India and Sri Lanka have resumed ferry services after a gap of almost 30 years. An Indian passenger vessel carrying VIPs and several hundred others arrived in Colombo from the southern port of Tuticorin today morning. It will leave for home later in the day. The Scotia Prince will travel twice a week each way. A Sri Lankan vessel will soon ply the same route. The luxury liner Scotia Prince, an US-origin ship, is 143 metres long, has nine decks and has restaurants, bars and casinos on it. A banquet hall on it can accommodate more than 200 persons. According to officials, fares range from a little over Rs 2000 per person in economy class to a more expensive Rs 14000 plus for a first class cabin with three berths. Each passenger can carry. Depending on the ticket, a passenger can carry up to 200 kg of cargo for free. The resumption of the ferry service is likely to give an impetus to tourism, especially Indian tourists coming to Sri Lanka, and trade. Statistics with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) show that the largest number of visitors to Sri Lanka in 2010 was from India. According to SLTDA figures, 111,129 Indians had come to Sri Lanka in 2010 excluding the month of December with a monthly average of nearly 10,000.

Alauddin Khilji started building the Alai Minar, after he had doubled the size of Quwwat ul-Islam mosque. He conceived this tower to be two times higher than Qutb Minar in proportion with the enlarged mosque. The construction was however abandoned, just after the completion of the 24.5-metre-high (80 ft) first-storey core; soon after death of Ala-ud-din in 1316, and never taken up by his successors of Khilji dynasty. The first storey of the Alai Minar, a giant rubble masonry core, still stands today, which was evidently intended to be covered with dressed stone later on. Noted Sufi poet and saint of his times, Amir Khusro in his work, Tarikh-i-Alai, mentions Ala-ud-din's intentions to extend the mosque and also constructing another minar. Ala-ud-din conceived a very ambitious construction programme when he decided to build the second tower of victory when he returned in triumph from his Deccan campaign. However, the Sultan died before even the first storey was finished, and the project was abandoned. Ala-ud-din felt compelled to increase even further the size of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. His scheme called for increasing the size of the enclosure four times, providing ceremonial entrance gateways on each side, and a great minar, twice the size of the Qutb. This is the unfinished base of the mammoth tower begun by Ala-ud-din Khilji intended to give competition to Qutb Minar. Qutub Minar also Qutub Meenar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Delhi, India. The Qutub Minar was constructed with red sandstone and marble, and is the tallest minaret in India, with a height of 72.5 metres (237.8 ft), contains 379 stairs to reach the top, and the diameter of base is 14.3 metres whereas the last storey is of 2.7 metres. The Construction was commenced by qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1192 and completed by Iltutmish. It is surrounded by several other ancient and medieval structures and ruins, collectively known as Qutub complex. Tradition assigns the erection of the Pillar to Anang Pal, whose name it bears, with the date 1052 C.E. Qutab Minar is the nearest station on the Delhi Metro. A picture of the minaret also features on the Travel Cards issued by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Let's learn more about the Qutab complex and the larger expanse of heritage around the Qutab Minar as opposed to only the spire that everyone now so easily recognizes with Delhi. Qutab complex, New Delhi Delhi, the capital of India, has been blessed with many important historical monuments. One such iconic monument located in Mehrauli, is the Qutub Minar, - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands 72.5 meters tall and has 379 steps to get to the top. The tower is made of red sandstone and marble. Suicide attempts and accidents from the top of this structure in the past have led to a ban on people entering the Qutub Minar since 1981. However, the nearby archeological area is still open to public. The construction of the Qutub Minar is full of mystery and enigma. Built over close to two centuries, from 1192 to 1386 it went through various stages of construction. Intended to celebrate the victory of Mohammed Ghori over Prithviraj Chauhan, Qutub-ud-din Aibak started its construction but only the base of the tower was completed during his lifetime. Qutub-ud-din's son-in-law, Shams-ud-din Iltutmish later added three levels to the tower during his reign from 1211 to 1236. The tower got its fifth and final floor from the ruler Firoz Shah Tughlaq who was in power from 1351 to 1388. Quwwat-ul-islam is another structure built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, which literally translates into the 'might of Islam'. It is also known by the names Qutub Mosque and the Great Mosque of Delhi. Its construction started simultaneously with that of the Qutub minar to immortalize the victory of the ruler over the Rajputs. The structure stands on a raised and paved courtyard with surrounding pillars that were later added by Iltutmish. The grand arches frame the path going towards the prayer hall and give the building a regal look. The mosque is in ruins today but its stylized pillars, geometric patterns, floral themes and Arabic inscriptions display its bygone glory. Later added to the mosque was its prim entrance the Alai Darwaza or the Gateway built by Alauddin Khilji, which is an important part of the Qutub complex. The Alai darwaza stands today as the formal gateway to the Quwwat-ul-islam mosque. It is believed to be the first building in India to employ Islamic architectural principles in its construction and decoration. Standing at a height, the monument has a free flowing cool breeze, making it a pleasant experience for visitors. Another engineering marvel in the Qutub complex is the Iron pillar of Delhi estimated to have been built as early as 912 BC. It is supposedly the strongest and the oldest edifice one can see. It has been in the open for years and seen many climatic changes. Strangely it has resisted corrosion for over 1600 years, which makes it a subject of study for Archeologists and Metallurgists. The monuments of the Qutub complex take you on an unwinding journey through various stages in Indian history. Conceived with a definite purpose, these monuments need more from us than just a visit. Witnesses to bygone eras these monuments are a symbol of the heroes of the past and the empires they wanted to build which is what defines us as a city or even as a nation today. The Siasat Daily 2015-01-27Thoothukudi, also known as Tuticorin, is a port city and a Municipal Corporation in Thoothukudi district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Thoothukudi is the headquarters of Thoothukudi District.
Thoothukudi is also known as "Pearl City". It is a commercial seaport which serves the inland cities of Southern India and is one of the sea gateways of Tamil Nadu. It is also one of the major seaports in India with a history dating back to the 6th century AD. It is located about 190 kilometres (118 mi) northeast of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and 590 kilometres (367 mi) south of Chennai.
Thoothukudi is part of the Pearl Fishery Coast, and is known for its pearl fishing and shipbuilding industries. Freedom fighter Vanchinathan killed the then Tirunelveli District Collector Ash during the freedom struggle in Maniyachi. To honour him, Maniyachi Railway station is called Vanchi Maniyachi Junction.
The major harbour of Thoothukudi is well known as a pearl diving and fishing centre. It is one of the oldest seaports in the world and was the seaport of the Pandyan kingdom after Korkai, near Palayakayal. It was later taken over by the Portuguese in 1548, captured by the Dutch in 1658, and ceded to the British in 1825. The lighthouse built in 1842 marked the beginning of the history of harbour development in the city. Thoothukudi was established as a Municipality in 1866 with Roche Victoria as its first chairman. It attained the status of Corporation on August 5, 2008 after 142 years of being a municipality.
