"This project is allowing communities around Mount Kenya forest to use a source of energy that does not degrade the environment, that is because what they are used to is getting firewood from the forest for cooking and also they have been using kerosene and paraffin for lighting which contributes to climate change and emission of green house gasses. It also affects their respiratory systems, but now with the production of hydro electric energy the communities are able to use this energy for lighting in their homes and for running small scale businesses."

Farmers in the remote area of Embu in Kenya are using water runoff from Mount Kenya to supply their community's electricity needs.
Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme has helped the community to set up a hydro powered turbine in order to help them light their homes and run small scale businesses while not damaging the environment.
STORYLINE:
With an average rainfall of over 3000mm per year and a large amount of runoff water from the snows of Mount Kenya, the Embu district in central Kenya has an abundance of water.
However the region lacks infrastructure and many communities are not on the country's electric grid.
Near the town of Chuka, a number of people have come together to use hydropower to supply their electricity needs.
With the help of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)'s Small Grants Programme, which is managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the community has set up a hydro-powered turbine to supply power to 56 homes.
Nancy Chege, the national coordinator GEF Small Grants Programme says that this project is unique to Kenya as it is the first time that a community is producing and managing their own hydro electric power.
Currently, the water-driven turbine provides 20 kilowatts of power and the community hopes that it will soon reach its maximum capacity of double that amount.
