Land reclamation, usually known as reclamation, is the process to create new land from ocean, riverbeds, or, lake. The land reclaimed is known as reclamation ground or landfill.
In a number of other jurisdictions, including parts of the United States, the term "reclamation" can refer to returning disturbed lands to an improved state. For example, in Alberta, Canada, Reclamation is defined by the provincial government as "The process of reconverting disturbed land to its former or other productive uses." In Oceania it is frequently referred to as land rehabilitation.
The creation of new land was for the need of human activities.
Notable examples in the West include:
In the East:
One of the earliest and famous project was the Praya Reclamation Scheme, which added 50 to 60 acres (20.2 to 24.3 ha) of land in 1890 during the second phase of construction. It was one of the most ambitious projects ever taken during the Colonial Hong Kong era. Some 20% of land in the Tokyo Bay area has been reclaimed.Le Portier, Monaco and Gibraltar are also expanding due to land reclamation. The city of Rio de Janeiro was largely built on reclaimed land, as was Wellington, New Zealand.

.An investigation conducted by the Philippine military has shed light on the expansion of China's reclamation projects in disputed waters in the South China Sea.
NHK has obtained reconnaissance photos taken by the Philippine military near the Spratly Islands earlier this year. The waters are claimed by China, the Philippines, and other parties.
The photos show that China has begun reclaiming 2 new locations at the Spratly Islands -- one at Mischief Reef, another at Subi Reef.
Sources in the Philippine military say that together with 5 locations where China began reclaiming last year, at least one-square-kilometer waters in 7 locations have

The United States is taking a tough approach over China′s buildup of artificial islands in the South China Sea.
Holding a joint press conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Saturday,... U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he was very concerned about China′s massive land reclamation activities and pressed China to take actions to reduce tension.
Wang said China was unshakeable in its determination to safeguard its sovereignty,... but tempered his words by saying China and the U.S. have more common interests than differences.

US condemns China's land reclamation in South China Sea

Most international law experts believe that China's so-called "indisputable sovereignty" over its maritime claim in the South China Sea has little merit, and is illegal under the United Convention on the Law of the Sea. The United States said that China's expansive claim increases the risk of confrontation, undermines regional stability, and dims the prospects for diplomacy, and paved the way for "US pivot" to Pacific. Philippines declares the claim is illegal and violates Philippines' and other nations' sovereign rights under UNCLOS. The Vietnamese president said that it has no legal foundation and scientific basis and rejected China's assertion. China defends its claim citing historical basis, most of which were taken from its imperial archives and ancient records. It has recently intensified its claim in the South China Sea which many believe to be a "gunboat diplomacy" against its weaker maritime neighbors.
South China Sea is composed of three main areas: Spratlys, (the biggest); Paracel, (the next biggest); and Scarborough Shoal (the smallest). All of them are being claimed by People's Republic of China and Taiwan. Spratlys is also being claimed partly by the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia; Scarborough by the Philippines; and Paracel by Vietnam.
CORRECTION: Indonesia is not a claimant of the Spratlys. Natuna Islands, an Indonesian territory in the northwestern waters of Borneo and which China also claims is not part of the Spratlys.

The Palm Island, Dubai UAE - Megastructure Development
An awe-inspiring engineering feat, Dubai Palm Islands is definitely the largest artificial islands on earth. These Islands are three man made islands in the form of massive palm trees connected to the beaches of Dubai. The first island is the Palm Jumeirah, Jebel Ali Palm second and the third is the Palm Deira which is the biggest of them all. This artificial archipelago located off the coastline of United Arab Emirates in Persian Gulf.
Dubai islands project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed in an effort to maximize beachfront property. Dubai's palm tree-shaped resort island on land built from the sea will contribute 120 km of beaches. Aside from the construction of the ambitious expansion, there is also the problem of constructing a mini city, which consists of 4,500 high-end residential homes, miles of roads, luxurious hotels and many amenities that will require basic human resources including electricity, safe drinking water and many more. This enormous project will position Dubai as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
I will tell you why these islands have appeared and that they must satisfy. Dubai is an emirate that open sea about 50 km (an estimate) and the sites required for building projects are on the beach. To view course and especially to "park" in front of the yacht's property or even assembly.
Well when the beach was not available, and demand persists, the beach had invented. And it appeared artificial islands. Hence so sophisticated forms of the islands: they had to provide a larger opening to the ocean.
This new concept quickly caught on. 'Only a' product 'high-end, the latest wrinkle in the most creative developers metropolis. A new source of land, location of the trick of the planet Earth! The job went, the two islands were settled immediately, with mixed development, spectacular, exorbitant, and finally in Dubai's specific style ... In parallel to the World archipelago started building and other projects are still on the drawing board Nakheel, developer. But crisis compels us to winter a little ...
Where is the dream of similar islands: In Lebanon, wants to build a cedar shaped islands, the symbol of this country. Russia wants to try an island / an archipelago in Black in Sochi at the 2014 Olympics, at least that is speaking through the past years. Also in Japan there are several large airports built on artificial islands.
The Palm Islands are artificial peninsulas constructed of sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf by the Belgian company Jan De Nul and the Dutch company Van Oord.
The sand is sprayed by the dredging ships, which are guided by DGPS, onto the required area in a process known as rain-bowing because of the arcs in the air when the sand is sprayed. The outer edge of each Palm's encircling crescent is a large rock breakwater. The breakwater of the Palm Jumeirah has over seven million tons of rock.
The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago (islands) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in The UAE. The Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractors, Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation, were hired to complete construction. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira.
Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent. The settlements will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers. The Palm Islands are located off the coast of The UAE in the Persian Gulf and will add 520 kilometers of beaches to the city of Dubai.
The first two islands will comprise of approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand. The Palm Deira will be composed of approximately one billion cubic meters of rock and sand. All materials will be quarried in The UAE. Among the three islands, there will be over 100 luxury hotels, exclusive residential beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas.
The creation of the Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, the Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. The Palm Deira is planned to have a surface area of 46.35 square kilometers and was announced for development in October 2004.

China has dramatically ramped up its land reclamation efforts in the South China Sea this year, building artificial islands at an unprecedented pace to bolster its territorial claims in the disputed area, US officials said Friday.
The rapid construction of artificial islands in the strategic waters comes to 2,000 acres (800 hectares), with 75 percent of the total in the last five months, officials said.
"China has expanded the acreage on the outposts it occupies by some four hundred times," said a US defense official.
The United States did not endorse land reclamation by any of the countries with territorial claims in the South China Sea, but "the pace and scale of China's land reclamation in recent years dwarfs that of any other claimant," the official said.
The South China Sea is home to strategically vital shipping lanes and is believed to be rich in oil and gas. Washington is concerned China's efforts carry a military dimension that could undermine America's naval and economic power in the Pacific.
The commander of the US Pacific Fleet, Admiral Harry Harris, said in March that China is "creating a Great wall of sand."
US officials released the reclamation estimate as the Pentagon issued its annual report to Congress on the state of China's military, which repeated accusations that Beijing was staging cyber attacks to scoop up information on American defense programs.
The report also warned that China has made major strides with a range of satellites as well as anti-satellite jammers, saying it now had "the most dynamic space program in the world today."
- Deep channels and new airfields -
Previous reports have noted China's focus on cyber and space weapons but this year's document included a special section on the country's massive dredging and island building in the strategic South China Sea.
At four reclamation sites, China has moved from dredging operations to "infrastructure development" that could include harbors, communications and surveillance systems, logistics support and "at least one airfield," the report said.
The Chinese have excavated deep channels that could accommodate larger ships to the outposts, it said.
The ultimate purpose of the effort remains unclear but analysts outside China say Beijing is "attempting to change facts on the ground by improving its defense infrastructure in the South China Sea," the report said.
Unlike other countries making claims in the area, China at the moment does not have an airfield or "secure docking" at its outposts and the reclamation operations may be aimed at ending that disparity, it said.
The Pentagon report covered a period ending in December 2014 and it said China had reclaimed 500 acres in the disputed waters up to that point. But since then, China has conducted reclamation covering 1,500 acres, officials said.
Beijing asserts sovereignty over almost the whole of the South China Sea, including areas close to the coasts of other littoral states, using a nine-segment line based on one that first appeared on Chinese maps in the 1940s.
The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan all have overlapping claims.
Reclamation work by China's neighbors in the South China Sea has proceeded at a slower pace. Vietnam has reclaimed about 60 acres of land since 2009 and Taiwan has reclaimed about five acres near Itu Aba island.

Philippines calls for stop to China′s land reclamation in South China Sea
아세안
The Philippines is calling on other Southeast Asian countries to take a stand against China′s land reclamation in the disputed waters of the South China Sea.
Speaking at a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Malaysia on Sunday,... Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said that, if China′s construction of artificial islands on reefs claimed by other countries is allowed to be completed, then Beijing will impose its claim over more than 85 percent of the sea.
The Malaysian minister struck a slightly softer tone,... urging China to discuss its plans with ASEAN nations as he noted China was one of ASEAN′s most important trading partners.
China continues to defend the reclamation, saying it′s Chinese territory and the structures are for public service use and to support Chinese fishermen.

.An investigation conducted by the Philippine military has shed light on the expansion of China's reclamation projects in disputed waters in the South China Sea.
Sources in the Philippine military say that together with 5 locations where China began reclaiming last year, at least one-square-kilometer waters in 7 locations have already been developed.
At Fiery Cross Reef, long strips of shoal that were underwater in September have been totally reclaimed.
The Philippine military says the construction of a runway is underway on the newly reclaimed land, stretching 3 kilometers in length and 200 to 600 meters in width.
On Gaven Reef, Johnson Reef, and 2 other locations, several large complexes, such as a 6-story building, are being rapidly constructed.
Judging from the types of the facilities and recent Chinese maritime activities in the waters nearby, the sources say China's reclamation projects could be used for military purposes. They say China may begin opening these facilities year's end.
The Chinese government has said the development is conducted in waters under Chinese control, but the claim is meeting resistance from the Philippines, Vietnam, and other parties.
US officials have also expressed their concerns.
China's reclamation projects will likely deepen the tensions between China and other parties involved.

China claims almost the whole of the South China Sea, and has ignored the claims of countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.
Kerry will certainly receive a warmer welcome when he arrives in Seoul on Sunday for a two-day visit.
He will meet with President Park Geun-hye and his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se for discussions on their alliance and preparations for next month′s summit between Presidents Park and Obama in Washington.
