http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_(1984_film) Party is a 1984 Hindi film directed by Govind Nihalani. The film boasted an ensemble cast of leading art cinema actors of Parallel Cinema,[1] including Vijaya Mehta, Manohar Singh, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rohini Hattangadi. It based on the play Party (1976) by Mahesh Elkunchwar. The movie was produced by National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC). Party was the official Indian entry to the 32nd International Film Festival of India, New Delhi, and also took part in the Tokyo Film Festival 1985 and Asia Pacific Film Festival 1985.[2] Contents [hide] 1 Overview 2 Plot and technique 3 Awards 4 Cast 5 References 6 External links Overview[edit] Shot in real-time, lasting most of an evening, except for a few initial scenes to set the context — which show the people who attend just before going to the party: getting ready, looking forward to going, or cribbing about having to go — and a harrowing finale. The film is a deeply intelligent satire aimed at the urban elite — especially those poseurs with artistic inclinations, namely establishment-artists and their patrons. It depicts their apathy towards the society at large while they get away, by the way of small talk and prosaic conversations at parties. The power of the movie derives from Elkunchwar's play — which had a very successful run in Marathi theatres in Pune and Bombay, before Govind Nihalani turned it, with the author's active participation, into a screenplay. Nihalani had just made Ardh-Satya — which had been a surprise break-away hit for alternative cinema (or Parallel Cinema as it is called in India) and it was easier for him to get generous financing from the government public sector company NFDC (declared bankrupt and closed soon after the assassination of art movie aficionado Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi). There is some speculation that it was not being offered a role in this movie, and two others, which so disillusioned art house diva Smita Patil that she switched to doing mainstream Bollywood movies. Plot and technique[edit] The entire action is confined to an evening party hosted by Damyanti Rane (Vijaya Mehta), a rich middle-age widow and well-known patron of the arts in the city. All the cognoscenti of the urban milieu make a beeline to the event. The party is hosted in the honour Diwakar Barve (Manohar Singh), a celebrated playwright, who has just been awarded the prestigious National Literary Award. There are gradual revelations in conversations between attendees of the party — by turns catty, outraged, resigned and cynical — that he got the award because he is Damyanti's lover, who wields political clout, or a toady of the establishment. Gradually, all the conversation gears towards the real winner, the hero-in-absentia: Amrit, an immensely talented and promising writer-poet who left the politics of the party circuit and literary societies to go live and work with the tribal community. Amrit, though not present in person, shows himself again and again in their conversations reminding them and viewers of their banality, deceit, and their utter callousness towards the inequities in society at large, which brings them at cross-purposes to the true aim of all art and artistic endeavours: the ennoblement of humanity. In a harrowing finale, which cuts to the heartland of the country, Amrit is shown to be murdered by the police as a "left-wing terrorist" approximately at the same time as the party was going on. Hijras, also known as chhakka in Kannada and Bambaiya Hindi, khusra in Punjabi, kojja in Telugu and ombodhu in Madras Tamil is a term used to refer to individuals in India, South Asia who are transsexual or transgender.Transgender people are also known as Aravani, Aruvani or Jagappa in other areas of India. It is a common misconception among South Asians that hijras are "only men who have feminine gender identity, adopt feminine gender roles and wear women's clothing". In reality, the community is significantly more diverse. In Pakistan, the hijras identify themselves as either female, male, or third gender. The term more commonly advocated by social workers and transgender community members themselves is 'khwaaja sira' and can identify the individual as a transsexual person, transgender person (khusras), cross-dresser (zenanas) or eunuch (narnbans). Hijras have a recorded history in the Indian subcontinent, from antiquity, as suggested by the Kama Sutra period, onwards. This history features a number of well-known roles within subcontinental cultures, part gender-liminal, part spiritual, and part survival. In South Asia, many hijras live in well-defined and organized all-hijra communities, led by a guru. These communities have sustained themselves over generations by "adopting" young boys who are rejected by, or flee their family of origin.[9] Many work as sex workers for survival. Sahir Ludhianvi (8 March 1921 – 25 October 1980) was a popular Urdu poet and Hindi lyricist, who worked extensively in Hindi films. Sahir Ludhianvi is his pseudonym. He won the Filmfare Award twice, in 1964 and 1977, and in 1971 was awarded the Padma Shri. He was honoured with the issuance of a commemorative stamp on 8 March 2013, the 92nd anniversary of his birth. His biography, Sahir Ludhianvi: The People's Poet, has been published by HarperCollins. Sahir Ludhianvi was born in a Muslim gujjar family as Abdul Hayee on 8 March 1921 in Ludhiana, Punjab in India. His mother's name was Sardar Begum. Sahir's parents had a very loose and estranged relationship. In 1934, when he was thirteen years old, his father married for the second time. At that time, his mother decided to take the bold step of leaving her husband, forfeiting all claims to the financial assets. Sahir's father then sued his mother for child custody but lost. He threatened to make sure Sahir did not live with his mother very long, even if that meant taking the child's life. Sahir's mother then found friends who kept a close watch on him and didn't let him out of sight. Fear and financial deprivation surrounded the formative years of this young man. His parents' divorce brought him and his mother face to face with poverty and struggle in life. The house where Sahir was born, a red sandstone haveli, stands in Karimpura, a Muslim neighbourhood of Ludhiana, with a small plaque announcing its importance upon the arched mughal darwaaza – the only effort by the city to remember him. Whenever a child goes missing, general perception is that he is abducted by an organised child trafficking racket. If it is proved that he is not abducted and just missing because of some reason the perception suggests that he may be entrapped in some racket that's why it is difficult to trace him. But Ghaziabad police's unique effort, The Operation Smile, in which it rescued 227 children from different parts of country in just one month time period, throws light to some different and more important aspect of the horrible story of more then 1 lakh missing children per year in India. [Chorus 2]
What is wrong with her eyes?
A glossy stare that won't leave me be
Starts my blood running cold
A gaze that could make hell freeze over
I have to understand she's gone
But she's not, don't you tell me that she is dead
Watch her lips softly move
Because she's still whispering to me
And something here is not quite right
Skin so cold beneath my touch
As I brush back her hair and close her eyes
But I cannot stand to turn away
When I do, she'll be gone
It's frightening
Sweaty hands will fail to lock the door
They'll be here soon
I wish I could keep my teeth from grinding
I wish I'd stop looking behind me
Running now will only make it worse
They'll be here soon
I wish I could shake the awful feeling
I wish my mind would stop
Maybe I am crazy
And my mind is trying to deceive me
As the ground vanishes, I wonder
Will the sky be the next to fail me?
Paint abandons canvas
And my brush can't seem to start again from scratch
As I watch everything unravel
Why should I even try to stop the collapse?
I won't
Shaking as I rest her body down
No one knows, only me
It's frightening
Sweaty hands will fail to lock the door
They'll be here soon
I wish I could keep my teeth from grinding
I wish I'd stop looking behind me
Running now will only make it worse
They'll be here soon
I wish I could shake the awful feeling
I wish my mind would stop
Maybe I am crazy
And my mind is trying to deceive me
As the ground vanishes, I wonder
Will the sky be the next to fail me?
Paint abandons canvas
And my brush can't seem to start again from scratch
As I watch everything unravel
Why should I even try to stop the collapse?
Why should I even try to stop the collapse?
Why should I even try?
There's a madman glaring, straight at me
Oh, I know I've seen his face before
I am sure I've seen his face before
Maybe I am crazy
And my mind is trying to deceive me
As the ground vanishes I wonder
Will the sky be the next to fail me?
Paint abandons canvas
And my brush can't seem to start again from scratch
As I watch everything unravel
Why should I even try to stop the collapse?
In this skeletal form, rupture skin and flesh
Wake these eyes of bone to life
In this skeletal form, rupture skin and flesh
The ashes of the dead arise
Past an enormity of stifling redundancy
We suck breath into this dry carcass
With joints that crack and veins that run gravel
To set in motion, exultant
Skeleton, churning rivers of smoke
Skies laughing with blood
Islands separated by a fraction of surface
Conductors through holy submission and humble duty
Shed an iron shroud and inventing fire
Vibrant ghoul, birthing thunder and lunacy
Serve
Reaver, fool, carve justice from within
Priestess, exacting judgment of a silver globe
Apparition dissolve
Dissolve and depart
In this skeletal form, reverberate and shudder
In this larval state, germinate and stutter
In this skeletal form, carry until it is over

Artist, finding your brush then you paint my days
Holding my thoughts as they fade away
Knowing inside we are one, one
Poet, jotting the words that will light my ways
Slicing the bread that will be my pay
Knowing inside we are free, free
And all the endless pasts wouldn't spill the time
Our friendship lasts
Wouldn't you be mine
We'll make it through our ways
Believer, holding my hand as I walk alone
Believing where I stand and then I'm shown
Deep down inside we are one,
As we love our home
Keeper, knowing the words to the songs I sing
Smiling at me and my foolish things
Knowing inside we are one, one
Artist, finding your brush then you paint my ways
Holding my thoughts as they fade away
Knowing inside we are one, one
Lover, sharing the fruits from the tree of life
Knowing you'll care for me all my life
Knowing inside we are one, one
And all the endless pasts wouldn't spill the time
Our friendship lasts
Wouldn't you be mine
