We have put together a series of videos with Dr. Erin Bigler for a better understanding of the anatomy of the brain and the function of anatomy and what happens when a brain is injured.
Dr. Erin Bigler, Brigham Young University, and Attorney Gordon Johnson discuss brain anatomy and the different parts of the brain that can be damaged when subjected to trauma.
In this video Dr. Bigler and I are talking generally about two concepts that are fairly important in the general overview understanding of the brain. The first is the two different hemispheres that there are of the brain, and the second would be the difference between gray matter and white matter.

Grey matter (or gray matter) is a major component of the central nervous system, consisting of neuronal cell bodies, neuropil (dendrites and unmyelinated axons), glial cells (astroglia and oligodendrocytes) and capillaries. Grey matter contains neural cell bodies, in contrast to white matter, which does not and mostly contains myelinated axon tracts. The color difference arises mainly from the whiteness of myelin. In living tissue, grey matter actually has a grey-brown color, which comes from capillary blood vessels and neuronal cell bodies.
Grey matter is made up of neuronal cell bodies. The grey matter includes regions of the brain involved in muscle control, sensory perception such as seeing and hearing, memory, emotions, and speech.
Grey matter is distributed at the surface of the cerebral hemispheres (cerebral cortex) and of the cerebellum (cerebellar cortex), as well as in the depths of the cerebrum (thalamus; hypothalamus; subthalamus, basal ganglia - putamen, globus pallidus, nucleus accumbens; septal nuclei), cerebellar (deep cerebellar nuclei - dentate nucleus, globose nucleus, emboliform nucleus, fastigial nucleus), brainstem (substantia nigra, red nucleus, olivary nuclei, cranial nerve nuclei) and spinal grey matter (anterior horn, lateral horn, posterior horn).

Redneck Rampage playthrough, using Gog.com version with custom DOSBox settings, with upscaled 640x480 instead of 800x600 to get better frame rates. Played on the 4th skill level "Killbylly". This game was developed by Xatrix Entertainment, which became Gray Matter Studios... they created true gems like Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Kingpin. Then they merged with the team well known as 'Treyarch'. After all this time, I finally managed to get my hands on this game and finish it, without getting stuck looking for a smallish skeleton keys. Having mapped for the Build engine in the past, I must say that the level design in this game is top notch and deserves a lot more credit for its spot on real-place-representation, texturing and shading. Hanging Band - Cambered Bar Squats w/ 2 Sec Pause
I programmed Cambered Bar Squats with the 2 sec pause in the bottom, but saw Mark Dugdale do the Hanging Band Technique, and figured I'd give it a try. I really love the 2 second pauses with squats, it forces you to explode, but to make sure you are exploding with MUSCLE not just bouncing off the bottom. Cambered bar adds a little more fun, and reduces shoulder strain. I'm not really a fan of the hanging band technique, or bandbell work for squats, back work, etc. I think it shines for pressing of all kinds, like overhead, bench variations, etc. But your legs stuck to the floor, are fairly stable, so it loses most of the effect. -
Shoulder Giant Set
Start with DB-6 Ways (a Meadows creation) which is a lateral raise, brought to a front raise position, to an overhead position, and then reversed, all in one continuous motion. USE LIGHT WEIGHTS. I am using 5lb dumbbells here. It is about constant tension, not huge weights. Go into lateral raises from there till burnout, followed by band over and backs. These are going to light the shoulder girdle up. Finish them with an isometric lateral raise. You are trying to LIFT the rack with your shoulders. I do mine into my pin-and-pipe safeties in my rack, but get creative. After your shoulders are burning, this isometric is going to be nasty. -
Band Crossover Drop Set to Cambered Bar Push-Ups
Without a crossover/functional trainer set up, my bands do some double duty. Focus on the peak contraction, and try to rotate your hands to feel a stronger contraction in the pec. Go from a stronger band, to lighter, to lighter, etc. Went to cambered bar push-ups, to get a nice stretch in the pecs at the bottom. Be careful here, and keep the tension in your pecs, don't get loose and strain anything. -

Redneck Rampage playthrough, using Gog.com version with custom DOSBox settings, with upscaled 640x480 instead of 800x600 to get better frame rates. Played on the 4th skill level "Killbylly". This game was developed by Xatrix Entertainment, which became Gray Matter Studios... they created true gems like Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Kingpin. Then they merged with the team well known as 'Treyarch'.
After all this time, I finally managed to get my hands on this game and finish it, without getting stuck looking for a smallish skeleton keys. Having mapped for the Build engine in the past, I must say that the level design in this game is top notch and deserves a lot more credit for its spot on real-place-representation, texturing and shading. Had fun with this one, except for its high difficulty sometimes.

Jugado en el 4º nivel de dificultad "Killbilly". Este juego fue desarrollado por Xatrix Entertainment, que luego pasó a ser Gray Matter Studios... casa que desarrollo juegazos como Return to Castle Wolfenstein, o Kingpin. Luego se unieron al equipo bien conocido como 'Treyarch'.
Después de todo este tiempo, he conseguido echarle el guante y terminarlo, sin quedarme atascado buscando una llave minúscula. He de decir que habiendo mapeado para el motor Build en el pasado, el diseño de los niveles de este juego es de lo mejorcito y no ha llevado toda la atención que merece por su representación de lugares "reales", texturizado y sombreado. Me lo he pasado bien, excepto por su elevada dificultad en ocasiones.

Then they merged with the team well known as 'Treyarch'.
After all this time, I finally managed to get my hands on this game and finish it, without getting stuck looking for a smallish skeleton keys. Having mapped for the Build engine in the past, I must say that the level design in this game is top notch and deserves a lot more credit for its spot on real-place-representation, texturing and shading. Had fun with this one, except for its high difficulty sometimes.

I programmed Cambered Bar Squats with the 2 sec pause in the bottom, but saw Mark Dugdale do the Hanging Band Technique, and figured I'd give it a try.
I really love the 2 second pauses with squats, it forces you to explode, but to make sure you are exploding with MUSCLE not just bouncing off the bottom. Cambered bar adds a little more fun, and reduces shoulder strain.
I'm not really a fan of the hanging band technique, or bandbell work for squats, back work, etc. I think it shines for pressing of all kinds, like overhead, bench variations, etc. But your legs stuck to the floor, are fairly stable, so it loses most of the effect.

Start with DB-6 Ways (a Meadows creation) which is a lateral raise, brought to a front raise position, to an overhead position, and then reversed, all in one continuous motion. USE LIGHT WEIGHTS. I am using 5lb dumbbells here. It is about constant tension, not huge weights.
Go into lateral raises from there till burnout, followed by band over and backs. These are going to light the shoulder girdle up.
Finish them with an isometric lateral raise. You are trying to LIFT the rack with your shoulders. I do mine into my pin-and-pipe safeties in my rack, but get creative. After your shoulders are burning, this isometric is going to be nasty.

Without a crossover/functional trainer set up, my bands do some double duty. Focus on the peak contraction, and try to rotate your hands to feel a stronger contraction in the pec. Go from a stronger band, to lighter, to lighter, etc.
Went to cambered bar push-ups, to get a nice stretch in the pecs at the bottom. Be careful here, and keep the tension in your pecs, don't get loose and strain anything.

Eigentlich wollte die junge Samantha Everett in dieser regnerischen Nacht ja nach London, doch irgendwo im Nirgendwo gibt ihr Motorrad plötzlich den Geist auf. Was nun? Hier gibt es weit und breit keine Menschenseele, es ist dunkel und das Wetter gnadenlos. In der Nähe befindet sich jedoch ein Haus und rein zufällig beobachtet sie, wie eine andere Frau vor dem riesigen Anwesen steht, an der Haustür klingelt und sich an der Sprechanlage als neue Assistentin vorstellt. "Gray Matter to najnowsze dzieło Jane Jensen, powszechnie uznawanej za jednego z gigantów gier przygodowych, głównie za sprawą trylogii z Gabrielem Knightem w roli głównej. Jej najnowszy tytuł to klasyczna przygodówka z interfejsem point & click, w której animowane w pełnym trójwymiarze postacie, poruszają się w pre-renderowanym środowisku 2D. Za oprawę muzyczną odpowiedzialny jest Robert Holmes, kompozytor (a prywatnie mąż Jensen), twórca ścieżki dźwiękowej do Gabriela Knighta.
Gra składa się z kilku etapów prezentowanych w stylu właściwym dla dawnych przygodówek Sierry. Oznacza to, że w każdym rozdziale mamy szereg zadań do wykonania, a kolejność ich rozwiązywania zależy tylko od nas. Jak to zwykle w przygodówkach bywa, bardzo ważne są tu zagadki i wyzwania, przed którymi stają główni bohaterowie. W Gray Matter mamy ich kilka rodzajów, wśród których typowe dla gatunku odkrywanie właściwego zastosowania dla znajdowanych przedmiotów schodzi na plan dalszy. Zamiast tego ważną rolę pełnią łamigłówki tzw. Klubu Dedala, wymagające pewnej wiedzy, bystrości umysłu i umiejętności rozwiązywania rebusów. Drugim typem zagadek są sztuczki iluzjonistyczne, których opisy znajdujemy w specjalnej księdze Sam i które wymagają rekwizytów nabywanych w magicznym sklepiku. In modo simile a quanto sperimentato nei prodotti che l'hanno resa celebre, la Jensen ha scelto per Gray Matter un approccio che partisse proprio dalla cura nello sviluppo della trama, in special modo nella figura dei personaggi che ne movimentano lo svolgimento. Nei panni di Samantha Everett, aspirante prestigiatrice statunitense in trasferta in Gran Bretagna, il giocatore avrà modo di mettersi sulle tracce del Daedalus Club, il circolo di magia più prestigioso al mondo, e per un fortuito caso del destino entrare in contatto con l'enigmatico Dr. Davis Styles, l'altro alter ego controllabile nei capitoli a lui dedicati, ex professore universitario e ricercatore di cui Samantha si fingerà la nuova assistente, rimanendo coinvolta nelle sue ricerche nel campo della neuropsichiatria. L'alterno uso dei due mette in evidenza una buona scrittura e soprattutto il grandissimo lavoro di ricerca sulle fonti, apprezzabile tanto sotto forma di riferimenti al mondo dell'illusionismo, quanto soprattutto a quello della psichiatria di confine, con la maniacale ricerca di Styles per un contatto con la moglie, morta anni prima in un incidente, che viene supportata da rilievi tecnici, documenti e dialoghi evidentemente frutto di uno studio tutt'altro che amatoriale o raffazzonato.
I primi capitoli di Gray Matter scorrono quindi un po' troppo lenti ma affascinanti, al punto da creare un'attesa nei confronti di quanto viene dopo solo in parte soddisfatta. Dopo anni di successo di avventure come quelle scanzonate di Telltale o dal tono avventuroso come nei vari Runaways, di divagazioni orrorifiche alla Black Mirror o incentrate sull'aspetto più strettamente visivo come Machinarium e il recente The Dream Machine, sperimentare sessioni interamente incentrate sull'evocazione sensoriale dei ricordi del tempo passato con la propria donna scomparsa, come quella che vede Styles protagonista all'interno di un parco, stupisce sulle prime, lasciando purtroppo in parte delusi al momento di constatare come tali premesse non portino a un effettivo percorso di crescita.
Anche senza voler mettere in campo il finale in sospeso con tanto di domande irrisolte annesse, la caratterizzazione gotica data ai protagonisti pare alla lunga un po' troppo legata alla volontà di creare un personaggio più sulle corde della sensibilità femminile - nel caso di Samantha - e alle mode narrative degli ultimi anni - il Dr. Styles che elabora il lutto vestendosi di nero e portando una maschera, nella Gran Bretagna del 2000 - con la (quasi) totale assenza di personaggi e momenti più leggeri o grosse accelerazioni di ritmo che andrebbe benissimo nel caso di un libro o di un film, ma a tratti mal si amalgama con la necessaria sospensione dell'incredulità richiesta a chi fruisce di un prodotto interattivo dove ogni riflessione, discorso e suggestione è in balia dell'abilità logica dell'utente e della sua capacità di andare avanti. Soddisfatti a metà anche per l'ambientazione di Oxford, perfetta all'inizio nel regalare la giusta atmosfera e il background alle vicende ma un po' sottosfruttata nella sua veste di città universitaria per eccellenza, e per tutta la fase centrale all'interno del campus dove Samantha interagirà con i componenti del gruppo che si sottoporrà agli (affascinanti) esperimenti di Styles, che non sembrano avere un seguito nei rapporti interpersonali tra i suoi componenti nonostante gli accadimenti non poco destabilizzanti per le loro vite. Se quindi Gray Matter ha in comune con i tre Gabriel Knight la grande cura per le fonti e pone anche una maggiore attenzione a certi aspetti legati alla narrazione, come la precisione nel doppiaggio in inglese, lo spostamento del focus verso una materia più complessa rispetto a riti voodoo, lupi mannari, vampiri e vicende di antiche famiglie europee, non sembra aver del tutto premiato in termini di personaggi e momenti memorabili, risultando nel complesso inferiore.
