DEBATE : The latest capsizing of a boat of desperate migrants is only the beginning. All signs point to a tragic summer in the Mediterreanean. In five days, Italian authorities have taken in nearly 10,000 migrants, not counting the more than 400 feared dead in the most recent disaster. But that's unlikely to deter Erytreans, Syrians and others ready to risk their lives to get to Europe.... Europe where the talk's about how to keep them out.

The Mediterranean Sea seems to be turning into a migrant graveyard. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that over 800 migrants drowned on the high seas ove the weekend. According to the UNHCR, the victims were aboard a boat packed with people trying to reach Europe, but the vessel sank off Libya’s coast. The UNHCR has described the incident as the worst recorded in the Mediterranean. Based on reports, about 350 of the dead were from Eritrea. Others included nationals from Syria, Somalia, several other African countries and Bangladesh. Some of the victims were children aged between 10 and 12. The UN refugee agency says some 1300 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean in April.

A second Royal Navy warship has been deployed to the Mediterranean to aid the EU's fight against people smugglers.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD ) announced frigate HMS Richmond arrived to join patrols off the coast of Libya aimed at stopping human traffickers who risk the lives of refugees by taking them on the perilous journey to Europe by boat.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon vowed to "hit the traffickers hard".
HMS Enterprise is already stationed in the region to gather intelligence but was called into action last month to save nearly 400 migrants after Italian authorities were overwhelmed.
HMS Richmond's commanding officer will have powers to board and seize boats suspected to be used in people smuggling following the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution, the MoD said.
Mr Fallon added: " These new powers are an important step forward. We will now be able to board the boats and detain the smugglers.
"Sending HMS Richmond to join HMS Enterprise in the Mediterranean shows Britain's determination to tackle this trade in human misery at source."
HMS Enterprise replaced HMS Bulwark, which saved 3,000 lives in the Mediterranean, in July as part of a wider EU mission to detect and disrupt people-smuggling gangs.
More than 600,000 migrants have arrived in the EU by boat over the course of 2015 - around 475,000 landing in Greece and 137,000 in Italy - according to figures from the International Organisation for Migration.

On 19 September, the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) search and rescue ship Bourbon Argos rescued over 900 people from four different boats and brought them to safety in Sicily. Since May, MSF is operating on the Bourbon Argos to carry out search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship has 26 people on board (of which 14 are MSF staff), including an experienced search and rescue team as well as MSF medical staff. MSF calls for world leaders to ensure safe and legal passage, so that no one has to risk their lives making dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean.

More than 300,000 refugees and migrants have used the dangerous sea route across the Mediterranean so far this year with almost 200,000 of them landing in Greece and a further 110,000 in Italy.
The UN refugee agency, revealing the latest statistics in Geneva on Friday, said this represents a large increase from last year, when around 219,000 people crossed the Mediterranean during the whole of 2014.
"At the same time, some 2,500 refugees and migrants are estimated to have died or gone missing this year, trying to reach Europe. This death toll does not include yesterday's tragedy off Libya where numbers of deaths are still unconfirmed," UNHCR spokesperson Melissa Fleming told a press briefing in Geneva.
Last year some 3,500 people died or were reported missing in the Mediterranean Sea.
Fleming said that despite the concerted efforts of the joint European search and rescue operation under FRONTEX, which has saved tens of thousands of lives this year, the Mediterranean Sea continues to be the "deadliest route for refugees and migrants".
She added that in the last few days, even more people had lost their lives in three separate incidents.Description

Over the past 24-hours Italy has rescued some 4,500 migrants and refugees off the coast of Libya.
Italy’s coastguard says it’s coordinated 20 rescue operations involving numerous vessels which picked thousands from rubber boats and barges.
In one vessel, a woman’s body was found but the cause of her death remains unknown.
Another 335 people were picked up as part of a rescue mission coordinated by Greece and were being directed to a port in Italy to disembark.
Tens of thousands of people, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, have tried to cross the Mediterranean this year, often dangerously packed into small vessels unsuitable for the voyage.
Germany, Britain and Greece along with several aid agencies are also taking part in the European Union’s Triton rescue mission.

Italian Coastguard rescued 4,500 Migrants in Mediterranean

Italy's Coast Guard said more than 4,500 people were rescued Saturday off the Libyan coast, as calm seas triggered a rush of migrants trying to reach Europe in overcrowded boats and barges.
A Coast Guard statement said the agency coordinated 20 rescue operations, and that a woman's body was found in one inflatable boat. Greek rescuers and ships from Germany, Croatia and Britain were also involved, along with personnel from the medical group Doctors Without Borders.
"We started before first light this morning with our first rescue. We rescued two wooden boats and two rubber dinghies," emergency medical coordinator Simon Burroughs told AFP.
Saturday's migrant surge came after nearly a week of bad weather slowed the maritime migrant flow to a crawl. It also came as European leaders continued struggling to cope with the largest movement of humanity on the continent
Elsewhere, Austria braced Saturday for as many as 10,000 more migrants, after Hungarian authorities late Friday shifted tactics and began transporting thousands of migrants to the Austrian border.
In one instance, some 1,600 migrants on buses provided by Hungary arrived in the Austrian border town of Heiligenkreuz, where they boarded buses to Vienna and Austria's second-largest city, Graz.
"We see the pictures, how the situation is at other borders where people are treated badly," said Lieutenant Colonel Manfred Tschank, a local police commander. "We, the Austrian police, assisted by the Austrian army, have a slightly different approach. We try to calm the people down. We try to build an atmosphere of confidence, and we have succeeded so far. The people feel safer [in Austria] than in other countries. This is to our advantage but also to the advantage of these people."
Monitors say there is no sign of a letup of refugees crossing the Balkans on foot, seeking peace and security in northern and western Europe.
As the human wave continued westward, a senior European Union official told reporters that Balkan countries needed immediate help to cope with the crisis.
To that end, EU enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn said he had proposed $1.1 billion in aid to Turkey as part of a push to persuade migrants and refugees to stay in nearby countries.
"The very clear recent development has been the phenomenal number of people who have been motivated to move, some to Europe," O'Brien said. "And of course the response has been varied between those who will be able to be accommodated in Europe, and those would wish to have support much closer to their homes in and ... their neighboring states."

Royal Navy to tackle people smugglers in Mediterranean

A Royal Navy ship will take part in operations to target people smugglers in the Mediterranean sea, immigration minister James Brokenshire has said.
HMS Richmond will be deployed for two months to board and seize vessels off the coast of Libya, he said.
It will be the UK's contribution to an operation which is expected to be approved by the European Union.
Suspected traffickers will be taken to the nearest European port to be prosecuted in that country, he said.
BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Beale said the offer of the frigate, which will be officially made at an EU force conference on Wednesday, was a sign of a more aggressive response to the migrant crisis.
"However, Richmond would only operate in international waters - at least 12 miles off the Libyan coast," he said.
"That raises questions as to how effective this new phase of the mission will be."
Giving evidence to a Lords Home Affairs sub-committee, Mr Brokenshire said HMS Richmond would initially spend two months in the Mediterranean, with the possibility its deployment would be extended.
It is "appropriate to use military assets" because "we can't tolerate having crime on the shores of the EU", he said.
The frigate would be able to provide surveillance and reconnaissance over "vast areas", said the minister, assisting an Italian-led mission which had seen up to 4,400 people a day rescued from boats.
Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokeswoman said the European Council was expected to make a decision next month on whether, and when, to press ahead with operations to "board, search and seize" smugglers' boats on the high seas.
'No passenger service'
"We are effectively putting Richmond on the table so that if a subsequent decision is taken to get the operation kick-started, we would deploy it," she said.
Asked whether the ship would simply be ferrying migrants picked up from boats to Italy, the spokeswoman replied: "This is about boarding, searching and seizing smugglers' vessels. I don't think I have said once that it is a passenger carrying service, and it is not."
HMS Bulwark has already been involved in a search and rescue mission, saving the lives of migrants crammed into fishing boats and rubber dinghies as they made the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Libya to Europe.
More recently a survey ship, HMS Enterprise, has been carrying out surveillance, identifying migrant flows and gaining information on the activities of the people smugglers.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: "The Royal Navy has rescued thousands of people from peril but we've been clear we have to tackle the gangs behind this, which is why it's important the mission moves to the next phase."
In the latest developments, Hungary has closed its border with Serbia by building a new razor-wire fence.
Several other countries have tightened their border controls, including Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.
On Monday, Prime Minister David Cameron visited refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan, and pledged more aid money to help those countries deal with the surge.
He said a failure to boost spending for such camps would mean many more people would try to reach Europe.

Audio Newspaper
Although the world has been shocked by images of drowned refugee children washed ashore, international organizations and journalists have long been raising the alarm, warning that the Mediterranean has become a mass graveyard on Europe’s doorstep.
Tens of thousands of people have drowned in the Mediterranean over the past decades while fleeing to Europe in hopes of finding a better life away from their war-torn and poverty-stricken homelands in the Middle East and Africa. The number of deaths has considerably increased recently, as migrants resort to the more dangerous sea routes to reach Europe, various reports show. According to one recent EU estimate, four out of five illegal immigrants may have arrived on the continent by sea.So far this year, over 330,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe, the latest figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IMO) suggest. According to the intergovernmental agency, that number includes nearly 220,000 people who have landed in Greece, over 110,000 reaching Italian shores, and some 2,000 arriving in Spain. The total does not include the many that have arrived undetected. At least 2,636 people have died in the attempt, IMO said.

Among the rescued was 21 year old Joy who has never celebrated a birthday. She was kidnapped from her family at the age of 3 and raised as a maid in another household, where she was beaten, forced to work and never allowed out. With the help of a friend she escaped and fled to Libya.

War, economic crisis, political repression and environmental degradation are pushing increasing numbers of people to make the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe.
Since the beginning of the year alone it is believed that 1,700 people have perished at sea. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) believe that number might reach 30,000 by the end of the year if the current rate continues.
For May’s First Wednesday we will be bringing together a panel of experts to answer your questions about the unfolding crisis. We will be examining the root causes of the current situation and looking at the measures that need to be taken to avoid the 30,000 deaths the IOM predicts.
Chaired by executive editor of Monocle and host of Monocle 24’s The Foreign Desk, Steve Bloomfield.
The panel:
Maurice Wren is the chief executive of the Refugee Council, one of the leading organisations working with refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Previously he was director of Asylum Aid and held senior management roles at Shelter and the Housing Associations Charitable Trust.
Patrick Kingsley is The Guardian’s Egypt correspondent. For 2015, he is also the paper’s acting migration correspondent. He’s the winner of the Frontline award for print journalism. And he was named young journalist of the year at the 2014 British Press awards, new journalist of the year at the 2013 British Journalism awards, and new voice of the year at the One World media awards.
Cathryn Costello is Andrew W Mellon Associate Professor of International Human Rights and Refugee Law, and a fellow of St Antony’s College. From 2003 – 2013, she was Francis Reynolds Fellow and Tutor in EU and Public Law at Worcester College, Oxford, during which time she also completed her DPhil studies on EU asylum and immigration law.
Quentin Peel is Mercator senior fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs, Chatham House, and a freelance commentator for the Financial Times. In a long career at the FT he was correspondent in Berlin, Bonn, Brussels and Moscow. He was also Africa editor, correspondent in Johannesburg, foreign editor and chief foreign affairs columnist.

In a desperate bid to seek a better life in Europe, thousands of refugees and migrants leave the shores of Libya and cross the perilous Mediterranean Sea every month. Over 2,000 people have died making the journey in 2015 alone.
The routes to and journey through Libya are also dangerous, however, and since the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011, the country has struggled to achieve and maintain stability. Porous desert borders, rival fighters, and weak governance have left much of Libya in complete chaos.
With militias controlling large swathes of land, their attentions have turned to the people that cross their territories. The fighters assert they are bringing order to the country as they detain the refugees, yet these people’s lives have become valuable commodities to the militias as they try to solidify their positions in the country.
VICE News secured exclusive access to a camp outside Tripoli, run by a militia that has seized hundreds of migrants. Food is scarce, dehydration and disease is rife, and control comes in the form of whips and warning shots. The militia claims to have the migrants’ interests at heart, but what emerges is a very different story.
In part one of a two-part series, VICE News examines how Libya is struggling with the Mediterranean migrant crisis, where state-run detention centers are overcrowded and violent, and how government immigration controls are outsourced to militias, where they detain migrants en masse.

Here's another civilian or commercial MRE. This one is a Sure-Pak meal from Sopakco. The entree is Chicken with Tomatoes and Feta Cheese (also known as Mediterranean Chicken). Before the review I take a look at another meal made by the same company, packaged on the same day and featuring the same entree to see what (if anything) is different between the two. There was one very interesting difference that I knew about just by looking through the clear packaging. Genuine MREs always have pretty much exactly the same contents from case to case because of the specifications called for by the government. The commercially produced MREs have no such restrictions. They can either be exactly the same or vary greatly from meal to meal depending on what each company wants to put into them.
As far as the MRE itself, I've never had the Chicken with Tomatoes and Feta before, but have been looking forward to trying it. I've heard vastly differing opinions on this one, from it's the best MRE people have ever tasted to that it looks like puke and tastes disgusting. Not to spoil the surprise, but I really liked it. I think I might even go so far as to call it one of my favorite MREs. It has a pretty strong flavor (probably because of the feta) and I can see how it could be good for some and bad for others. I've tasted a few entrees lately that have been rather bland (and even needed to have salt added) so this was a nice change. It's pretty different from most MRE entrees, which is also nice in itself. This one (like many) is very high in sodium content (1,200 mg) and that probably has lot to do with the flavor. But, whatever the reason, I really enjoyed this one--despite the fact that it was four years old!
Chicken with Tomatoes and Feta Sure-Pak Meal from Sopakco:
-Chicken with Tomatoes and Feta Cheese
-Vegetable Crackers
-Cheese Spread
-Peanut Butter
-Corn Flakes Cereal Bar (2)
-Tropical Punch Beverage Base Powder
-Accessory Pack (Spoon, Napkin, Moist Towelette, Salt, Pepper, Instant Coffee, Creamer, Sugar)

In the 2nd century BC, artistic and cultural activities reached their heights in the cities of Ionia, a densely populated area on the cost of modern-day Turkey, as well as on a cluster of islands off the eastern Mediterranean. Priene, Miletus, Delos, "Slave Island", Kos and Rhodes, home of the famous Colossus, are just some of the places we will be visiting.
Ionia (Ancient Greek: Ἰωνία or Ἰωνίη; Turkish: İyonya) is an ancient region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey, the region nearest İzmir, which was historically Smyrna. It consisted of the northernmost territories of the Ionian League of Greek settlements. Never a unified state, it was named after the Ionian tribe who, in the Archaic Period (600--480 BC), settled mainly the shores and islands of the Aegean Sea. Ionian states were identified by tradition and by their use of Eastern Greek.
Ionia proper comprised a narrow coastal strip from Phocaea in the north near the mouth of the river Hermus (now the Gediz), to Miletus in the south near the mouth of the river Maeander, and included the islands of Chios and Samos. It was bounded by Aeolia to the north, Lydia to the east and Caria to the south. The cities within the region figured large in the strife between the Persian Empire and the Greeks.
According to Greek tradition, the cities of Ionia were founded by colonists from the other side of the Aegean. Their settlement was connected with the legendary history of the Ionic people in Attica, which asserts that the colonists were led by Neleus and Androclus, sons of Codrus, the last king of Athens. In accordance with this view the "Ionic migration", as it was called by later chronologers, was dated by them one hundred and forty years after the Trojan war, or sixty years after the return of the Heracleidae into the Peloponnese.
From the 18th century BC the region was a part of the Hittite Empire with possible name Arzawa, which was destroyed by invaders during the 12th century BC together with the collapse of the Empire. Ionia was settled by the Greeks probably during the 11th century BC. The most important city was Miletus (the Milawanta of Hittites). Several centuries later Ionia was the place where western philosophy began and was the homeland of Heraclitus, Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes. They were natural-philosophers of the Ionian school of philosophy and tried to explain the phenomena according to no-supernatural laws. They also searched a simple material-form behind the appearances of things (origin) and this conception had a great influence on the early archaic art in Greece.

The President of France pushed recovery in 2013, but we see now it is completely the opposite. Germany unemployment rate increased way more than expected. The FED /US government needs more debt so they are relaxing the student loan qualifications. Mortgage rates, origination and refinancing all declined, real estate bubble is popping. RBS decides to layoff employees in the mortgage trading business. The Government is worried and nervous, they want to censor people and remove freedom of speech. The USS Bantaan has been sent to Libya because the people are rising up and taking back the country. This ship could also be used for Syria to join in with the troops that are training in Jordan. Be prepared for a false flag.
