A research group at the Technical University of Catalonia has built a constructed wetlands pilot plant in the Laboratory in the Environmental Division. Results obtained will serve to improve the efficiency of future systems. The pilot plant is constructed such that analysis can be carried out to evaluate the efficiency of different operational parameters. In our larger cities, complex and highly technical processes are used to treat our wastewater. These conventional treatment plants are expensive and also require a lot of energy. For smaller populations, conventional treatment plants are often not suitable. This may be a function of cost, energy or even the lack of infrastructure or skilled labour, needed to construct and maintain conventional waste water treatment plants. Constructed wetlands are simple wastewater treatment systems. They consist of shallow tanks filled with a gravel layer and planted with emergent rooted wetland plants such as the common reed. These plants are well-adapted to live in flooded conditions found in wetlands. As the wastewater flows through the gravel and the roots of the reeds, pollutants are progressively removed. The aim of the pilot plant is scientific research, but it also functions as a demonstration project. Thus the pilot plant serves to encourage the use of constructed wetland technology, while also proving to be a successful educational tool. More information: http://www-ambiental.upc.es/es/

This presentation explains mitigation. Mitigation is often the most confusing part of the permitting process for applicants. When the agencies review an application for wetland impact they first look for elimination and reduction of impacts. If there are still wetland impacts after elimination and reduction, mitigation to make up for these impacts will be required. This video answers some of our most frequently asked questions about mitigation.

The Mesopotamian Marshes or Iraqi Marshes are a wetland area located in southern Iraq and partially in southwestern Iran and Kuwait. Historically the marshlands, mainly composed of the separate but adjacent Central, Hawizeh and Hammar Marshes, used to be the largest wetland ecosystem of Western Eurasia. It is a rare aquatic landscape in the desert, providing habitat for the Marsh Arabs and important populations of wildlife. Draining of portions of the marshes began in the 1950s and continued through the 1970s to reclaim land for agriculture and oil exploration. However, in the late 1980s and 1990s, during the presidency of Saddam Hussein, this work was expanded and accelerated to evict Shia Muslims from the marshes. Before 2003, the marshes were drained to 10% of their original size. After the fall of Hussein's regime in 2003, the marshes have partially recovered but drought along with upstream dam construction and operation in Turkey, Syria and Iran have hindered the process. The marshes are home to 40 species of bird and several species of fish plus demarcating a range limit for a number of avifauna species. The marshes were once home to millions of birds and the stopover for millions of other migratory birds, including flamingos, pelicans and herons as they traveled from Siberia to Africa. At risk are 40% to 60% of the world's marbled teal population that live in the marshes, along with 90% of the world's population of Basra Reed-warbler. Also at risk are the Sacred Ibis and African darter. A subspecies of the Hooded crow known as the Mesopotamian crow is found in this part of southern Iraq. Seven species are now extinct from the marshes, including the Indian Crested Porcupine, the bandicoot rat and the marsh gray wolf. The draining of the marshes caused a significant decline in bioproductivity; following the Multi-National Force overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime, water flow to the marshes was restored and the ecosystem has begun to recover. The fate of the two species of otter (the Eurasian otter and the smooth-coated otter) which were historically present in the marshes on either side of the border remains unknown. After the 1991 Gulf War, Shia Muslims in southern Iraq rebelled against Saddam Hussein who in turned crushed the rebellion and further accelerated the draining of the Central and Hammar marshes in order to evict Shias that have taken refuge in the marshes. With the exception of the Nasiriyah Drainage Pump Station, the 565 km (351 mi) Third River was completed in 1992 and two other canals were constructed south and nearly parallel to it. One, the Mother of Battles canal, was constructed to divert the flow of the Euphrates south below the Hammar Marsh. Second, the 240 km Loyalty to Leader Canal also known as the Basrah Sweetwater Canal, which originates in the lower Euphrates region, collected water from the terminus of the Gharraf River and diverted it under the Euphrates, away from the Central Marshes and below the Hammar Marshes towards Basrah. The Glory River was also constructed to divert water from the Tigris's southern-flowing distributaries east and parallel along the Tigris until they reached the Euphrates near its confluence with the Tigris at Qurna. By the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the marshes had lost 90% of their size from the previous decades. The Central and Hammar Marshes were nearly drained and only 35% of the Hawizeh Marshes remained. After the invasion, locals destroyed dikes. The combined efforts of the Iraq government, United Nations, U.S. agencies and record precipitation in Turkey helped begin a restoration of the marshes. As of late 2006, 58% of the original marshes had been reinundated. The Nasiriyah Drainage Pump Station was completed in 2009, affording the Third River to be used for agricultural drainage. However, recent drought and continued upstream dam construction and operation in Turkey, Syria and Iran have reduced the marshes to around 30% of their original size by 2009.

Primarily, the factor that distinguishes wetlands from other land forms or water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to its unique hydric soil. Wetlands play a number of roles in the environment, principally water purification, flood control, and shoreline stability. Wetlands are also considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal life. Wetlands occur naturally on every continent except Antarctica, the largest including the Amazon River basin, the West Siberian Plain, and the Pantanal. The water found in wetlands can be freshwater, brackish, or saltwater. The main wetland types include swamps, marshes, bogs, and fens; and sub-types include mangrove, carr, pocosin, and varzea. They can also be constructed artificially as a water management tool, which may play a role in the developing field of water-sensitive urban design. The UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment determined that environmental degradation is more prominent within wetland systems than any other ecosystem on Earth. International conservation efforts are being used in conjunction with the development of rapid assessment tools to inform people about wetland issues. The Volga-Akhtuba floodplain (VAF) national park is an area containing internationally important Ramsar wetlands. However, because of successive human activities, the hydrological regime of the area has been greatly diminished. Development of agriculture and increasing regulation of water flows upstream of the floodplain have greatly impacted on the natural dynamics of the system. Gradually, over time, the wetland environment has become degraded. The gradual degradation of the wetlands has decrease the sustainability and resilience of the wetland, reducing fish stocks and the health of the ecosystem. Also, whilst flow regulation had improved agricultural outputs in the short term, the long term quality of agricultural land has decreased. Every Drop Matters has been working to restore the natural water flows within the floodplain and helped rehabilitate wetland ecosystems. Working with local communities, the project has educated communities on the sustainable use of the wetlands, reaching out the local residents, fishermen, students and tourists. Local communities now benefit from the improved environment and increased tourism.

Explore a hidden gem of wetland habitat at WWT Martin Mere's Wild Walk. The new Wild Walk experience takes visitors on a journey through three types of wetland habitat, providing a taste of the ‘wild’ reserves, which are traditionally only accessed via viewpoints in hides. Visitors are encouraged to bring wellies to explore and find fun activities: -meander through a maze of wetland tracks -squelch through the muddy meadow to the middle maze lodge -bounce across the wobbly web bridge to the wet woods -balance along a reedy ramble, discovering the wildlife and giant sculptures. The attraction is included as part of your admission price. The Wild Walk project at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is funded by the Lancashire Environmental Fund, a generous legacy from the late Mrs Magdalene Thistleton, Cargill PLC and The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.

Claire of the Friends of Kootenay Lake demonstrateds the difficulties of planting wetlands in the winter. Though planting is hard going, this will give the plants the head start they need to outcompete other species. In 2014, the BC Wildlife held a Wetland Restoration and Mapping workshop in Meadow Creek BC, which generated interest and designs for the restoration of the Halleran property. Drained by the great-grandfather and grandfather of current landowner Terry Halleran, it is now being restored to its natural state. This restoration will provide habitat value to grizzly bear, elk, caribou, western toad, and olive-sided flycatcher, to name a few. This project was made possible with funding from Wildlife Habitat Canada, Columbia Basin Trust, Environment Canada, Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, The Government of Canada, and the National Wetland Conservation Fund.

GQ Magazine 2015-04-10A wetland is a land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, such that it takes on characteristics that distinguish it as a distinct ecosystem. The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands is the characteristic vegetation that is adapted to its unique soil conditions: Wetlands are made up primarily of hydric soil, which supports aquatic plants.
The water found in wetlands can be saltwater, freshwater, or brackish. There are four major kinds of wetlands, swamps, marshes, bogs and fens. Some experts add wet meadows and aquatic systems as added wetland types, although others consider both of these to be simply marsh. In addition, there are many sub-types of wetlands; a few examples include mangrove, carr, pocosin, and varzea.
Wetlands play a number of roles in the environment, principally water purification, flood control, and shoreline stability. Wetlands are also considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal life.
William Sanford "Bill" Nye (born November 27, 1955), popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, is an American science educator, comedian, television host, actor, mechanical engineer, and scientist. He is best known as the host of the Disney/PBS children's science show Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993–1998) and for his many subsequent appearances in popular media as a science educator.
William Sanford Nye was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Jacqueline (née Jenkins; c. 1920–2000), a codebreaker during World War II, and Edwin Darby "Ned" Nye (died 1997), also a World War II veteran whose experience in a Japanese prisoner of war camp led him to become a sundial enthusiast. Nye is a fourth-generation Washington, D.C. resident on his father's side of the family. After attending Lafayette Elementary and Alice Deal Junior High in the city, he was accepted to the private Sidwell Friends School on a partial scholarship, graduating in 1973. He studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University, where one of his professors was Carl Sagan, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1977. Far, where dawn never ends
Away, are echoes the old lady sings
Crying that years
Years I've been trapped in this cave
Inside, a candle consumed by its flame
And all of the repenting words aside
I desire to hurt you
Desert the world you belong to
In the forest where I lay
My hungry heart
My mellow mind
All my thoughts
They're weak in kind
They're dreams
Red is the mountain of mice
Rotten on the hour of demise
The pile, it resembles a crown
And every roaring squel
Is shame in disguise
Coming clear
And all that you wished for
Is becoming right now
Still it stays, in troubling ways
The ire
Far, where dawn never ends
Away, the old lady sings
For years I've been trapped in this cave
This road turns
The thief returns
The holes in his head flooding light
He stole the sun
Where it all began
No one understands a word, no one
Thoughts that burn inside
Rule just one at a time
Hurt and hypnotized
Do not dare defy
The wind is cool on his skin
Caressing like the air was just for you
In freefall
The mind can stall
And the pavement kisses
In the most subtle way
Thoughts that burn inside
Rule just one at a time
Hurt and hypnotized
Lines of silver blood
A sound that is so steady
Falling from the clouds
On my weary hands
The weight, I cannot bear
It draws me to the center
Of the universe
A touch, it opens me
See, there the traitor lies
My mind, it was unready
To sing a horrid tale
Of somewhere I won't return to
The fear of what I can't see
Is all I'll never know
Heard as so surreal
In a soothing sound
Crows with liquid eyes
They are hovering over
The pure part of my mind
Where I rest my head
Hear, the words they mutter out
My mind is still unready
Feel the beaks sting through my flesh
They are making their way in
The fear of what I can't see
Is all I'll never know
Heard as so surreal
Walking in the dark
I have taken the wrong way home, I've been
Lost for days and seen no familiar face
No one wants to see a weak being
And I've been lied to too many times
Been let down and fallen behind
Withhold the name I bear
And give me a chance for my revenge
Read past the words that bleed
Read to the core to keep
Soar and rise to see
Above and beyond me
With one wish withstand
All the scorn all the masses demand
And I've had reason to come to the conclusion
No eyes will open without a raised hand
Read past the words that bleed
Read to the core to keep
Soar and rise to see
Past the gates
Your soul creates
Lies a path
That radiates
In a world of sterile crowds
We are part of the system
Closed from wisdom
Buried words, running deep
Stinging into a question
Suggestion
In my days
I've not heard
A stronger sound
And I believe
In silence lies
The power to hear
Not in fear
Not being austere
Through the halls
A whisper calls
In a world of broken glass
We are hovering over
A four-leaf clover
But no one knows when to end
And for how long until it's over
In my days
I've not heard
A stronger sound
And I believe
In silence lies
The power to hear
Not in fear
Climbing up a broken womb
The grief was on you
A life left dead
Words never said
Still the spirit stays
Frozen, broken, forever taken away
It was never your choice
To reap what was sown
Climbing up a broken womb
A dream is now true
What once was
Is now no more
So still the spirit stays
Frozen, broken, forever taken away
It was never your choice
To speak in past tenses
Leaves life defenseless
They're hiding they're waiting
To beat you senseless
But endure through the pain
The lucid hours maintain
This state of consciousness
Makes you feel nothing
Once you are taken
You won't be put back to your place
Down in the darkest cave...
...The brightest of days
The wait will be over soon
With one push you are over
In an aisle of array
In a world
So serene and undoubtful
Of the way that you are
As the only
Exist without memories
To drift through deep seas
Once the feeling wears off
The sense of floating is gone
Down from the highest sky
The lowest of minds
The wait will be over soon
With one push you are over
In an aisle of array
In a world
So serene and undoubtful
Of the way that you are
Come high tide
Beware the pain
The scars they stay the same
What I've lived
And what I've known
The stones I've thrown
In the eyes of the mourning are veins of death
The bleeding
It won't stop until all tears have shed
What I am
An ending stream
Dark water calm and deep
The life that once flowed in him
The air, we now breathe
In the eyes of the mourning are veins of death
The bleeding
Here lie only the lonely
Weathered pain down on me
And I keep protecting the only
Remaining piece, forgotten foul
Soul of the one and the only
Kept safe, guarded so boldly
Slain, scorn
Away from the watching eye
Here rest the weary the wicked
Once beheld, now given away
For all those restlessly breathing
Once been told, this story lives
And I keep forgetting the only
Thing I once thought was solely
For those eyes in the mirror
Not dead, in endless endeavour
Never before have I been seen like this
Never so torn, never without bliss
I have now seen the weight of my being
My aim was never to fall, to rise again
But I have now seen the weight of my being
My stain
Was never to fall and be pulled up again
To let myself feel the weakness I pretend
It is faith that leads you onward
The unreal that stays alive
It's a fairy they believe in
The queen of blinded eyes
She sings a song so luring
Every note falls deep
It's the voice that keeps them feeding
The emptiness they need
Come and follow me
Deep, deeper down
A few more steps
We're nearly there
Come and follow me
Deep, deeper down
Underneath live
The scolded creatures
In the sewers they shine
Strong, clear crimson red
Reflections of a dawn unending
It is fear that keep you crawling
The unknown that lures you down
But the melody dies and deeper
All you hear is a growling sound
Come and follow me
Come deeper down
Let me see
Your aching eyes
Come closer
We're nearly there
Here in the gutter
Love is another
World that will vanish
The stronger the light is
Underneath live
The scolded creatures
In the sewers they shine
Strong clear crimson red
