Ecuador (i/ˈɛkwədɔːr/ E-kwə-dawr, Spanish: [ekwaˈðor]), officially the Republic of Ecuador (Spanish: República del Ecuador, which literally translates as "Republic of the Equator"), is a representative democratic republic in northwestern South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Ecuador also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) west of the mainland.
What is now Ecuador was home to a variety of Amerindian groups that were gradually incorporated into the Inca Empire during the fifteenth century. The territory was colonized by Spain during the sixteenth century, achieving independence in 1820 as part of Gran Colombia, from which it emerged as its own sovereign state in 1830. The legacy of both empires is reflected in Ecuador's ethnically diverse population, with most of its 15.2 million people being mestizos, followed by large minorities of European, Amerindian, and African descendants.
Health care or healthcare is the maintenance or improvement of health via the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in human beings. Health care is delivered by health professionals (providers or practitioners) in allied health professions, chiropractic, physicians, dentistry, midwifery, nursing, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, psychology, and other health professions. It includes the work done in providing primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care, as well as in public health.
Access to health care varies across countries, groups, and individuals, largely influenced by social and economic conditions as well as the health policies in place. Countries and jurisdictions have different policies and plans in relation to the personal and population-based health care goals within their societies. Health care systems are organizations established to meet the health needs of target populations. Their exact configuration varies between national and subnational entities. In some countries and jurisdictions, health care planning is distributed among market participants, whereas in others, planning occurs more centrally among governments or other coordinating bodies. In all cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a well-functioning health care system requires a robust financing mechanism; a well-trained and adequately-paid workforce; reliable information on which to base decisions and policies; and well maintained health facilities and logistics to deliver quality medicines and technologies.

Healthcare, Hospitals and Costs in Loja Ecuador
Andean Health & Development is changing the health and well-being of the poor in rural Ecuador by providing quality medical care based on an innovative and proven model of local self-sustainability.
For the indigenous communities of Ecuador's mountainous Chimborazo province, life is defined by extreme poverty, lack of education and healthcare, and the challenge of farming on rough, rocky terrain. Every day, villagers are forced to walk long distances to access a source of clean water. The scarcity of clean water combined with a lack of hygiene education often leads to bacterial sickness, preventing children from attending school and adults from working. Free The Children's Adopt a Village projects in Ecuador are working to change lives through clean water projects. From building ground pipes to bringing clean water closer to homes, to constructing hand-washing stations and bathrooms next to schools, to giving community workshops on hygiene and sanitation, Free The Children is helping ...

A 37-minute ethnographic film, "From Our Strength: Two Births and Indigenous Politics in Cañar, Ecuador," co-produced by filmmaker Patricia Keith (Lewis-Clark State College) and anthropologist Suzanne Morrissey (Whitman College). The film takes place in the rural market town of Cañar, Ecuador, the site of a vibrant spoke of the Indian Rights Movement. In it the stories of mothers, midwives and nurses highlight the complex relationships between indigenous politics, social change, and health care choices.
Emergency visit to the IESS hospital in Quito. Our Ecuadorian health insurance isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Once again we bail out of the emergency waiting room in frustration after an entire wasted day.
Health care activist Jose Veloz, who lives in one of Quito’s poorest neighborhoods, is fighting to save Ecuador’s free public health care system. This Sunday, the fate of access to health care for millions of Ecuadoreans will be decided at the ballot box. Presidential candidate Lenin Moreno, representing the Citizens' Revolution, wants to maintain Ecuador’s free public health care system. Opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso, a wealthy right-wing banker, wants to privatize it and make it into a “free trade zone.” https://videosenglish.telesurtv.net/video/652225/private-vs-public-health-care-in-ecuador/
United Nations, April 2009 - Ten years ago, Ecuador, in South America, passed a law giving women free maternal health care. However, cultural barriers and traditional practices among indigenous peoples have kept many women from accepting it. A new culturally sensitive programme supported by the UN Population Fund is helping change that trend. Script: http://www.un.org/webcast/pdfs/unia1177.pdf
Ecuador Health Care with Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher - International Living Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher know Ecuador health care from first-person experience. Here they outline a health care system that is not only inexpensive, but can be of very high quality as well.
During her rural medical service in small communities in the highlands of Ecuador, Denisse discovered the potential of the public health system. From then on she decided to record the success and failures of the rural health system through her blog #ruraleando. Initially her blog contained her personal experiences as a rural doctor but is has become a tool that other rural medicine doctors use to bring light into the conditions they also face and how the health system can be improved. Denisse was born in Loja, a southern city of Ecuador. Since her childhood she felt great interest towards medicine and studies in her native town. She has been a doctor since 2013, the same year she began her rural medical service in small communities in the highlands of Ecuador. Here she discovered the...

Travel video about destination Ecuador. Ecuador is the smallest of the Andes’ states in South America and a land that derived its name from the Equator. A natural paradise with a living Indian culture and captivating colonial towns that was once part of the Inca Realm and later the sought-after possession of various European colonial powers. Quito, the "divine city", is the capital of Ecuador. Steep and narrow steps lead downhill to the Centro Historico in which many of its small buildings have been rebuilt several times due to devastating earthquakes. In 1536, Quito was newly founded and built on the ruins of an Inca town. West of Quito the edge of the extinct Pululahua Volcano is accessible by car. It is the largest volcanic crater in South America and the huge caldera with its steep ...

Travel video about destination Quito in Ecuador. Quito, otherwise known as the ‘divine city’, is the capital of Ecuador. It is a Spanish colonial city and Baroque gem surrounded by volcanic mountains, its historic centre having been built on the ruins of an Inca city. La Basilica is situated on a northern hill and is one of the city’s most monumental buildings measuring a hundred and forty metres long and thirty five metres wide. It is one of Quito’s earliest religious buildings and its construction began in 1892 when, a century later, it was consecrated by the Pope. The basilica is an architectural symbol of an autocratic Catholic church which dominated the country until the Liberal Revolution of 1925. The former Inca city subsequently became a splendid, yet strict, religious settleme...

I didn't know much about Ecuador except the Galapagos islands so as I arrived in Quito, my initial planned was to be in the country for 2 weeks and move on to Peru. What I did not realize though was the how much more to Ecuador than it is advertise. Did you know that there are more bird species in Ecaudor than in North America and Europe combined!? Did you know that Ecuador has one of the most concentrated numbers of volcano in an area!? Did you know that there are so many volcanos here, you can be busy hiking them for weeks!? Did you know that you can go off and hike 3 - 4 volcanoes right from Quito and came back and sleep in the city? Me neither! Ecuador is truly a hikers' and nature lover's paradise! Instead of spending only 2 weeks, I spent a whole month traveling around Ecuador. I ...

My friends and I spent the weekend in the Cotopaxi Province of Ecuador. It is home to the Cotopaxi volcano, which is the second highest summit in the country. We stayed at the gorgeous Secret Garden hostel, which had a guide take us trekking in the forest and along the streams to waterfalls. We also went horseback riding for six hours up to the top of a mountain for a closer look at the volcano.

Traveling to far away places has a different level of adventure for everyone. Some find the unknown to be exciting, willing to risk it all by not planning, with the daring-do and devil may care attitude only the most well centered and adaptable possess. On the other hand most like some semblance of order, while not giving in to the hum-drum, memorized drone of the disinterested tour guide spouting poor English at best. Going to the same places, seeing what everyone in the world has already seen, with little chance to really discover those unforgettable tidbits which create indelible, technicolor, 3D, forget the Kodak moments. Being savvy when you haven’t been to the place you’re going takes a little bit of time, and being in touch with someone who’s been there…done that…got the story wi...
The Galapagos are found 600 miles off the Western coast of Ecuador and is a fascinating and pristine eco-tourism destination. The number of people who can visit each year is limited and to go, you must be with a licensed guide and company, like Ecoventura, which offers 7-night cruise options on a 20-passenger boat. The small group atmosphere helps maintain what makes the Galapagos feel so special- you will never feel overcrowded. Groups follow a closely prescribed itinerary and explore 1-2 new islands each day. If you go, these will likely be some of the key highlights.
