Census 2000 was the first in U.S. history to use a national paid advertising campaign. This video contains a sample of the television ads that were broadcast that year. Targeting a general audience as well as select population groups, the ads encouraged the public to fill out their census forms. This campaign was a key component in the success of Census 2000 - two-thirds of all households mailed back the census form that year, reversing a decades-long trend of lower response rates.

What is Race (United States Census)?
A documentary report all about Race (United States Census) for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment.
Race and ethnicity in the United States Census, defined by the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the United States Census Bureau, are self-identification data items in which residents choose the race or races with which they most closely identify, and indicate whether or not they are of Hispanic or Latino origin (the only categories for ethnicity).

"In a nation where, by the year 2020, some 40 percent of children sitting behind school desks will be students of color, it has become increasingly important to understand and honor the diversity of our communities. The 2000 U.S. Census highlights significant shifts in our state’s ethnic makeup—trends that will undoubtedly shape the way Oregon plans for the future.

Ice Cube, Eddie Murphy, Cuba Gooding, Jr. - Christmas in Compton ( Los Angeles, California ) Movie
Compton is a city in southern Los Angeles County, California, United States,[10] situated south of downtown Los Angeles. Compton is one of the oldest cities in the county and on May 11, 1888, was the eighth city to incorporate. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 96,455.[11] It is known as the "Hub City" due to its geographic centrality in Los Angeles County.[10] Neighborhoods in Compton include Sunny Cove, Leland, Downtown Compton, and Richland Farms. The city is generally a working class city with some middle-class neighborhoods, and is home to a relatively young community, at an average 25 years of age, compared to the American median age of 35.
Since the 1980s, the city of Compton has become well known in American popular culture due to hip hop groups and rappers originating from the community, including gangsta rap group N.W.A. and rapper Kendrick Lamar. The city of Compton as well as southern Los Angeles County in general is known for its black and Hispanic gangs, including the Bloods, the Crips and Sureños, which all originated in the Los Angeles area.
Some episodes of the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air took place in Compton because Will Smith's friend, Jazz, lived there.[18] Many rap artists' careers started in Compton, including YG, N.W.A. (Eazy-E, MC Ren, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube), DJ Quik, Nishant, Jeeves, The Game, Kendrick Lamar, and Compton's Most Wanted. In their lyrics, they rap about the streets and their lives in Compton and the areas nearby. Many well-known NBA players attended high school in the city as well. Arron Afflalo attended Centennial High School; DeMar DeRozan attended Compton High School; and Tayshaun Prince, Tyson Chandler, Brandon Jennings, Cedric Ceballos and the late Dennis Johnson attended Dominguez High. Actor/comedian Paul Rodriguez Sr. also attended Dominguez High.[19]
Although Compton was formerly thought of as a primarily black community, this has greatly changed over the years and now Latinos are the largest ethnic group in the city. A possible reason for this misconception is, despite the shift in population, many African American professional athletes and rappers are originally from Compton. Also, African Americans continue to dominate local politics, holding most elected positions in the city. Although an inner suburb of Los Angeles, Compton has seen an increase of middle-class residents in the last few years, due to its affordable housing despite the portrayals of Compton in the media, which are typically exaggerated. With the influx of immigrants and the demographic shift in ethnic population, it was after the 2000 U.S. Census Latinos were recognized as the majority.[20]
Compton has a growing Pacific Islander, Filipino, and Vietnamese
In 1784, the Spanish Crown deeded a tract of over 75,000 acres (300 km2) to Juan Jose Dominguez in this area. The tract was named Rancho San Pedro. Dominguez's name was later applied to the Dominguez Hills community south of Compton. The tree that marked the original northern boundary of the rancho still stands at the corner of Poppy and Short streets.[citation needed] The rancho was sub-divided and parcels were sold within the Californios of Alta California until the lands were ceded after the Mexican-American war in 1848. American immigrants acquired most of the rancho lands after 1848.[clarification needed]
In 1867, Griffith Dickenson Compton led a group of thirty pioneers to the area. These families had traveled by wagon train south from Stockton, California in search of ways to earn a living other than in the rapid exhaustion of gold fields. Originally named Gibsonville, after one of the tract owners, it was later called Comptonville. However, to avoid confusion with the Comptonville located in Yuba County, the name was shortened to Compton.[10] Compton's earliest settlers were faced with terrible hardships as they farmed the land in bleak weather to get by with just the barest subsistence. The weather continued to be harsh, rainy and cold, and fuel was difficult to find. To gather firewood it was necessary to travel to mountains close to Pasadena. The round trip took almost a week. Many in the Compton party wanted to relocate to a friendlier climate and settle down. But there were only two general stores within traveling distance, one in the pueblo of Los Angeles, the other in Wilmington, so they eventually made the decision to stay put.[10]
By 1887, the settlers realized it was time to make improvements to the local government. A series of town meetings were held to discuss incorporation of their little town. Griffith D. Compton

"In a nation where, by the year 2020, some 40 percent of children sitting behind school desks will be students of color, it has become increasingly important to understand and honor the diversity of our communities. Demographic changes in Oregon may not be as dramatic as they have been in states like California and Texas, but they are remarkable nonetheless. The 2000 U.S. Census highlights significant shifts in our state’s ethnic makeup—trends that will undoubtedly shape the way Oregon plans for the future.
Dr. Jesus Carreon, president of Portland Community College, has been studying these demographic changes for the past decade. This week, Dr. Carreon will explain the implications of our growing ethnic populations, our aging baby boomers, and other demographic groups. In addition, Carreon will discuss how Oregon’s diverse citizenry will likely shape the workplace and economy, education, and health care.
Join us this week and hear how Oregon’s newest pioneers are altering the political, social, and economic landscape of our state."

Hawaii Island, more specifically the Puna District on the east side of the island, has been ground zero for human cases of angiostrongyliasis, or rat lungworm disease for the past 10-15 years. While cases have been reported from other areas of the island, including Kona, and from other islands, including Maui and Oahu, more than 90% of cases originate in the Puna District. Serious cases are occurring at an unacceptable rate and have resulted in death, permanent disability, and loss of income and quality of life. Diagnosis currently involves a spinal tap at a hospital. The total number of cases goes underreported partly due to difficulty and expense of diagnosis, infected visitors returning home, and victims seeking alternative medical treatment.
Puna is a rural, agricultural district, and has the 3rd lowest per capita income level in the state (40% less than the state average in 2000), the 3rd highest unemployment rate, and the highest percentage of families relying on food stamps in the state. According to the US Census (ACS, 2009-2013) of the 41,732 people in the Puna district, 5,241 have no health insurance (12.6%). The district contains 45% of total subdivided lots in Hawaii County (Hawaii Island). From 2000-2010 the population of Puna increased by 66%. Many of the large subdivisions do not have the infrastructure for county water. It is estimated that 75 % of Puna residents rely on rainwater catchment systems for their household use, and it has been shown that catchment water can be a potential source of infection for the disease.
Rat lungworm disease can and has resulted in severe neurological trauma for those individuals having a serious infection. The disease is caused by a parasitic worm, a microscopic nematode, and infection is acquired by ingestion of the worm either from food (raw produce), by water, or potentially from skin contact. The worm requires two different types of hosts; rats, and snails and slugs. Hawaii has 45 established invasive slugs and snail species, all of which are capable of being a host for the parasite, and three invasive rat species. Besides being carriers of disease, invasive snails and rats have a negative impact on agriculture and native plant and animal species, including Hawaii’s endemic snails. Studies have shown invasive slugs and snails to be carrying very high parasite loads, and yet to date no recent control efforts for these hosts have been made by county, state or federal agencies on Hawaii Island.
While the Center for Disease Control states serious cases of angiostrongyliasis are rare, Hawaii Island has had an abnormally large number of serious cases for a relatively small population. The variables thought to be involved in causing this high number of cases are yet to be defined, but may include the high use of catchment systems as a household water source and the establishment of invasive semi-slug populations to Puna in 2004. This slug is a very effective carrier and has an infection rate (over 75%) and its arrival coincides with the increase in the number of cases. More federal funding needs to be delegated for education, to raise public awareness of the disease, for research to determine the factors involved in the high rate of disease incidence, better diagnostic and treatment methods, and for control of invasive snails and rats that carry the disease.

'FEATURES ACTIVITY OF ESKIMO SCOUTS IN THE ALASKA NATIONAL GUARD AS THEY OPERATE FROM FISHING VILLAGE OF SHISHMAREF, NEAR ARCTIC CIRCLE. '
'A century ago, Alaska, our most northern frontier, was popularly called "Seward's Folly." The top of the world seemed remote then. Today, the polar concept has changed our ideas of distances and now that which was once considered a wasteland, is of great military importance and a vital link in our preparations to insure security. The mission of our Army in Alaska is to repel any aggressive action, and be prepared to hit back. An important segment of our force which is fulfilling that purpose, are men who were born above the Arctic Circle -- the Alaskan Scouts. They, along with the rest of our military establishment, undergo constant training and reevaluation in this land where nature herself is hostile -- Alaska.'
Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

Shishmaref (SHISH-muh-reff) (Qiġiqtaq in Iñupiaq; Russian: Шишмарёв) is a city and village in the Nome Census Area, Alaska, United States. It is located on Sarichef Island in the Chukchi Sea, just north of the Bering Strait and five miles from the mainland. Shishmaref lies within the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. The population was 563 at the 2010 census...
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 square miles (19 km2), of which, 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) of it is land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) of it (61.62%) is water.
Shishmaref was named in 1821 by explorer Lt. Otto von Kotzebue, of the Imperial Russian Navy, after Capt. Lt. Gleb Shishmaryov who accompanied him on his exploration.
Sarichef Island (on which Shishmaref is located) is part of a dynamic, 100 km-long barrier island chain that records human and environmental history spanning the past 2000 years; the oldest subaerial evidence for the formation of this system is about 1700 14c yr bp (see References, below). Erosion at Shishmaref is unique along the islands because of its fetch exposure and high tidal prism, relatively intense infrastructure development during the 20th century, and multiple shoreline defense structures built beginning in the 1970s.
Global warming
The effect of global climate change upon Shishmaref is sometimes seen as the most dramatic in the world.[6] Rising temperatures have resulted in a reduction in the sea ice which serves to buffer Shishmaref from storm surges. At the same time, the permafrost that the village is built on has also begun to melt, making the shore even more vulnerable to erosion. In recent years the shore has been receding at an average rate of up to 10 feet (3.3 m) per year. Although a series of barricades has been put up to protect the village, the shore has continued to erode at an alarming rate. The town's homes, water system and infrastructure are being undermined...
Culture
Shishmaref is a traditional Inupiaq Eskimo village. Residents rely heavily on a subsistence lifestyle, hunting and gathering much of their food. Primary food sources include sea mammals such as oogruk (bearded seal), other seals and walrus, fish, birds (such as ptarmigan), caribou and moose. The village is well known in the region for its high-quality seal oil and fermented meat.
It is known for its Native art. Local carvings of whalebone and walrus ivory are sought after by galleries in Alaska and the Lower 48.
Shishmaref was home to one of Alaska's most-beloved dog mushers. Herbie Nayokpuk, known as the "Shishmaref Cannonball", died in December 2006. He finished the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race numerous times, including a second-place finish.
It is sometimes referred to as "the friendliest village in Alaska." Researchers, journalists and the occasional tourist visit Shishmaref, and the city has acquired a reputation for being a gracious host...

The United States Department of State (DoS), often referred to as the State Department, is the United States federal executive department responsible for international relations of the United States, equivalent to the foreign ministry of other countries. The Department was created in 1789 and was the first executive department established.
The Department is headquartered in the Harry S Truman Building located at 2201 C Street, NW, a few blocks away from the White House in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Department operates the diplomatic missions of the United States abroad and is responsible for implementing the foreign policy of the United States and U.S. diplomacy efforts. The Department is also the depositary for more than 200 multilateral treaties.
The Department is led by the Secretary of State, who is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate and is a member of the Cabinet. The current Secretary of State is John Kerry. The Secretary of State is the first Cabinet official in the order of precedence and in the presidential line of succession.
The House of Representatives and Senate approved legislation to establish a Department of Foreign Affairs on July 21, 1789, and President Washington signed it into law on July 27, making the Department of Foreign Affairs the first federal agency to be created under the new Constitution.
This legislation remains the basic law of the Department of State. In September 1789, additional legislation changed the name of the agency to the Department of State.
These responsibilities grew to include management of the United States Mint, keeper of the Great Seal of the United States, and the taking of the census.
Most of these domestic duties of the Department of State were eventually turned over to various new Federal departments and agencies that were established during the 19th century. However, the Secretary of State still retains a few domestic responsibilities, such as being the keeper of the Great Seal and being the officer to whom a President or Vice-President of the United States wishing to resign must deliver an instrument in writing declaring the decision to resign.
In 1978, the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) formed an office to use excess military and government aircraft for support of foreign nations' counter-narcotics operations. The first aircraft used was a crop duster used for eradication of illicit crops in Mexico in cooperation with the local authorities. The separate Air Wing was established in 1986 as use of aviation assets grew in the war on drugs.
Following the events of the September 11 attacks, and the subsequent war on terror, the Air Wing went on to expand their operations from mainly anti-narcotics operations to also support security of United States nationals and interests, primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In 2011, the Air Wing was operating more than 230 aircraft around the world, the main missions still being counter narcotics and transportation of state officials.

Member of the Japanese diaspora are nikkei (日系), or nikkeijin (日系人) - Japanese emigrants & their descendants. Since the end of World War II, Japan has sent few emigrants to other lands. The young nikkei in North, Central & South America are mostly 4th, 5th, 6th & higher generations. The majorities of these young persons are only part Japanese.
Using data from the 2000 US Census (http://goo.gl/QlNIqe), 30.7% of all people in the US who reported Japanese ancestry in 2000 were mixed.
Using data from the 2010 US Census (http://iurl.no/zyiy6), 41.5% of all people in the US who reported Japanese ancestry in 2010 were mixed.
The 2020 US Census will likely show that over 50% of all people in the US who report Japanese ancestry in 2020 will be mixed.
The number of individuals of full Japanese ancestry in the US FELL from 796,700 in 2000 to 763,325 in 2010, likely due to elderly deaths.

Griffith D. Compton

Dr. Jesus Carreon, president, Portland Community College
