They were either sent to Pennhurst as court ordered or parents would drop them off with no love and to move on. Pennhurst was suppose to help these children get back into society but that failed. As years went on, the campus became overcrowded. They had about 2000 more patients then the campus was suppose to handle. They were also very under staffed and the state would not give them a lot of money. The patients were also abused physically and sexually. They would have their teeth removed if they bite, they would have fingers, toes, and jaws broken if they were bad. One patient lose an eye and another damaged. It turned into a place of abuse then a place of love and help. In 1986, Pennhurst was ordered to close. A former patient once released went to court and sued Pennhurst for awful living and abuse. That patient won the case and Pennhurst was ordered to close. When it closed, they kicked all the patients but a very few out on the street to live on their own. A lot of those patients who are still alive are homeless in the Spring City / Royersford Pennsylvania Area.

Pennhurst State School is known for it once beautiful campus but at the same time, it dark history. The school opened in the early 1900s for children and adults with mental disorders. Parents who wish to not take care of there mentally challenged children could leave them at Pennhurst. Pennhurst was designed to get the children and adults back out into society. However as years went on, the place started turning bad. Everything from patient abuse, medication overdose, dirty conditions, and neglect plagued this place until it was shut down in 1986. It remained abandoned for many years until a private owner bought it and is trying with money generated from tours and the haunted attraction to preserve the property.

That patient won the case and Pennhurst was ordered to close. When it closed, they kicked all the patients but a very few out on the street to live on their own. A lot of those patients who are still alive are homeless in the Spring City / Royersford Pennsylvania Area.

State schools, also known as public schools or government schools, generally refer to primary or secondary schools mandated for or offered to all children by the government, whether national, regional, or local, provided by an institution of civil government, and paid for, in whole or in part, by public funding from taxation. The term may also refer to institutions of post-secondary education funded, in whole or in part, and overseen by government.
This includes basic education, kindergarten to twelfth grade, also referred to as primary and secondary education, as well as post-secondary educational institutions such as universities, colleges, and technical schools funded and overseen by government rather than private entities.
State education is inclusive, both in its treatment of students and in that enfranchisement for the government of public education is as broad as for government generally. It is often organized and operated to be a deliberate model of the civil community in which it functions. Although typically provided to groups of students in classrooms in a central school, it may be provided in-home, employing visiting teachers,and/or supervising teachers. It can also be provided in non-school, non-home settings, such as shopping mall space.
