Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed optimism about the demographic outlook for Russia in Moscow on Thursday, saying that the mortality rate had fallen in 2014 while fertility rates had increased over the same period. Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "Moving on to the budget, we have a 0.5 percent deficit, which is still not very much. However we didn't let it grow higher. We also expect it for the current year at a larger but still acceptable level - 3.7 percent." Vladimir Putin, Russian President (in Russian): "No doubt positive demographic growth statistics should be mentioned as one of the positive results achieved in 2014. The fertility rate has grown while the mortality rate has declined. Average life expectancy has grown across the Russian regions. It's a very good sign. It means that we have an upward trend in the mood of the people." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To use this footage please contact the Ruptly Client Desk: cd@ruptly.tv Video ID: 20150416-024 ---------------------------------- Twitter: http://twitter.com/Ruptly VK: https://vk.com/ruptlytv Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Ruptly LiveLeak: http://www.liveleak.com/c/Ruptly Vine: https://vine.co/Ruptly Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/Ruptly Google Plus: http://google.com/+RuptlyTV YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/RuptlyTV DailyMotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/ruptly Video on Demand: http://www.ruptly.tv

democracynow.org - As the controversy over women's access to contraception continues, we look at women's access to safe, affordable and comfortable birthing options. Pioneering midwife Ina May Gaskin is the founder and director of the Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee. Last year, she won a Right Livelihood Award "for her whole-life's work teaching and advocating safe, woman-centered childbirth methods that best promote the physical and mental health of mother and child." She is the author of "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth," and most recently, "Birth Matters, a Midwife's Manifesta." "Insurance has incredible power ... that it did not have 70 years ago. It is the reason that doctors are not learning the reason to do breech deliveries any more. Its one of the huge reasons that we have very few midwives in this country," Gaskin says. "Midwives are a the bottom of the pile, basically, on getting coverage." Gaskin is also the founder of the Safe Motherhood Quilt Project, which seeks to draw public attention to the high maternal mortality rate in the United States. Mayor Vincent C. Gray and officials from the DC Department of Health (DOH) announce an infant-mortality rate of 7.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births -- another historic low for the District, after last year's announcement of 8.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The declining infant-mortality trends reflect the District's successful 10-year path to achieving its Healthy People 2010 objective of reducing infant mortality. "The rate of infant mortality is the best-known indicator of community's health status," Mayor Gray said. "It is encouraging to see the continued decline in infant mortality in the District, and I am confident that as we continue making long-term health investments for the city's most vulnerable populations, we will continue to see improvements in many health indicators." Several factors contributed to the District's 2011 reduction in infant mortality, including: An increase in public-health initiatives for expectant mothers; An 86.3 percent reduction in smoking among pregnant women; A 50 percent increase in mothers who breastfeed; Expansion of, and increased access to, the District's primary-care prenatal services; and An 8.6 percent reduction in teen births in the District. "The continued decrease of the District's infant-mortality rate is a reflection of the city's strong leadership and commitment to increase access to care and improve local programming," said Dr. Saul Levin, DOH Interim Director. "The Department of Health will continue to develop targeted programs to improve health outcomes to ensure every District resident lives their best life." 2011 Infant Mortality Report Highlights Highlights of the report include: The number of infant deaths decreased from 73 in 2010 to 69 in 2011, a 5.5 percent decrease. Infant-mortality rates declined in Wards 1, 3, 4, and 6 in 2011. The post-neonatal death rate decreased by 32.4 percent. The proportion of births to teenaged mothers (mothers aged 15 to 19 years) decreased by 8.6 percent between 2010 and 2011. Ongoing research and data collection have enabled DOH to identify factors such as low birth weight, lack of adequate prenatal care and prematurity as contributors to infant mortality in the District. DOH will use the 2011 infant-mortality data to develop hyper-local, targeted programs that address pre-conception health in the areas that saw an increase in mortality rates. DOH's Safe Cribs and I Am a Healthy DC Mom/Dad initiatives will continue to serve as the cornerstone of the Perinatal and Infant Health programs. The world has made tremendous advances in the past 15 years: over two billion people have gained access to drinking water, the maternal mortality rate has declined by nearly half, and enrollment in primary education for children in developing regions has reached 90 percent. However, there are over three billion people living on less than $2.50 a day, nearly 73 million young people are unemployed globally, and significant wage disparities persist between men and women around the world. There are still far too many circumstances where talent is held back by a lack of opportunity. CGI U students will one day lead the health care, finance, and education systems of tomorrow. How can they start now to ensure that the freedom to learn, to start or join businesses, and to access essential services is available to all, regardless of gender, nation, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or faith? This session will explore how students and universities, in partnership with the public, private, and civil society sectors, can: • Help strengthen and expand access to opportunity around the world, and ensure that the benefits of technology and innovation are shared with all • Remove barriers that hold back the hardest-to-reach populations MODERATOR President Bill Clinton, Founding Chairman, Clinton Global Initiative, 42nd President of the United States PARTICIPANTS America Ferrera, Actress, Producer, Activist Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Founder, Women Journalists Without Chains Paul Lorem, Student, Yale University Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General, United States Department of Health and Human Services

Young children who are infected with Ebola may be more likely to die from the virus than older children or adults who are infected, according to a new study. In the study, researchers examined Ebola cases in children younger than 16 during the current outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and compared them with adult cases. They found that the outbreak's death rate has been higher among younger children than among older children and adults. The disease has killed about 90 percent of infected children under age 1, and about 80 percent of kids ages 1 to 4 who have been infected. Older children who have been infected with Ebola may have a much better chance of surviving, as the death rate has been lower for children ages 10 to 15. Among children older than 15 and adults, the mortality rate was 65 percent. http://www.livescience.com/50255-ebola-death-rates-children.html http://www.wochit.com

It′s less common to see people with tuberculosis in developed countries than developing countries. Although Korea is considered a developed nation, it still has one of the highest tuberculosis mortality rates in the OECD. Kim Ji-yeon has more on this story. This patient, identified only by her surname Jung, recently found out that she has tuberculosis. She says she′s been coughing constantly since last fall... and often experienced shortness of breath. ″I′ve been stressed recently due to problems at home. I couldn′t eat very well.″ Jung is one of the 35-thousand patients who were recently diagnosed with tuberculosis in Korea. The country sees nearly eight times the number of TB cases, compared to the OECD average, and one of the highest fatality rates from the disease among member countries. More than 2-thousand 2-hundred patients died due to tuberculosis in 2013 alone. Doctors say it′s important to wash your hands thoroughly and detect tuberculosis in its early stages. They advise getting a medical check-up if coughing lasts for more than two weeks. ″Patients delaying treatment are highly likely to suffer from hemoptysis, or coughing up blood. Tuberclosis patients that enter the intensive care unit from cases like these... the mortality rate is close to 100-percent.″ In response, the Ministry of Health and Welfare is increasing efforts to eradicate the disease. It′s dispatching around four-hundred medical personnel to community medical centers across the country... so that each tuberculosis patient can get more intensive attention. The ministry is also cutting the cost of treatment. Starting in 2016, tuberculosis patients won′t have to pay a cent for medical help for the disease. Overall, the ministry expects to reduce the number of TB patients by half by 2020. Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.
South Korea appears to witness the highest incidence rate of tuberculosis (TB) among the world's wealthiest countries in recent years. The state-run Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Monday that the country's incidence rate of TB was 97 out of 100,000 people in 2013, compared with 12.9 persons, the average rate for the 34-member Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). South Korea's mortality rate of TB was 5.4 out of 100,000 in the mentioned year, which also topped the OECD list.

Bihar ranks fifth highest in terms of death of children below five years of age. The phenomenon is known as Under-5 Mortality Rate (U5MR). As many as 70 children per 1000 live births die every year in the state. Bihar still needs to work harder in terms of sex ratio as it has the fourth lowest sex ratio of 925 females against every 1000 males.
Even as government and other groups seek to lower infant mortality rates in the country, the rate in Kalokol area of Turkana county still has stakeholders worried. The high infant mortality rates in the area are attributed to the fact that in spite of the presence of an equipped health facility, many women still chose to give birth at home. As a result, key organizations have come together to create awareness to the local community about the importance of giving birth in a health facilities to minimize the deaths.

A group of ethnic community based health organizations, Health Information Service Working Group (HISWG), released the result of a one year study hoped to reveal the current situation of healthcare services and health condition of the local populace in Eastern Myanmar. The report summarizes the result of a large scale population-based health survey, which covered over 450,000 people. One of the key results the survey claim is that mortality rate in children under 5 in those regions, has increased more than two fold since 2012. The report adds that 70% of the local population in the studied region access healthcare services through ethnic community based healthcare organizations. This is due to lack of proper transportation infrastructure and language barrier with government led projects. The report is going be submitted to Ministry of Health, the UN and other international organization according to HISWG.

Yahoo Daily News 2015-04-17Mortality rate is a measure of the number of deaths (in general, or due to a specific cause) in a population, scaled to the size of that population, per unit of time. Mortality rate is typically expressed in units of deaths per 1000 individuals per year; thus, a mortality rate of 9.5 (out of 1000) in a population of 100,000 would mean 950 deaths per year in that entire population, or 0.95% out of the total. It is distinct from morbidity rate, which refers to the number of individuals in poor health during a given time period (the prevalence rate) or the number of newly appearing cases of the disease per unit of time (incidence rate). The term "mortality" is also sometimes inappropriately used to refer to the number of deaths among a set of diagnosed hospital cases for a disease or injury, rather than for the general population of a country or ethnic group. This disease mortality statistic is more precisely referred to as "case fatality".
