Of the many inspiring stories from the Olympics, U.S. Navy Lt. Brad Snyder's stands out. Snyder was blinded in Afghanistan in 2011 when an improvised explosive device exploded as he was trying to evacuate wounded people. After eight weeks of medical treatment, he spent about three months learning how to navigate daily activities with blindness, he told Swimming World Magazine. Despite his inability to see, Snyder became a medal winner in the Paralympic Games in London, winning two gold medals and a silver medal. http://www.paralympic.org/Athletes/Biographies "Being the person I was before becoming blind ... autonomous, very independent. ... I really want to get back to that as much as possible," Snyder said on Thursday. Next, he hopes to compete in the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016, and he was in Bloomfield, Connecticut on Thursday to choose a guide dog that will help him achieve that goal. Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, a non-profit based in Bloomfield, provides people who are blind with dogs that are specially trained to accompany them everywhere and help them perform everyday tasks that many take for granted. "The [dogs] fly with them on the plane, they're on the bus, the subway ... so they definitely get a special bond that regular pet owners don't have," Becky Cook, of Fidelco, said. On Thursday, Lt. Snyder went to Fidelco's main facility and walked around with two guide dogs to test them out. "I'm really looking forward to establishing a bond," he said. While Snyder has the support of family and friends, the 29-year-old said he missed being able to complete ordinary tasks on his own. "I like to get outside. I like to enjoy mountain biking and kayaking," Lt. Snyder said. He'll be able to do that in just a few weeks when he brings home a guide dog and Lt. Snyder said he'll be ready to hit the ground running. "My priority is to train for 2016 in the Rio Paralympics, and having a dog will allow me to walk to and from swim practice, get to and from the gym, and also be able to travel to swim meets across the country," Snyder said.

Thompson has a special place in the history of the Old Connecticut Path thanks to historian Ellen Larned who compiled the History of Windham County published in 1874, founded the Thompson library and was the first women admitted to membership of the Connecticut Historical Society. Larned's historical research was accompanied by a real treasure map, her "Map of Ancient Windham County". Larned's record of the stories handed down by the pioneer settlers and the route of the Old Connecticut Path provides a key to rediscovering the places along the Path. The 73 minute video is much more than a story about places. The presentation tells the larger story of families and what they did for our nation. The video expands upon the content of previous presentations to include the findings of the Connecticut Historical Commission study of the Old Connecticut Path. The Path travels through places of great natural beauty and historic significance in their own right. A guide to places to visit and walk along the Path is shared open the way for others to directly experience the splendor of the land that endures almost four centuries after the first pioneers traveled down the Path to Connecticut. Thanks to the Thompson Historical Society for sponsoring the Old Connecticut Path presentation, and the Thompson Public Library founded by Ellen Larned. As early as 1633-36, the migration from Massachusetts Bay at Boston/Cambridge west to Connecticut began following the Old Connecticut Path. John Oldham followed the Path to the Connecticut valley in 1633 followed by the Watertown, MA congregation in 1635 to settle Wethersfield, CT. Reverend John Wareham and the Dorchester congregation followed the Path in 1635 to settle Windsor, CT. Reverend Thomas Hooker and his entire congregation walked along the Old Connecticut Path for two weeks across the wilderness in 1636 from Cambridge, MA to establish Hartford, CT. Join me for a walk and use your imagination to experience the landscape traveled by the pioneers of the 1600s. Big News Network 2015-04-11Connecticut (i/kəˈnɛtɨkət/) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, and the state of New York to the west and the south (with which it shares a water boundary in Long Island Sound).
Connecticut is named for the Connecticut River, the major U.S. river that approximately bisects the state. Its capital city is Hartford. Much of southern and western Connecticut (along with the majority of the state's population) is part of the New York metropolitan area; three of Connecticut's eight counties are statistically included in the New York City combined statistical area, the same area is widely referred to as the Tri-State area. Connecticut's center of population is in Cheshire, New Haven County, which is also located within the Tri-State area.
Connecticut is the 3rd least extensive, the 29th most populous, and 4th most densely populated of the 50 United States. Called the Constitution State, Nutmeg State, and "The Land of Steady Habits", Connecticut was influential in the development of the federal government of the United States.
