Architecture in the City: a tour of modern buildings in the Square Mile
"Clean Lines, Open Spaces: A View of Mid-Century Modern Architecture," a new documentary produced by AETN's Mark Wilcken, focuses on the construction boom in the United States after World War II. Sometimes considered cold and unattractive, mid-century modern designs were a by-product of post-war optimism and reflected a nation's dedication to building a new future. This new architecture used modern materials such as reinforced concrete, glass and steel and was defined by clean lines, simple shapes and unornamented facades. The documentary looks at examples of mid-century modern architecture around the state, from the University of Arkansas's Fine Arts Center designed by Arkansas native and internationally known architect Edward Durell Stone to the Tower Building in Little Rock, the Fulbright Library in Fayetteville that reflects the aesthetics of famous Chicago architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, and the abandoned Hotel Mountainaire, perfectly defining art moderne. Track four off Wilderness, go grab a copy on our Bandcamp! Links below. Lyrics: Spineless creature, crawling through life. You carve your history into the walls, scared of being forgotten. Blood pours from your lips as you feed, reflecting your notions of the world. Pride is a whore that you’ve clung to for many years. Take and take and take. Certainty is a mask worn to conceal fear. The mouth spews disease, with nothing to say. A flood of language, attempts to fill their ears and empty their minds. Meaningless motion, searching for truths where none will be found. Condescender, rediscover integrity. Find a place to sheath your sword and tear out your throat. I will not be shepherded into complacency. A land of bones long picked dry, like this kingdom underfoot you've become cold Malicious intent. Gold teeth bear a shit eating grin. I hope you stay confident, because in this burrow you were born, and in this burrow you will die alone. Dig deep, into the dark. Cave dweller, embrace the collapse. noodls 2015-03-14Modern architecture is generally characterized by simplification of form and creation of ornament from the structure and theme of the building. It is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely. In a broader sense, early modern architecture began at the turn of the 20th century with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.
The concept of modernism would be a central theme in these efforts. Gaining popularity after the Second World War, architectural modernism was adopted by many influential architects and architectural educators, and continues as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings into the 21st century. Modernism eventually generated reactions, most notably Postmodernism which sought to preserve pre-modern elements, while Neomodernism emerged as a reaction to Postmodernism.
