This Mario Kart: Fury Road remix is bananas

The Mad Max: Fury Road parodies are starting to come in fast and furious, but they're going to have a hard time outclassing this Mad Max/Mario Kart mash-up, which squeezes in just the right amount of smart, sometimes subtle Mario references. From War Boys with Bob-ombs to sand-hungry Bullet Bills, it's a little scary how well Mario Kart reimagined as a post-nuclear wasteland race to the death works out. For viewers who haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road yet, don't worry; this is just a remix of one of the already-released trailers and won't spoil much beyond a few explosive set pieces.

Splatoon began as tofu blocks and rabbits, 14 years after Nintendo's last new characters

In its earliest stage, Nintendo's upcoming shooter Splatoon was a prototype with combatants shaped like tofu blocks, according to the transcript of an interview between the game's creators and Nintendo's president and CEO, Satoru Iwata. "There was a white thing and a black thing shaped like blocks of tofu, and they were shooting ink and they had to steal each other's turf," Hisashi Nogami of Nintendo''s Entertainment Analysis & Development Division told Iwata. Nintendo EAD is responsible for developing new products. Headed by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, it has a long legacy of creating well-received games. But the last original character EAD created was Pikmin, 14 years before it started working on Splatoon. Though the upcoming game will nave new characters, it wasn't...

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker review: total package

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker is one of the most inspired and successful blending of multiple genres that I've ever seen come out of Japan. As a developer, Atlus' strength is largely in fairly traditional turn-based role-playing games, and Record Breaker definitely takes advantage of that. But that's only the bottom-most layer of gameplay. The turn-based battles are wrapped in a cloak of strategy gameplay, which is then clothed in a heavy narrative coat of choice-based visual novel stylings. What's especially impressive about Devil Survivor 2 is not just how it draws on these various, disparate styles of gameplay. Rather, I was thrilled by the way it ties them so tightly together and finds ways for each to interact with each other in a way that feels natural. ...

Nintendo makes the perfect hire

Look, when you're Nintendo, and you get a chance to hire this guy, you do it, if only for the chance to write this kind of a press release: Yes, that's real. You have to figure once he applied this was Doug's job to lose, right? Unless he was up against Toad Bob-omb or something. The best part is Bowser actually worked for seven years for Electronic Arts before joining Nintendo. Bowser "is an outstanding addition to our Nintendo team, as he brings a deep blend of both consumer package goods and video game sales experience," said Scott Moffitt, the executive vice president for sales and marketing for Nintendo of America. "I know he will work tirelessly with our internal and external partners to ensure the broad Nintendo product lineup of hardware, software and...

A children's treasury of all the fairies in The Legend of Zelda

Previously, MasterOfHyrule has catalogued all the ways one can die in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as well as The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. He's also obsessed over all the grabbing/grabbed animations in Super Smash Bros., all the crawling and tripping animations in the same game, compared the final smashes of the latest game with Brawl, and fetishized the battle poses and cries of all 251 Pokémon. So what's left for an encore? Well, how about a visual compendium of every fairie (faerie?) in The Legend of Zelda series? Here they are, in all their health-restoring, life-giving, resurrecting glory. Master of Hyrule's Fairypaedia spans some 27 games, comics, cartoons and other sources. See it above.

Nintendo bringing back some older amiibo in the next few days

Still missing out on some of Nintendo's sold-out amiibo? Nintendo is restocking some of those characters, specifically Fire Emblem's Marth and Ike and Kirby's Meta Knight, in the coming days, the company said on Facebook. Nintendo said those older amiibo will hit store shelves "in limited quantities over the next few days" in a post on Facebook, though it didn't specify which retailers will have them. Meta Knight was originally released as a Best Buy exclusive. Nintendo said earlier this year that it would reissue certain amiibo, like Marth, to make the figures available to customers who wanted to use those characters in new games like Code Name: STEAM. Nintendo also apologized to its customers about availability of some amiibo. "We're trying to meet the demands of our fans and...

Xbox One outsells PS4 in April as Mortal Kombat X tops game sales

Xbox One outsold PlayStation 4 in the U.S. during April, according to NPD's monthly industry report on game and console sales. The top-selling packaged game was Mortal Kombat X. As is tradition, the two leading console makers released statements about their respective performances. NPD does not release actual sales numbers to the public, selling those to interested parties. "As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month," said Xbox marketer Mike Nichols. "Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent." Sony released a statement thanking fans for their support,...

Stretchmo is Nintendo's newest free-to-play experiment for 3DS

Nintendo released a new game in the Pushmo series today, Stretchmo for Nintendo 3DS. The follow-up to Pushmo, Crashmo and Pushmo World, Stretchmo is being sold in the 3DS eShop with a different pricing model. It's free to try, and players can purchase additional puzzles for a fee. Developed by Intelligent Systems, Stretchmo adds a new spin to the Pushmo puzzle series by adding a new mechanic; as Mallo, players push and pull blocks, and can now stretch certain blocks to extend each side, as they try to reach the goal flag. The first few levels of Stretchmo are free to play, and these early levels serve as a brief tutorial for the rest of the game. The other puzzles are sold piecemeal or in bundles. After completing the tutorial levels, players have the option to purchase the following...
