Happy 30th NES, we got you a museum exhibit

The Strong National Museum of Play and the Center for Games Studies and Art Research at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan, are collaborating to study and preserve video games, and their first exhibit will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System. According to a press release from The Strong, the NES exhibit, Playing with Power: 30 Years of the Nintendo Entertainment System, will "explore the history of the console's development and introduction, showcase artifacts from The Strong's world-renowned collections, feature never-before-seen interviews with the NES hardware developer Masayuki Uemura, and include playable games, such as Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt." Don't Starve: Giant Edition is heading to Wii U next week

Don't Starve: Giant Edition will be available for the Wii U via the Nintendo eShop May 28, Klei Entertainment announced today. Don't Starve is an action-adventure game first released in 2013 in which players try to survive for as long as possible in the wilderness. The Giant Edition includes the original game as well as the Reign of Giants expansion, which added new biomes, creatures, challenges, seasons and more. Those that purchase the eShop game before June 28 will also get a bonus gift copy. For more on Don't Starve, check out our review. The Wii U version arrives in Europe June 4.

Splatoon began as tofu blocks and rabbits, 14 years after Nintendo's last new characters

In its earliest stage, Nintendo's upcoming shooter Splatoon was a prototype with combatants shaped like tofu blocks, according to the transcript of an interview between the game's creators and Nintendo's president and CEO, Satoru Iwata. "There was a white thing and a black thing shaped like blocks of tofu, and they were shooting ink and they had to steal each other's turf," Hisashi Nogami of Nintendo''s Entertainment Analysis & Development Division told Iwata. Nintendo EAD is responsible for developing new products. Headed by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, it has a long legacy of creating well-received games. Xbox One outsells PS4 in April as Mortal Kombat X tops game sales

Xbox One outsold PlayStation 4 in the U.S. during April, according to NPD's monthly industry report on game and console sales. The top-selling packaged game was Mortal Kombat X. As is tradition, the two leading console makers released statements about their respective performances. NPD does not release actual sales numbers to the public, selling those to interested parties. "As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month," said Xbox marketer Mike Nichols. "Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent." Nintendo World Championships return at E3 (update)

Nintendo detailed its latest plans for E3 in a video released on YouTube today, which includes the return of the Nintendo World Championships. "For the first time in 25 years, some of Nintendo's biggest fans will get to go head-to-head in a gaming showdown for the ages," according to Nintendo's E3 site. "Join a worldwide audience by watching the live stream on Sunday, June 14." Just Dance will be Ubisoft's only previous-gen game moving forward

Just Dance is Ubisoft's only game to span console generations from now on, CEO Yves Guillemot said during an earnings call today. "On Just Dance, we will continue to bring old-gen console versions," Guillemot said. "But on the other products like Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, The Division and an unannounced franchise, we will not have old-gen versions." Just Dance 2015, the last game in the franchise, was released Oct. 21 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii and Wii U. During today's call, the company also revealed delays for Tom Clancy's The Division. Earlier today, during the reveal of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft owned up to the problems with Assassin's Creed Unity, which you can see in the video below.

Nintendo to unveil E3 plans tomorrow, May 13

Nintendo will reveal how it's handling E3 2015 tomorrow, May 13, at noon ET, Nintendo of America announced today on Twitter. Along with the announcement, the company posted a photo of a tall figure — presumably Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America — wearing a pink hooded tracksuit at the gym, and asked, "Who's training for E3?" You can see the tweet below. For the past two years, Nintendo has eschewed hosting a traditional press briefing at E3 in favor of more focused events. Banjo-Kazooie successor gets a literal trouser snake as a new character

The minds behind Kickstarter success story Yooka-Laylee have shown they're not scared of wordplay with the Banjo-Kazooie-inspired title of the game. It looks like that playfulness will extend beyond the main characters and into the realm of innuendo as well. In a Kickstarter update today, developer Playtonic Games unveiled the first support character from Yooka-Laylee: a snake named Trowzer. See, he's named that because despite being a snake and having no legs, he wears pants. He also carries a large, old-school '80s-style cell phone.
