The Mafra National Palace is a monumental Baroque and Italianized Neoclassical palace-monastery located in Mafra, Portugal, some 28 kilometres from Lisbon. The palace, which also served as a Franciscan monastery, was built during the reign of King John V (1707–1750), in consequence of a vow made by the king in 1711, who promised to build a convent if his wife, the Queen Mary Anne of Austria, gave him descendants. The birth of his first daughter, the princess Barbara of Braganza, made the king initiate the construction of the palace. It was conveniently located for hunting in the nearby forests, and was usually a secondary residence for the royal family.
This vast complex is among the most sumptuous Baroque buildings in Portugal and one of the biggest buildings constructed in Europe in the 18th century. Designed by the German architect João Frederico Ludovice, the palace was built symmetrically from a central axis, occupied by the basilica, and continues lengthwise through the main façade until two major towers. The structures of the convent are located behind the main façade. The building also includes a major library, with about 40,000 rare books.[citation needed]
The basilica is decorated with several Italian statues and includes six historical pipe organs and two carillons, composed of 92 bells. At 40 000 m² it is one of the largest palaces in the world.

Anne of Austria (22 September 1601 – 20 January 1666) was Queen consort of France and Navarre, regent for her son, Louis XIV of France, and a Spanish Infanta by birth. During her regency (1643–1651) Cardinal Mazarin served as France's chief minister.
Born at Benavente Palace in Valladolid, Spain, and baptised Ana María Mauricia, she was the eldest daughter of Habsburg parents, Philip III of Spain and Margaret of Austria. She held the titles of Infanta of Spain and of Portugal and Archduchess of Austria. Despite having been a native of Spain, she was referred to as "...of Austria" due to the fact that the Habsburgs were originally from Austria.
Anne was raised mainly at the Royal Alcazar of Madrid. Unusually, Anne grew up close to her parents, and lived a rather calm and orderly life when compared to other royal children. Her parents were very religious, and she therefore was raised to be as well, often visiting monasteries during her childhood. In 1611, she lost her mother, who died in childbirth; despite her grief, Anne did her best to take care of her younger siblings, who referred to her with affection as mother.

Austria (
i/ˈɒstriə/ or /ˈɔːstriə/; German: Österreich [ˈøːstɐˌʁaɪç] (
listen)), officially the Republic of Austria (German: 
Republik Österreich (help·info)), is a landlocked country of roughly 8.47 million people in Central Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Germany to the north, Hungary and Slovakia to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The territory of Austria covers 83,855 square kilometres (32,377 sq mi) and has a temperate and alpine climate. Austria's terrain is highly mountainous due to the presence of the Alps; only 32% of the country is below 500 metres (1,640 ft), and its highest point is 3,798 metres (12,461 ft). The majority of the population speak local Austro-Bavarian dialects of German as their native language, and German in its standard form is the country's official language. Other local official languages are Burgenland Croatian, Hungarian and Slovene.
The origins of modern-day Austria date back to the time of the Habsburg dynasty when the vast majority of the country was a part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Austria became one of the great powers of Europe and, in response to the coronation of Napoleon I as the Emperor of the French, the Austrian Empire was officially proclaimed in 1804. In 1867, the Austrian Empire was reformed into Austria-Hungary.

The Mafra National Palace is a monumental Baroque and Italianized Neoclassical palace-monastery located in Mafra, Portugal, some 28 kilometres from Lisbon. The palace, which also served as a Franciscan monastery, was built during the reign of King John V (1707–1750), in consequence of a vow made by the king in 1711, who promised to build a convent if his wife, the Queen Mary Anne of Austria, gave him descendants. The birth of his first daughter, the princess Barbara of Braganza, made the king initiate the construction of the palace. It was conveniently located for hunting in the nearby forests, and was usually a secondary residence for the royal family.
This vast complex is among the most sumptuous Baroque buildings in Portugal and one of the biggest buildings constructed in Europe in the 18th century. Designed by the German architect João Frederico Ludovice, the palace was built symmetrically from a central axis, occupied by the basilica, and continues lengthwise through the main façade until two major towers. The structures of the convent are located behind the main façade. The building also includes a major library, with about 40,000 rare books.[citation needed]
The basilica is decorated with several Italian statues and includes six historical pipe organs and two carillons, composed of 92 bells. At 40 000 m² it is one of the largest palaces in the world.

On Saturday, 18 April 2015 the 7th edition of Eurovision in Concert took place in Amsterdam's Melkweg Concert Venue with the participation of 26 Eurovision acts, being 24 countries who compete at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Austria in May. Then Edsilia Rombley (Netherlands 1998 and 2007) as being the co-host of the concert together with Cornald Maas the Dutch TV Commentator of the Eurovision Song Contest and the charming winners of the Eurovision Song Contest 1985 for Norway - The Bobbysocks.
Before the concert in the evening there was a Press event where international and national media could meet the participating artists for interviews and photo sessions. Radio International was also represented and interviewed many of the artists.
In this clip see the interview with Ann Sophie who represents Germany with the song "Black Smoke" in the Grand Final.

On Saturday, 18 April 2015 the 7th edition of Eurovision in Concert took place in Amsterdam's Melkweg Concert Venue with the participation of 26 Eurovision acts, being 24 countries who compete at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Austria in May. Then Edsilia Rombley (Netherlands 1998 and 2007) as being the co-host of the concert together with Cornald Maas the Dutch TV Commentator of the Eurovision Song Contest and the charming winners of the Eurovision Song Contest 1985 for Norway - The Bobbysocks.
Before the concert in the evening there was a Press event where international and national media could meet the participating artists for interviews and photo sessions. Radio International was also represented and interviewed many of the artists.

Golda Meir (Hebrew: גּוֹלְדָּה מֵאִיר; earlier Golda Meyerson, born Golda Mabovich (Голда Мабович); May 3, 1898 -- December 8, 1978) was a teacher, kibbutznik and politician who became the fourth Prime Minister of the State of Israel.
Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. Israel's first and the world's third woman to hold such an office, she was described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics years before the epithet became associated with British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Former prime minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government"; she was often portrayed as the "strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people."
In 1974, after the conclusion of the Yom Kippur War, Meir resigned as prime minister. She died in 1978.
After Levi Eshkol's sudden death on February 26, 1969, the party elected Meir as his successor. Meir came out of retirement to take office on March 17, 1969, serving as prime minister until 1974. Meir maintained the coalition government formed in 1967, after the Six-Day War, in which Mapai merged with two other parties (Rafi and Ahdut HaAvoda) to form the Israel Labour party.
In 1969 and the early 1970s, Meir met with many world leaders to promote her vision of peace in the Middle East, including Richard Nixon (1969), Nicolae Ceausescu (1972) and Pope Paul VI (1973). In 1973, she hosted the chancellor of West Germany, Willy Brandt in Israel.
In August 1970, Meir accepted a U.S. peace initiative that called for an end to the War of Attrition and an Israeli pledge to withdraw to "secure and recognized boundaries" in the framework of a comprehensive peace settlement. The Gahal party quit the national unity government in protest, but Meir continued to lead the remaining coalition.
In the wake of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, Meir appealed to the world to "save our citizens and condemn the unspeakable criminal acts committed." Outraged at the perceived lack of global action, she ordered the Mossad to hunt down and assassinate the Black September and PFLP operatives who took part in the massacre. The 1986 TV film Sword of Gideon, based on the book Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team by George Jonas, and Steven Spielberg's movie Munich (2005) were based on these events.
During the 1970s some Russian-Jewish emigrants were allowed to leave the Soviet Union for Israel by way of Austria. When seven of these emigrants were taken hostage at the Austria-Czechoslovakian border by Palestinian Arab fighters in September 1973, Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky closed the Jewish Agency's transit facility in Schönau, Lower Austria. A few days later in Vienna, Meir tried to convince Kreisky to re-open the facility by appealing to his own Jewish origin, and described his position as "succumbing to terrorist blackmail". Kreisky did not change his position, so Meir returned to Israel infuriated. A few months later Austria opened a new transition camp.
Meir's story has been the subject of many fictionalized portrayals. In 1977, Anne Bancroft played Meir in William Gibson's Broadway play Golda. The Australian actress Judy Davis played a young Meir in the television film A Woman Called Golda (1982), opposite Leonard Nimoy. Ingrid Bergman played the older Golda in the same film. In 2003, the American Jewish actress Tovah Feldshuh portrayed her on Broadway in Golda's Balcony, Gibson's second play about Meir's life. The one-woman show was controversial in its implication that Meir considered using nuclear weapons during the Yom Kippur War.
Valerie Harper portrayed her in the touring company and in the film version of Golda's Balcony. Supporting actress Colleen Dewhurst portrayed her in the 1986 TV-movie Sword of Gideon. In 2005, actress Lynn Cohen portrayed Meir in Steven Spielberg's film Munich. Later on, Tovah Feldshuh assumed her role once again in the 2006 English-speaking French movie O Jerusalem. Hollywood's awards race just got serious. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced Oscar nominations for the 2013 Academy Awards on Thursday morning, adding a bit of levity to what will surely be taken quite seriously come Feb. 24, when MacFarlane hosts the actual awards broadcast.
In pre-announcement buzz, Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables"), Ben Affleck ("Argo"), Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln") and their films were all expected to receive nominations.
But MacFarlane did not read Bigelow, Affleck or Hooper's names when ticking off those nominated for Best Director. There was an audible gasp in the room as journalists realized that all three had been snubbed.
"Zero Dark Thirty" and "Argo" did, however, receive nods for Best Picture, where they'll compete with "Amour," "Django Unchained," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook."
Those who were nominated for Achievement in Directing: Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln"), David O. Russell ("Silver Linings"), Ang Lee ("Life of Pi"), Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts") and Michael Haneke ("Amour").
Plenty of familiar names dotted the acting categories. Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), Hugh Jackman ("Les Miserables"), Joaquin Phoenix ("The Master"), Denzel Washington ("Flight") and Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings") will compete for Best Actor. In the Best Actress column, Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings"), Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour"), Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts") and Naomi Watts ("The Impossible") are in contention. At just nine years old, Wallis is the youngest actress to ever be nominated in the category. Riva, 85, is the oldest.
Every nominee in the category of Best Supporting Actor has previously won an Oscar -- a fact Stone and MacFarlane jokingly acknowledged. Alan Arkin ("Argo"), Robert De Niro ("Silver Linings"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master"), Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln") and Christoph Waltz ("Django") will face off in that category. Amy Adams of "The Master" will compete with Sally Field ("Lincoln"), Anne Hathaway ("Les Mis"), Helen Hunt ("The Sessions") and Jacki Weaver ("Silver Linings Playbook") for Best Supporting Actress.
MacFarlane, who is best known for his off-camera work on "Family Guy" and "Ted," looked comfortable during the nominations announcement. And, in what surely came as a relief to viewers planning to tune in to the ceremony itself, he was pretty funny. He encouraged those who didn't recognize him to "pretend" he's Donnie Osmond. "I don't know why we don't wait until noon to do this, because the only people who are up right now are flying or in surgery," he said before inviting Emma Stone to join him on stage, "because there's nothing creepier than a guy standing by himself in Hollywood at five in the morning."
The Oscars are voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a group of some 6,000 working professionals in cinema. It's worth noting that the Golden Globes -- which take place Sunday -- are not voted on by members of the industry, but by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
