Why Destiny's Trials of Osiris is the game's most exciting mode yet

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Destiny's new House of Wolves expansion has a ton of new cooperative content in the form of story missions and the Prison of Elders arena, but its highlight might be the new weekly Trials of Osiris PvP event. It throws two teams of three against each other in a fast-paced, strategic survival match, offering huge rewards to the victor — but losing three games ends your run, and cuts off higher tiers of rewards. It's genuinely exciting, even if you're not that great at PvP, which is good, because we definitely aren't. Check out the Overview video posted above to see me and Samit, the King of the Battlefield, take on the Trials of Osiris, and try not to focus too much on the parts where we embarrass ourselves. For more on Destiny's House...

There's a new secret area in Destiny that only the best players will ever visit

Spoilers for Destiny's Trials of Osiris mode ahead!Earlier today, Destiny's new player vs. player mode, the Trials of Osiris, opened its gates to owners of the new House of Wolves DLC. The new mode grants rewards based on how many wins players can rack up before suffering three losses — at which point their ticket to the event can be exchanged for different reward tiers. But what happens if you rack up nine wins (the current maximum) without a single loss? You achieve the highest street cred Destiny has to offer: Access to The Lighthouse, a new social hub that is only open to players who achieve a flawless 9-0 victory. In the video below, you can see YouTube user (and remarkably talented Destiny player, we assume) MrJonathannovak1 reach the area with a perfect card, and reap some sweet...

Here's a sneak preview of the Batman: Arkham Knight prequel comic

DC Comics' official prequel comic for Batman: Arkham Knight keeps plugging right along, telling the tale of the Joker's missing body, his last will and testament, the origins of the new Batmobile and Bruce Wayne's ongoing mission to use his fame and money (as well as his abilities as Batman) to make real change in Gotham City. But despite what seems like a successful start to Commissioner James Gordon's campaign for the office of mayor, it's a safe bet that it's Batman who'll be needed to deal with Bane, newly escaped — again — from Arkham Asylum. Courtesy of DC Comics, we've got this four page preview (plus cover) for Batman: Arkham Knight #14, from the talents of writer Mike W. Barr and artist Jim Aparo. Here's the official summary: One of Batman's deadliest enemies is back and...

Here's what's worth buying from Destiny's Xur, May 22-24

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube If you're playing Destiny, you're probably familiar with Xur, the weekly exotic-item merchant who arrives in the tower on Friday at 5 a.m. ET and departs on Sunday at 5 a.m. ET. If you're a casual player, it can be hard to know where your hard-earned Strange Coins are best spent. Watch the above video for a quick review of Xur's inventory this week, which includes The Last Word, which is the only weapon currently in the game with a custom firing animation. Xur is in the the left side of the new Reef social location that was released with House of Wolves. House of Wolves did not add any new guaranteed strange coin sources, so the Weekly Heroic strike at the highest difficulty is still the fastest way to net nine coins. Xur's...

Arkham Knight's new trailer shows there's a bit of Batman in all of us

Batman: Arkham Knight has seen its fair share of trailers and promotional videos, but this live-action look at the game is a bit different. The idea focuses on the bravery and competence that Batman can, hopefully, inspire in the people around him. If you're doing something great, if you're helping someone, you're being like Batman. Batman has, in fact, been in your heart the whole time. It's an effective trailer, catching the feeling of the game rather than the actual gameplay, and uses the music of Nine Inch Nails well. We know what the game looks like; we're well past the point where that's a surprise, and this gives Warner Bros. another way to sell the game's ideas to the player.

Need for Speed gets a reboot with eponymous game this fall

The Need for Speed franchise is getting a reboot, Electronic Arts announced today, with the launch of Need for Speed this fall. Need for Speed is set for release on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One and, according to the press release, will deliver "deep customization, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game." This will be the 22nd Need for Speed game released since the original in 1994. The franchise stopped numbering the games after the third installment and instead used standalone titles like "Nitro," "Shift" and "Most Wanted." This year's Need for Speed is in development at Ghost Games, the studio behind 2013's Need for Speed Rivals. "Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're...

You look stupid while playing Sony's London Heist, but you won't care

The London Heist demo is one of the best pieces of content Sony shows with the PlayStation 4-driven Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, and the software makes excellent use of the PlayStation Camera and Move controllers to allow you to aim naturally while taking cover. The walking issue is taken away by having the player hiding behind, and shooting back from, a wooden desk. You have full control over your body and arms, and you're given the feeling of being inside an action film. It's a great demo, and it's worth waiting in line if you're ever at an event and are given the chance to try it. The problem is that we've not seen much video of the content itself, nor have we seen what it looks like when someone is playing, from both inside and outside the experience. This video from...

Witcher 3 team on downgrade accusations: 'Maybe we shouldn't have shown that trailer'

Despite garnering almost universal praise, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been catching some heat about the PC version and whether it was downgraded since its initial 2013 trailer. The game was graphically downgraded on PC, members of the company tell Eurogamer. But that original video wasn't all smoke and mirrors, it was captured PC footage, it just showed a game that it turned out the developers couldn't deliver. "Maybe it was our bad decision to change the rendering system," company co-founder Marcin Iwinski told Eurogamer, "because the rendering system after VGX was changed." It turns out that the one used to create the video for the VGX show couldn't deliver the same look across the entire world both in the day and at night. "Maybe we shouldn't have shown that [trailer], I don't...

Here's how loot and Treasure Keys work in Destiny's new Prison of Elders

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Destiny's House of Wolves expansion adds a challenging, exciting new arena mode called Prison of Elders — but that mode's loot distribution system is kind of confusing. If you don't have Treasure Keys, you can't crack open the big chest at the end, locking you out of new legendary gear and a chance for a new Exotic. Considering those Treasure Keys aren't guaranteed to drop in the Prison of Elders, that lockout is a really likely scenario. Fortunately, there are a few ways to farm for Treasure Keys and plenty of gear to grab in the Prison of Elders without them. Check out the video above to see how the Prison of Elders loot system works, or the Overview posted below for more of our thoughts on Destiny's new expansion.

How Destiny's House of Wolves expansion gets right what the last DLC got wrong

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Destiny's first expansion, The Dark Below, wasn't very good. Other than the few exciting moments that came in the raid it added, it wasn't especially content-rich, and actually introduced mechanics that punished its longtime players. Fortunately, House of Wolves, the game's second expansion, gets a lot of stuff right that The Dark Below got wrong. There are some great set pieces and battles, an engaging arena mode and a new upgrade system that lets players choose how they want to progress, rather than chaining them to a harrowing slog. Check out the Overview above to see me and Justin show off some of our highlights for what we've played so far. Also, prepare to receive the V-Blaster, which is now inarguably the best gun in Destiny,...

One of the world's most successful game developers is missing something: a really big hit.

The curiously ordinary desire of Tim Schafer

Sonoma Valley High School senior Tim is strolling the corridors between classes. It's 1984. He's wearing a Toshiro Mifune T-shirt and jeans. Tim bumps into Lisa, a pal of his girlfriend. Tim normally hangs with the nerds who lurk in the computer club. Lisa is a smart, popular student who is mostly seen with the cool kids. They're not close, but they have an affinity, a particular cultural kink that draws them together. They talk about this one thing, because there's no one else at the school who shares their mutual passion. That one thing? The Ramones. While the other kids are listening to Prince, Van Halen and Culture Club, Lisa and Tim are comparing notes on End of the Century, the Ramones' fourth album, released in 1980. Following the Ramones' hugely influential 1970s work,...

Bloodborne's community manufactures insanity, like this crazy boss fight

The best part about developer From Software's Bloodborne, and the Souls series, might be the experimental communities that form around them, as this video from YouTube user legendsofevil shows. Spoiler alert: This article assumes you've played Bloodborne's first few hours. If you haven't and don't want to know the names of a few bosses and characters, turn back now. Games like the PlayStation 4-exclusive Bloodborne are designed to be obscure, and that's part of what makes them so interesting. None but the developers know all the secrets, and the months after a game's release are filled with a community of players experimenting and sharing the secrets that they learn. The video above shows the kind of insanity that can result when you poke Bloodborne's box. Here's what happened, as...
