Baku is located 28 meters below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world. Baku is also the largest city in the world located below sea level. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, which projects into the Caspian Sea. The city consists of two principal parts: the downtown area and the old Inner City (21.5 ha). At the beginning of 2009, Baku's urban population was estimated at just over two million people.[3] Officially, about 25 percent of all inhabitants of the country live in Baku's metropolitan area. Baku is divided into eleven administrative districts (raions) and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on islands in the Baku Bay and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 km (37 mi) away from Baku. The Inner City of Baku along with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. According to the Lonely Planet's ranking, Baku is also among the world's top ten destinations for urban nightlife.[4] The city is the scientific, cultural and industrial center of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there, including SOCAR, one of the world's top 100 companies and others.[5] The Baku International Sea Trade Port, sheltered by the islands of the Baku Archipelago to the east and the Absheron Peninsula to the north, is capable of handling two million tons of general and dry bulk cargoes per year.[6] Baku hosted the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and will host the 2015 European Games.

Sirtaki or Syrtaki Dance Performed on Azerbaijani Tar. συρτάκι Zorba. Greece & Azerbaijan. Tar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxA4rb4jtfA Sirtaki or Syrtaki Dance Performed on Azerbaijani Tar. συρτάκι Zorba. Greece & Azerbaijan. Tar. Şəhriyar İmanov. Shahriyar Imanov. Performed by: Shariyar Imanov (Tar) and State Chamber Orchestra of Azerbaijan named after Gara Garayev at "Megaro Muzikis" Cultural Complex in Athens, June 6, 2014. Sirtaki or syrtaki (Greek: συρτάκι) is a popular dance of Greek origin, choreographed by Giorgos Provias for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. It is not a traditional Greek folkdance, but a mixture of the slow and fast versions of the hasapiko dance. The dance, and the accompanying music by Míkis Theodorakis, are also called Zorbá's dance, Zorbas, or "the dance of Zorba". The name sirtáki comes from the Greek word: syrtos (from σύρω (τον χορό) which means "drag (the dance)"), a common name for a group of traditional Cretan dances of so-called "dragging" style, as opposed to pidikhtos (πηδηχτός), a hopping or leaping style. Despite that, sirtaki incorporates both syrtos (in its slower part) and pidikhtós (in its faster part) elements. Tar (Persian: تار) is a Persian and Azerbaijani long-necked, waisted instrument, shared by many cultures and countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Georgia, Republic of Azerbaijan, and other areas near the Caucasus region. The word tār (تار) means "string" in Persian, though it might have the same meaning in languages influenced by Persian. Tar is one of the most important musical instruments in Iran and the Caucasus. The formation, compilation, edition, and inheritance of the most authentic and most comprehensive versions of radif are all worked on tar. The general trends of Persian classical music have been deeply influenced by tar players. In 2012 art of Azerbaijani craftsmanship and performance art of the tar was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Azerbaijani tar or 11 string tar is an instrument in a slightly different shape from the Persian Tar and was developed from the Persian tar around 1870 by Sadigjan. It has a slightly different build and has more strings. The Caucasus tar has further one extra bass-string on the side, on a raised nut, and usually 2 double resonance strings via small metal nuts halfway the neck. All these strings are running next to the main strings over the bridge and are fixed to a string-holder and the edge of the body. Overall the Caucasus tar has 11 strings and 17 tones. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe on Youtube/Подписывайтесь на Ютубе: http://www.youtube.com/user/HaciChelebi http://www.youtube.com/user/BakuAndAzerbaijan On Facebook/На Фейсбуке: https://www.facebook.com/NagornoKarabakhAZ On Twitter/ В Твиттере: https://twitter.com/NagorNKarabakh Live Journal / На ЖЖ: http://NagornoKarabakh.livejournal.com/ VKontakte/ В Контакте: http://vk.com/NagornoKarabakh Odnoklassniki /Одноклассники http://www.odnoklassniki.ru/NagornoKarabakhAZ
IRIB 1 news repoirt on manufacturing of two cabin buses in east Azerbaijan province East Azerbaijan Province http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Azerbaidjan
Southern Azerbaijan has fertile soil and a pleasant climate and has for a long time been the destination of nomadic tribes. One such tribe was the Medes who are generally thought to be the ancestors of today’s Azerbaijanis. It is likely that Azerbaijani people settled on the Iranian mainland before any Persian tribes entered the area. A tribe of the Medes took control of the north-western part of Iran in what today compromises Azerbaijan in around the 6th Century BC. The Medes Empire ruled for 75 years before it became a part of the Persian Empire. The Asiatic Turks, the Seljuks, dominated the region in the 11th and early 12th centuries, and contributed much to the culture of the region. The Turkish influence and strong immigration into Persia placed Southern Azerbaijan at the centre of power in the country. The Azerbaijani Turks established their first united empire in 1501 as the Great King Ismail Khatai declared the Safavid Empire in Tabriz in the year of 1505. The Safavid were replaced by Nadir Shah Avshar and created the Avshars Dynasty. The Gajar (Qajar) dynasty was the last of the Turkish dynasties to rule Persia. Turkic states, such as the Gajar state, strongly affected the history of modern Azerbaijan. The Gajar dynasty ruled most parts of present day Iran, including Southern Azerbaijan, 1794-1925. During this time only men from the Azerbaijani people could claim right to the throne of the state of Gajar. The undercurrent dynasty seems to have been to unite all land previously ruled by their ancestors, the moves led to long lasting wars between the Gajars and Russia, as Russia quested to seize Southern Caucasus. Ultimately, these hostilities led to the division of Azerbaijan into a northern part ruled by Russia and a southern part ruled by the Gajar confederation, as agreed in the treaties of Gulustan (1813) and Turkmenchay (1828). Before the split the Azerbaijani boarders reached from what is today Derbet, the most southern city of Russia, to the province of Hamadan, south west of Tehran. During Russian rule of Northern Azerbaijan its territory decreased significantly, this later became the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 1925 when the Gajar state collapsed, Southern Azerbaijan was annexed into Iran and there was a massive move of non-Azerbaijanis to the cities of Gazvin and Hamadan where more than a half of the population are now of Azerbaijani descent. The Azerbaijan People’s RepublicOffice Building of the Government of South Azerbaijan in Tabriz. 1945-1946After the Second World War, Southern Azerbaijan became an independent state, the Azerbaijan People’s Republic, was established. During this year of independence, the Turkish language in schools and on radio stations became ingrained and Tabriz was established as an urban and cultural center. Independence, however, again only lasted for a short time, after a year the Soviet Union and Iran again fought bloody battles for the state in a process which killed approximately 35,000 people. After the crushing of the independent state, the Iranian government gathered all Turkish publications published during the republic and burned them in public. All people that had worked or supported the formation of the independent state were persecuted, and led to the movement for Southern Azerbaijani rights underground. After the so called revolution of 1979 and coming to power of terrorist regime of Persian Iran, assimilation policies were followed and intensified. Turkish Students were taught a foreign language of Persian in the schools. The very existence of Turks in the so called country of Iran was denied. As everything run by the Persian government, all schools, offices, hospitals, courts, TV and media, and every official and unofficial business were forcibly done in foreign language of Persian. South Azerbaijani economy is plundered by the Iranian terrorist regime, literally taking away all underground and above ground riches and leaving a desperate and poor situation for people, pushing the working forces out of South Azerbaijan to look for pity jobs in Persian areas. Over 70% of non-Persian population of so called Iran is deprived of their basic human rights by Persian terrorist regime. With the exception of Persian language, all other languages are banned and their territories occupied.
The Turks, living in southern Azerbaijan, which is lokated in Iran, have no minoriy rights. Their existence is denied since decades. And lies are spreaded that the Turkic Azerbaijanians are of Persian origin. The Assimilation Policy of Azerbaijan has started with the Pahlavi era and is going on till nowadays. In this clip, the Azerbaijanian scientist Dr. Gülare Yenisey is explaining the roots of the Persian Chauvinism and its racist ideology. For over 80 years, the role of the central government in Iran has been one of denying and dismissing ethnic and linguistic diversity in the country. Just as the Pahlavi regime focused on annihilation of cultural, linguistic, and ethnic differences in the country, so too the current Islamic Republic has continued with the politics of assimilation, exclusion, and racism. In recent days many Azeri towns and cities in Iran have, once again, become the revolutionary scene of anti-racist and anti-colonial struggle against Iran's racist and colonial order. The current movement of South Azerbaijan must be situated right at the heart of issues of racial/ethnic oppression and internal colonialism in an Iranian context. [...] The racist politics of the governing apparatuses have always been accompanied by ideological and discursive support of the majority of Persian writers, intellectuals and thinkers who, due to their belonging to the dominant group, have enjoyed the privileges of monolingualism, monoculturalism, and racism in the country. To this group must be added the assimilated segment of non-Persian writers and intellectuals whose passionate support for Persian racism has even surprised the Persians themselves. In fact, such individuals of Turkic origin as Mahmood Afshar, Iraj Afshar, Ahmad Kasravi and others have been among the founding fathers of this ugly racist system. The governing apparatuses, the dominant elite, and the farstoxicated intelligentsia have come together and sustained the structural bases of one of the most racist systems in the contemporary world. This naked racism which feeds on outdated and discredited Arayanist paradigms and racist theories of the 18-20th centuries Europe has outlived the Jim Crow segregationist system in America; it has survived Nazism, European fascism, and the Apartheid regime in South Africa. In effect, compared to its kind in Germany, Europe, the US, and South Africa, the Persian racism in Iran represents an amazing success story in terms of its durability, normalcy, and assimilatory capacity. The Turks, living in southern Azerbaijan (35 mio.), which is lokated in Iran, have no minoriy rights. The racist politics of the governing apparatuses have always been accompanied by ideological and discursive support of the majority of Persian writers, intellectuals and thinkers who, due to their belonging to the dominant group, have enjoyed the privileges of monolingualism, monoculturalism, and racism in the country. Aljazeera Reports From Lake Urmia, South Azerbaijan Iranian racist Refuses or Fails to Save Lake Urmiya; An environmental disaster is unfolding in South Azerbaijan, northwest so called Iran. South Azerbaijan always has been a prosperous and fertile land, with hard working and industrious Turkish inhabitants. At the turn of the century, Azerbaijan was called “the food basket of the region”. With Tabriz and Urmu at the centre, South Azerbaijan was world famous in commerce, prosperous economy, agricultural production and hand crafted products. The land and eventually people of South Azerbaijan were adversely effected by coming to power by coup d'etat of Persian racist and specifically anti Azerbaijani dictatorship of Reza Pahlavi. In 1920s and 30s hundreds of thousands of South Azerbaijani Turks were forcibly moved to Persian speaking provinces and areas of Iran. Most of which were killed in opposition or vanished during the process of forced migration. Millions were put to the process of forced assimilation to foreign language and culture of Persian. Turkish language was banned and every aspect of national prosperity for South Azerbaijanis such as economy, commerce, culture, education, and media were denied and prohibited. After twenty years of despotic anti Turkish iron rule of Reza Pahlavi, he was deposed by world powers led by England and US. Anti Azerbaijani policies of Iranian central government were followed by the deposed king's son until 1979. During the second Pahlavi's rule, more South Azerbaijani Turks lost their land, lives, and their very identity. South Azerbaijani Turks suffered more, and their land and people were degraded in every aspect of life. Step by stop the name of Azerbaijan was taken away from areas and provinces. Most of names of rivers, mountains, places, and cities were changed to Persian. Even naming children had to be in non-Turkish. In short, South Azerbaijan was de-Azerbaijanized and native Turks were de-Turkisized systematically. In 1945 by popular uprising, South Azerbaijan declared it's regional autonomy and in on short year of semi independence, many progress were achieved by the government of Prime Minister Pishevari in South Azerbaijan. In 1946 Iranian army occupied South Azerbaijan and burned most of crop resulting in great starvation and depression, forcing more people out of their homeland. From 1946 until 1979 the so called Islamic revolution, over one million South Azerbaijani Turks were incarcerated, tortured, exiled, starved to death, and killed by Iranian racist Persian-Shia government. In the last 32 years of so called Islamic rule, oppression, despotism were multiplied by the central government, and all anti Azerbaijani and Anti Turkish policies were intensified. Iranian apartheid government is literally destroying every resource of South Azerbaijani nation, making their land desolate, un-irrigable, and uninhabitable, and reducing people to mere desperate uneducated, and humiliated people of second degree in Iran. In the systematic and intentional process of destruction of South Azerbaijan by Iranian government, over 60 dams were construed on 30 rivers feeding Lake Urmu, reducing the water level to under 40 percent in the last ten years. Lake Urmu, being one of the world's four salt lakes is reduced to less than half in just a few years to mountains and deserts of sand, threatening to destroy the whole ecology of South Azerbaijan, eastern Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan in the north. All statistics and scientific data supports the fact that the Lake Urmu is dying because of intentional stoppage of the waters of rivers reaching it. Facts show that in few years the tsunami of millions of tons of salt will be creating salt storm destroying cites and lands, threatening over 15 million South Azerbaijani Turks living around Lake Urmu. It is noteworthy to mention that the most of the rivers were re-routed to avert the Lake Urmu, making dams to create electricity providing Armenia with the generated power. In mid August Iranian so called parliament rejected the speedy review of the situation of Lake Urmu. To protest the dire situation, South Azerbaijanis poured to streets of South Azerbaijani cities in peaceful demonstration, only to be beaten, arrested, tortured, and killed in the response. Iranian racist and terrorist regime's treatment of human rights activists and environmental activists resulted in more protests and popular uprising among ordinary people. Nowadays, every day, there are many peaceful protests in many cities by desperate people who are loosing their livelihood in their own homeland, and harsh and inhumane treatment of Iranian security forces, uniformed and plain-cloth. Pasdaran which is a world recognized terrorist organization and affiliate Basij plain-cloth forces are exacting havoc on South Azerbaijani cities, using even heavy weaponry and air forces.

This video is about ISTIQLAL Petition for right of education in mother language in South Azerbaijan This petition is regarding 35 million South Azerbaijani Turks whom their children have been deprived from their fundamental right of education in mother language of Azerbaijani by dictator regime of Iran. Regarding United Nations Conventions, Considering that one of the purposes of the United Nations, as stated in Articles 1 and 55 of the Charter, is to promote universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion. Under the provisions of article 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights concerning the rights of persons belonging to ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities, Under the provisions of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities (1992), States are required to take appropriate measures so that, wherever possible, persons belonging to minorities may have adequate opportunities to learn their mother tongue or to have instruction in their mother tongue. Similarly, indigenous peoples have the right to establish and control their educational systems and institutions providing education in their own languages, in a manner appropriate to their cultural methods of teaching and learning, as is provided in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007). Provisions for education in mother tongue are contained in several international conventions, namely, the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention (1989), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). After the collapse of Azerbaijani Qajar dynasty, in 1920s, South Azerbaijan was usurped by Iran, and ruled under Persian racist regimes of Pahlavi, and from 1979 under so called Islamic regime. For over 80 years Persian is made the sole official language of the country, and South Azerbaijani Turkish language is ousted, mocked, systematically distorted, and banned by the government. For over 80 years, natives of South Azerbaijan and speakers of South Azerbaijani Turkish and their children are forced to receive education in the foreign language of Persian. They are treated as second class citizens in their own native lands. They were objects of forced and mass migrations to the Persian areas (Persia). They were punished for writing or reading of articles, books, newspapers or creating any type of literature in South Azerbaijani Turkish. The first grade students who speak Turkish at home and normally it is their first time hearing a foreign language, are punished and beaten for speaking their “mother language” in classes. The so called revolution of 1979 did not improve the situation. South Azerbaijani Turks were kept under Iranian occupation, and their basic rights were denied to them. The Iranian undemocratic regime denying South Azerbaijani Turks’ children's right of education in their own "mother language". Present Iran is ruled by Islamic fascists and Persian racists. Under such a despotism of a minority Persians, non Persian majority of South Azerbaijani Turks, Turkmens. Belouchs, Arabs, and other ethnic groups are suffering. Presently approximately 35 million South Azerbaijani Turks are living in South Azerbaijan and other part of Iran. Social, economical, and cultural pressure on South Azerbaijanis are great. But this does not mean that the enemy of human rights and education and enlightenment has won. No, masters of deception and defenders of ignorance and darkness have not succeeded in the Persification of the peoples of the prison called Iran. In the last 31 years of Persian-Shia rule in Iran, thousands of South Azerbaijani civil activist who demand their children’s basic right of education in mother language, are kidnapped, arrested, held, tortured. Iranian apartheid regime's systematic policies against South Azerbaijani Turks are aimed at social, economic and linguistic genocide of South Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan has an ancient and historic cultural heritage. Aside from having been the first Muslim-majority country to have operas, theater and plays, Azerbaijan today is among the Muslim-majority countries where support for secularism and tolerance is the highest. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world, was established in 1918, but was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920. Azerbaijan regained independence in 1991. Shortly thereafter, during the Nagorno-Karabakh War, neighboring Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, its surrounding territories and the enclaves of Karki, Yukhary Askipara, Barkhudarly and Sofulu. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which emerged in Nagorno-Karabakh, continues to be not diplomatically recognized by any nation and the region is still considered a de jure part of Azerbaijan, despite being de facto independent since the end of the war. Azerbaijan has come under repeated international criticism for its record on human rights.
