Octodad: Dadliest Catch hits Vita on May 26, lets you get tangled up with a buddy

Octodad: Dadliest Catch, everyone's favorite game starring a fatherly cephalopod, will be released on PlayStation Vita on May 26, developer Young Horses announced today. It's a cross-buy game, so if you already own Octodad on PlayStation 4, you'll be able to download it on Vita at no additional cost. Cross-save isn't supported, but Young Horses threw in some new trophies for the Vita version. Octodad on Vita is compatible with the PlayStation TV. Another addition, developed with the help of Sickhead Games, is local co-op play — on a single Vita. Two players can get up close and personal with Octodad, and each other, as they take control of either side of the handheld device. "We're excited to share this cool new way of playing Octodad and hope you enjoy it as much as we do," said...

Not a Hero review: don't stop and pop

Not a Hero doesn't just trim the fat off the cover-based shooter genre — it absolutely eviscerates it. Just as developer Roll7's previous work, OlliOlli, reduced skateboarding to its most essential components, Not a Hero takes the cover-based shooter and turns it into something lean and brutal. The game's murderous cast is always moving, sliding between cover, fanning out pot shots and delivering grisly executions. There's no downhill slope to pull you forward, but that doesn't mean Not a Hero lacks momentum. For all the slick improvisation that Not a Hero demands, it undercuts that chaos with a surprising amount of rigidity. It is a game in which you will fail dozens of times until you learn the correct way to complete your objectives. It feels less like composing a symphony of...

Atlus can do better than this creepy, porn-lite dungeon crawler

Atlus, as a North American publisher, is a treasure. We wouldn't be able to play dozens of great Japanese games in English without its localization crew. This ranges from the internally developed Shin Megami Tensei/Persona games to side projects from other developers that it chooses to bring over such as the soon-to-be-released Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains. Atlus is a great company. But for as many refreshing, charming and obscure Japanese titles as Atlus brings to our shores, every once in a while it tosses out something a bit more disturbing. For example, there was last year's Conception 2: Children of the Seven Stars, a role-playing game where the main character creates allies to fight for him by "classmating" with various, lightly-clothed female co-stars. Or there's 2013's D...

How to manufacture stealth in Volume

A new video for Volume, the upcoming stealth game from Thomas Was Alone developer Mike Bithell, shows how players can build their own stealthy labyrinths. Press play above to watch Bithell demonstrate the level editor, which he said the development team used to create Volume's levels. "We've tried to make the process and tools simple," Bithell wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "Easily create a level. Upload it to our server. And bask in the glory and praise of peers with a highly rated map! "Top-rated maps will bubble up in our online community list. It will be easy to select a specific level and hop right in. Or you can create a customizable playlist made from a mix of player-created and campaign levels." Bithell's modern-day Robin Hood retelling is in development for Mac, Windows PC,...

Press Start: Death and resurrection for comics, games and Schwarzenegger

When we looked back at the big stories from last week, we found a weird sense of coherency — and it all involves death and resurrection. The side that supports life includes SimCity creator Will Wright and his quest to build his next game … which isn't really a game. The cult favorite director Swery is also giving his latest game new life, as D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die heads to PC. Plus, the Assassin's Creed franchise will be reborn in London. But life implies death, and there was plenty of that, too. Marvel started killing dozens of comic books in Secret Wars. MachineGames released Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, which is a game about killing nazi zombies. And speaking of the undead, we published a review of Maggie, some surprisingly subversive Schwarzenegger cinema. It's not like we...

Rare Mega Man game The Misadventures of Tron Bonne comes to PSN for just $5.99

Capcom's The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, a rare PlayStation game released in 1999, is now available as a PS One Classic from Sony's PlayStation Store. It's available for download at just $5.99, a lot less than you might pay on eBay. The Misadventures of Tron Bonne regularly goes for $200 or more on eBay, depending on completeness and quality of the PS One game. The option to get it on the cheap is a great opportunity for Mega Man fans who have never played or been able to afford a copy. A prequel to Mega Man Legends, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne gives players control of the titular anti-heroine and her army of Servbots, as Tron attempts to pay back a one million zenny loan — by hook or by crook. The PS One Classic is compatible with PlayStation 3, PSP, Vita and PlayStation TV.

Loud on Planet X smashes up Plants vs. Zombies with Guitar Hero

The decline of music sales and the corresponding rise of streaming-music services mean that it's harder than ever to make money as a musician. These days, artists are exploring every possible avenue to maximize their exposure — and trying to steer clear of being labeled as a sellout while doing so. Pop Sandbox, an indie studio based in Toronto, is working on a project that looks to bring bands to new audiences, a rhythm game called Loud on Planet X that does something different from this year's upcoming revivals of Rock Band and Guitar Hero. "People are looking for new models and new ways to reach audiences, and to engage with fans in more personal ways and in more innovative ways," said Alex Jansen, studio head at Pop Sandbox and creative producer on Loud on Planet X, in an interview...

Valve's Portal series is getting an official pinball table — and we've played it

Watch in 60fps on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube By now, Zen Studios is well-known for their digital pinball tables, many of which are based on popular cross-media franchises like Star Wars and Marvel. Previously, they've even dipped their toes into other series within gaming itself, building tables based on Street Fighter 2, Plants vs. Zombies and The Walking Dead: The Game. Now, Zen is setting its sights on one of gaming's most revered modern properties: Valve Software's Portal. We recently got to go hands-on with the Portal table, which is heavily influenced both the original game and Portal 2. In the video above, we go over what the Portal board gets right, how it was made, and how it compares to Zen's past gaming-based tables. The Portal table comes to Zen Pinball 2 a...

MLB 15 The Show recreates historic Baltimore Orioles game played in empty ballpark

MLB 15 The Show, like a number of modern simulation sports games, contains a mode that allows you to play along with the real-life Major League Baseball season. Known as The Show Live, the mode loads up the actual lineups and starting pitchers for all 162 games for each of the 30 MLB teams. MLB 15 developer Sony San Diego went one step further in recreating yesterday's surreal, historic-for-all-the-wrong-reasons matchup between the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore residents have been engaging in peaceful protests since the death of Freddie Gray last week. Gray, a 25-year-old black man, suffered a spinal cord injury on April 12 while being arrested by the Baltimore Police Department, allegedly for possession of a switchblade. Gray fell into a coma and died a week...
