British Guiana was the name of the British colony on the northern coast of South America, now the independent nation of Guyana.
The area was originally settled by the Dutch at the start of the 17th century as the colonies of Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice. These three colonies were captured by the British in 1796; they were returned to the (Dutch) Batavian Republic in 1802, but were again captured by British forces a year later and were officially ceded to the United Kingdom in 1814, and consolidated into a single colony in 1831. The colony's capital was at Georgetown (known as Stabroek prior to 1812). Guyana went on to become independent of the United Kingdom on 26 May 1966.
There had been at least two unsuccessful attempts by the English to colonise the lands that would later be known as British Guiana during the 17th century, when the Dutch had established two colonies in the area: Essequibo, administered by the Dutch West India Company, and Berbice, administered by the Berbice Association. A third colony, Demerara, was established under the West India Company in the mid-18th century. Effective British control began in 1796 during the French Revolutionary Wars, at which time the Netherlands were under French occupation and Great Britain and France were at war. A British expeditionary force was dispatched from its colony of Barbados to seize the colonies from the French-dominated Batavian Republic. The colonies surrendered without a struggle, and initially very little changed, as the British agreed to allow the long-established laws of the colonies to remain in force.

A look at how the British undermined democracy in British Guiana when it ousted Dr Jagan
Mike Thomson investigates how Britain covertly manipulated the democratic process in its South American colony, then known as British Guiana, in the run-up to its independence in 1966. Mike discovers new documents showing that a conference held to determine the country's future was deliberately scuppered.
On the face of it, the conference, held in London in October 1963, was designed to confirm the constitutional future of British Guiana. Publicly Britain encouraged the country's Prime Minister Dr Cheddi Jagan – who had been fairly elected in 1961 – and the leader of the opposition, Linden Forbes Burnham, to agree terms for independence. However, documents reveal that, behind the scenes, the British were working to a different outcome – to ensure that agreement was never reached.
The British, under pressure from the Kennedy administration which feared Dr Jagan's Marxist leanings, were determined that he would not lead the country to independence. To this end they suggested a form of proportional representation in forthcoming elections, knowing full well that Dr Jagan would not agree to these terms as they would favour his rival. When the conference ended in deadlock, as the British hoped it would, proportional representation was duly implemented and the following year Dr Jagan was ousted, much to the relief of the superpowers.

Kennedy and British Guiana: A Cold War International History
Robert Anthony Waters Jr. (Ohio Northern University)
This paper will re-examine the Kennedy administration's relations with British Guiana and Premier Cheddi Jagan. It is a revisionist account that puts U.S. policy in the larger context of Cuban and Soviet intervention. The paper will do the following:
1) Trace Kennedy's views on British Guiana and explain the reasons for his sometimes tangled policy. Included in this assessment will be the probable role of the U.S.S. Oxford spy ship, which was sent to the Guianese coast shortly before Kennedy turned against Jagan and began to seek his ouster.
2) Examine British Guiana's impact on the "Special Relationship" -- a worried British official wrote that relations between the two countries were at a "tipping point," which the colony could topple if Macmillan did not agree to oust Jagan. Tied to the Special Relationship was British Guiana's impact on U.S. anti-colonial policy: While the U.S. pressured the British to remove Jagan, the British countered with suggestions for a quid pro quo in Kenya, Southern Rhodesia, and British Honduras, and even discussed the possibility of helping in British Guiana as a means to avoid participation in U.S. plans to intervene in Laos. This paper will analyze the success or failure of these colonial bargaining chips.
3) Investigate Jagan's charge that the United States had persuaded Venezuelan President Romulo Betancourt to demand changes in the country's borders as a means to pressure Jagan, and explicate the successful U.S. effort to pressure Israel against assisting the Guianese to create a national defense force based on the Israeli model.
4) Describe the Cuban and Soviet intervention in British Guiana, particularly during the anti-government general strike in 1963 and the pro-government sugar workers' strike of 1964.
5) Discuss the administration's effort to use a combination of political pressure and CIA support for intervention by U.S. trade unions in order to oust Jagan and pre-empt independent Guyana from joining the Communist Bloc.
6) Use Kennedy's post-missile crisis British Guiana policy to assess if his foreign policy underwent what Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., called a "Great Turning" away from Cold War confrontation in international hot spots.

Rare British Guiana stamp sells for a world record price at Sotheby's auction in New York.
Full Story:
A British Guiana One-Cent Magenta postage stamp from 1856, the only one of its kind to still exist, sold for a record $9.5 million (USD) at Sotheby's on Tuesday (June 17).
The hefty price, which includes the buyer's premium, makes the one-inch by one-and-a-quarter-inch stamp (2.5 cm by 3.2 cm) printed in black on magenta paper the most expensive stamp ever sold at auction, and the most valuable object by weight and size, according to the auction house.
An anonymous telephone bidder purchased the stamp during the bidding in the packed auction.
"It sets a brand new world record for a stamp obviously. So far above any prior price for a stamp. It's going to be a hard one to beat. And it probably won't be beaten until this stamp comes up for sale yet again in the future," said David Redden, the worldwide chairman of books and manuscripts at Sotheby's.
The previous record auction price for a single stamp was 2.87 million Swiss francs (about $2.2 million). It was set in 1996 for the Treskilling Yellow, a Swedish stamp that is a misprint of an 1855 shilling stamp in the wrong color.
The British Guiana stamp was sold by the estate of the late multimillionaire John du Pont, an heir to the du Pont chemical fortune, who died in prison in 2010 at the age of 72. Du Pont was serving a murder sentence for the shooting of David Schultz, a champion U.S. wrestler, in 1996.
Earlier this year, the Royal Philatelic Society of London re-authenticated the stamp, which du Pont, an avid stamp collector, purchased in 1980 for $935,000. The stamp's authenticity was previously verified in 1935.
The British Guiana One-Cent Magenta is one of the world's first postage stamps. In 1856 in British Guiana - now the republic of Guyana - the local postmaster asked a newspaper to print some stamps after supplies from Britain, where its stamps were printed, were delayed.
There are still a few four-cent stamps issued by the South American country, but this is the only one-cent. Until this year, the stamp had not been on public view since 1987, according to Sotheby's.
The stamp was discovered in 1873 by a 12-year-old schoolboy named L. Vernon Vaughan, who was living in British Guiana with his family. He found it among his family papers.
He kept it in his collection and later sold it to another collector in British Guiana. It surfaced in Britain in 1878 and was then purchased by Count Philippe la Renotiere von Ferrary, a noted stamp collector.
The count's collection was donated to the postal museum in Berlin and was later seized by France as war reparation from Germany and sold in 1922.
It was sold several times before du Pont purchased it. Part of the proceeds of the sale will go to the Eurasian Pacific Wildlife Conservation Foundation, which du Pont supported.

French Guiana (French: Guyane française; French pronunciation: [ɡɥijan fʁɑ̃sɛz]; officially just Guiana, French: Guyane) is an overseas department and region of France on the north Atlantic coast of South America. It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of less than 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 239,450 people in 2012[1] living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is by far the largest overseas region of France. As an oversea region, it is inside the European Union.
The addition of the adjective "French" in English comes from colonial times when five such colonies existed (The Guianas), namely from west to east: Spanish Guiana (now Guayana Region in Venezuela), British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana (now Amapá, a state in far northern Brazil). French Guiana and the two larger countries to the north and west, Guyana and Suriname, are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas and comprise one large shield landmass.
A large part of the department's economy derives from the presence of the Guiana Space Centre, now the European Space Agency's primary launch site near the equator. Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Guiana

When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1463, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848.
The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean.
Gwoka is the traditional music on Guadeloupe, but not only music and danse, but also the joy of life and a reminder of the time of slavery
-------
Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.
This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.
In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.
The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

A look at how the British undermined democracy in British Guiana when it ousted Dr Jagan

Republic of Guyana is a sovereign state on the northern coast of South America. Although Guyana is part of the Anglophone Caribbean, it is one of the few Caribbean countries that is not an island.[citation needed] The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), of which Guyana is a member, has its secretariat's headquarters in Guyana's capital, Georgetown.
Guyana was originally colonised by the Netherlands. Later, it became a British colony, known as British Guiana, and remained so for over 200 years until it achieved independence on 26 May 1966 from the United Kingdom. On 23 February 1970, Guyana officially became a republic. In 2008, the country joined the Union of South American Nations as a founding member.
