within the former guerrilla party.
Zamora, the Front's 1994 presidential candidate, now represents a coalition of small centrist and centre-left parties.
But the Front's supporters still found something to celebrate, despite victory for El Salvador's ruling rightist party.

The Battle of Ourique

SALVADOR: ELECTION RESULTS UPDATE: FRANCISCO FLORES WINS
SALVADOR: ELECTION RESULTS UPDATE: FRANCISCO FLORES WINS
Spanish/Nat
