Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition has secret exits — here's how they work

Watch in 60fps on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition hits North America tomorrow (or this evening  on the 3DS eShop, for the truly dedicated), and one of the Mario touches developer Gungho Online has added is secret goals: basically, hidden exits on certain stages that lead to entire new stages players would otherwise miss — a mechanic you might remember from a little game called Super Mario World. Above, we show you how to access World 1-5 through World 1-4's secret exit, plus explain the somewhat unintuitive strategy required to open it up. Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition launches May 22 on 3DS for $29.99.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker review: total package

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker is one of the most inspired and successful blending of multiple genres that I've ever seen come out of Japan. As a developer, Atlus' strength is largely in fairly traditional turn-based role-playing games, and Record Breaker definitely takes advantage of that. But that's only the bottom-most layer of gameplay. The turn-based battles are wrapped in a cloak of strategy gameplay, which is then clothed in a heavy narrative coat of choice-based visual novel stylings. What's especially impressive about Devil Survivor 2 is not just how it draws on these various, disparate styles of gameplay. Rather, I was thrilled by the way it ties them so tightly together and finds ways for each to interact with each other in a way that feels natural. ...

Xbox One outsells PS4 in April as Mortal Kombat X tops game sales

Xbox One outsold PlayStation 4 in the U.S. during April, according to NPD's monthly industry report on game and console sales. The top-selling packaged game was Mortal Kombat X. As is tradition, the two leading console makers released statements about their respective performances. NPD does not release actual sales numbers to the public, selling those to interested parties. "As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month," said Xbox marketer Mike Nichols. "Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent." Sony released a statement thanking fans for their support,...

Stretchmo is Nintendo's newest free-to-play experiment for 3DS

Nintendo released a new game in the Pushmo series today, Stretchmo for Nintendo 3DS. The follow-up to Pushmo, Crashmo and Pushmo World, Stretchmo is being sold in the 3DS eShop with a different pricing model. It's free to try, and players can purchase additional puzzles for a fee. Developed by Intelligent Systems, Stretchmo adds a new spin to the Pushmo puzzle series by adding a new mechanic; as Mallo, players push and pull blocks, and can now stretch certain blocks to extend each side, as they try to reach the goal flag. The first few levels of Stretchmo are free to play, and these early levels serve as a brief tutorial for the rest of the game. The other puzzles are sold piecemeal or in bundles. After completing the tutorial levels, players have the option to purchase the following...

Nintendo to unveil E3 plans tomorrow, May 13

Nintendo will reveal how it's handling E3 2015 tomorrow, May 13, at noon ET, Nintendo of America announced today on Twitter. Along with the announcement, the company posted a photo of a tall figure — presumably Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America — wearing a pink hooded tracksuit at the gym, and asked, "Who's training for E3?" You can see the tweet below. For the past two years, Nintendo has eschewed hosting a traditional press briefing at E3 in favor of more focused events. In 2013, the company held a press event in which it allowed members of the media to get hands-on time with its games lineup. Last year, the company went online with the Nintendo Digital Event, a livestreamed video program similar to its regular Nintendo Direct presentations. Along with that show,...

Press Start: Death and resurrection for comics, games and Schwarzenegger

When we looked back at the big stories from last week, we found a weird sense of coherency — and it all involves death and resurrection. The side that supports life includes SimCity creator Will Wright and his quest to build his next game … which isn't really a game. The cult favorite director Swery is also giving his latest game new life, as D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die heads to PC. Plus, the Assassin's Creed franchise will be reborn in London. But life implies death, and there was plenty of that, too. Marvel started killing dozens of comic books in Secret Wars. MachineGames released Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, which is a game about killing nazi zombies. And speaking of the undead, we published a review of Maggie, some surprisingly subversive Schwarzenegger cinema. It's not like we...

Nintendo is profitable again

Nintendo's consolidated financial results (PDF link) for fiscal year 2015 shows a profitable company, reversing a trend of losses that dates back to 2012. Today, Nintendo disclosed net sales of $4.61 billion (5.49 billion yen) and an operating income of $207.83 million for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2015. Thanks to the profit, Nintendo decided to pay a year-end dividend (PDF link) to stockholders. In part, Nintendo's financial success is due to "depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar at the end of the period compared to the exchange rate at the end of the previous fiscal year," according to today's document. According to the company, 75.4 percent of its sales came from outside of Japan. Today's results reverse the corse of a disappointing few financial years for...
