Just Dance will be Ubisoft's only previous-gen game moving forward

Just Dance is Ubisoft's only game to span console generations from now on, CEO Yves Guillemot said during an earnings call today. "On Just Dance, we will continue to bring old-gen console versions," Guillemot said. "But on the other products like Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, The Division and an unannounced franchise, we will not have old-gen versions." Just Dance 2015, the last game in the franchise, was released Oct. 21 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii and Wii U. During today's call, the company also revealed delays for Tom Clancy's The Division. Earlier today, during the reveal of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft owned up to the problems with Assassin's Creed Unity, which you can see in the video below.

Nintendo is profitable again

Nintendo's consolidated financial results (PDF link) for fiscal year 2015 shows a profitable company, reversing a trend of losses that dates back to 2012. Today, Nintendo disclosed net sales of $4.61 billion (5.49 billion yen) and an operating income of $207.83 million for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2015. Thanks to the profit, Nintendo decided to pay a year-end dividend (PDF link) to stockholders. In part, Nintendo's financial success is due to "depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar at the end of the period compared to the exchange rate at the end of the previous fiscal year," according to today's document. According to the company, 75.4 percent of its sales came from outside of Japan. Today's results reverse the corse of a disappointing few financial years for...

Details slip on Disney Infinity's next figures, both Star Wars and non-Star Wars

Mulan, Olaf from Frozen and Mickey Mouse are among the Disney Infinity 3.0 lineup according to a leak from a Chinese retailer, the same one that outed the silver Mario amiibo last week. They should join a wave of Star Wars figurines by the time that film launches at the end of the year, according to Polygon sources. Though both the retailer, Taobao, and a Disney Infinity enthusiast site that spotted the listing have removed all mention of the figures, information in the cached versions line up with how Disney has handled its toys-to-life franchise. There's more discussion of the leak in this fan forum as well. The figurines depicted included Mickey, Mulan and Olaf as well as Minnie Mouse, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron Legacy, and five characters from the upcoming Inside...

GameStop wants your old consoles and games for trade-in

GameStop will begin accepting old consoles, games and accessories for trade beginning April 25 in about 250 stores, a representative from the company told IGN. For now, those those stores are limited to the New York and Birmingham, Ala. markets. Those interested in boosting or unloading their classic game collections will be able to order through GameStop's website and through its "pick up at store" system. If accepting trade-ins for hardware as old as the Nintendo Entertainment System proves its worth, the company will make the program national "later this year." Beyond Nintendo's original console, GameStop customers will also be able to purchase and trade for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, the original PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and the Sega Dreamcast. "We will bring all of the...

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is making its way to the New nintendo 3DS, Wii U and Xbox One "soon," according to an update from developer Edmund McMillen. The game has players taking on the role of Isaac, the unfortunate son of a crazy zealot who locks him in the basement after receiving a message from God. The game plays as a top down roguelike. Our own Philip Kollar wrote that it was his most played game of the year. You can see the New 3DS version in action below.

Gone Home is no longer coming to consoles

Indie hit Gone Home is no longer scheduled to release on consoles, Fullbright developer Steve Gaynor told DualShockers. The first-person exploration title was first released to Windows PC in 2013 with plans to port the game to console; However, according to Gaynor this is no longer the case as the studio no longer has a publishing deal with its original publisher Majesco. The studio will instead focus its attention on its upcoming space exploration title Tacoma, slated for 2016. Last year it was confirmed that Gone Home would be headed to consoles by the end of 2014, without specifying which exact systems. In August of last year, Nintendo of America's senior manager of licensing and marketing Damon Baker revealed Gone Home would be coming to Wii U. However, publiser Majesco has...

Why do people choose to buy a PlayStation 4, an Xbox One or a Wii U?

Owners of different consoles buy them for very different reasons, according to new research. A new study from Nielsen asked console owners for the top reasons why they chose to buy a particular new machine. The answers that came back show a stark diversity for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U. For PS4 owners, the most important thing is "better resolution," followed by a Blu-ray player, the game library, and family preference. Xbox One owners cite brand as the top reason followed by "innovative features," system exclusives and "fun-factor." Owners of both system said they made the purchase due to "faster processing." Wii U owners were focussed on fun-factor, children, value and older games. Also interesting is the breakdown of prior console use among current generation...

Link beats out Mario as Nintendo's top-selling amiibo

The Legend of Zelda's Link is the top-selling Nintendo Amiibo figure, according to an investors briefing released earlier today. The NFC-equipped character is currently outselling long-time Nintendo favorite Mario, who takes second place in the company's list of top 10 highest selling Amiibo in North America. North America currently makes up roughly 63 percent of Amiibo sales to date, Nintendo confirms. Europe follows as the second highest contributor to sales, while Japan and Australia make up 11 percent and three percent, respectively. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has also announced plans to use Amiibo characters to unlock scenes from NES and SNES games that are associated with the particular character. Nintendo now aims to extent the functionality of its Amiibo with the release of...

Why don't today's kids love Sonic?

If you're a video game fan born sometime between 1970 and the early 1990s, there's a fair chance you played Sonic games when you were a kid or a young adult.Sonic was a 1990s superstar, an icon in an age of rapid progress and speed. But today's kids couldn't give a stuff about Sega's most famous mascot, as evidenced by the company's most recent financial results, announced earlier today. Sonic Boom for 3DS and Wii U sold fewer than half a million units, combined. Based on a kids TV cartoon, the Sonic Boom games were reviewed poorly and, in the case of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, released on a moribund console. But Sonic has become a byword for franchise over-exploitation and decline. Sonic comes off like a grown man, hanging around where the teenagers like to gather In the last 25...

Nintendo wants to make a comeback with cheaper software

Nintendo is aiming to stimulate sales by introducing more low-cost software, company president Satoru Iwata confirmed to The Nikkei. The games company plans to release remakes of older titles for the Nintendo 3DS system, as well as releases previously seen on smartphone devices. The plan is to offer content at prices as low as just a few hundred yen, according to Iwata. Free trials will also see an increase, with hopes to boost the name recognition of games and increase the likelihood of gamers purchasing the release in full. "We aim to return to profit levels more typical of the company in the year ending March 2017," Iwata said, with suggestions that shareholders should anticipate seeing profit around 100 billion yen ($845 million). Despite this, Nintendo will not be cutting game...

Blindfolded gamer goes undefeated through Punch-Out!! — including Mike Tyson

At Awesome Games Done Quick 2014, a blindfolded run through Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! made for some of the most spellbinding video games theater people would see the rest of the year. But the challenger, Sinister1, didn't defeat the title star, the game's ultimate boss. At the time Sinister1 noted that doing so was extremely difficult because Tyson's attacks are launched at random. Well, now another blindfolded Punch-Out!! artist, Jack Wedge, has pulled off an undefeated run through the game's entire roster, including a three-round decision over Kid Dynamite himself. Watch all 14 wins above. Wedge is playing Punch-Out!! on a Wii via emulation. He said he was advised by a colleague to "stop being a hero," and simply throw punches, block, and work time off the clock. Wedge didn't go for...

Nintendo's new YouTube scheme lets fans profit from video creations

Nintendo has launched the beta version of a new affiliate program designed to share advertising revenue with YouTube users posting videos that feature copyrighted content, the company confirmed today. The Nintendo Creators Program, which makes its official debut on May 27, will grant registered users 60 percent of the advertising revenue for videos containing Nintendo IP. The company will offer slightly more to channels fully dedicated to Nintendo content, offering up to 70 percent in ad revenue instead. Payments for the scheme will be made two months after monthly viewing numbers are counted and will be paid via PayPal. This is a long time coming. Every Mario game placed in chronological order

We've been playing games starring Mario since the '80s — dozens of them. That's a lot of adventures for an unassuming plumber to go on. Yet in all of this time, across all of these games, one question has never been answered: How do they all fit together? You may scoff at that question, but if Nintendo isn't going to answer it, you better believe fans will step up. One fan in particular, YouTube user Scorpigator Films, has pieced together a definitive Super Mario timeline. Why does Super Mario 3D Land take place in between the original NES games? Where does Luigi's Mansion fit? And what's up with Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and the many other spin-off games? Watch the video above for answers to all those questions and more. It's goofy, but actually really fun and clever. There's also an...

Conservative, stuffy old Nintendo and its weird habit of wild radicalism

Every big game company has its own personality, its own quirks and idiosyncrasies. Few companies are as quirky and idiosyncratic as Nintendo. One of Nintendo's characteristics is the fierce loyalty of its employees (and its fans), and their everlasting fealty, even after they have moved on. It's almost like a code. I have good friends who once worked there. No matter how much I beg and plead for tidbits of gossip, they just smile down at me, like I'm asking to meet the Tooth Fairy. If you walk through the offices at Nintendo of America, the desks are covered with knickknacks and toys, just like any other game industry place of work. The only difference is that they are almost all Nintendo-themed. It's kinda cute and it's kinda creepy. So it's rare for a former employee to come out and...
